Cabinet to mull royal panel for Teoh's death

IPOH, July 18 — The Cabinet's next meeting will discuss the growing call for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into political secretary's Teoh Beng Hock's death that has sparked an outcry over enforcement agencies' interrogation techniques and perceived persecution of opposition parties.

"The cabinet will study the views and proposals of various people to decide whether such a commission was needed," Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said here. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is expected home soon after attending the recent Non-Aligned Movement meeting in Egypt.

As his regular practise, DAP strongman Lim Kit Siang yesterday called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate Teoh's death and it quickly found support from opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and politicians from across the divide.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin had also independently called for a royal panel after Teoh was found dead on July 16 at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, a day after he was questioned as a witness by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The MACC has its Selangor headquarters on the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam.

Pakatan Rakyat leaders who met MACC officials yesterday claimed they did not get any answers into the 30-year-old's death. Teoh was supposed to have registered his marriage with his fiancee who is two months pregnant with their child.

Police have classified the case as sudden death but have not ruled out foul play.

An autopsy report said Teoh died of multiple injuries caused by a fall from a great height. No arrests have been made but police said they have questioned 23 people, including 17 MACC officials.
