KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 — Umno-controlled newspapers, Berita Harian and Mingguan Malaysia, today slammed critics for demonising the country’s graft-busters over Teoh Beng Hock’s death, with one suggesting there is an agenda to weaken Malay-controlled institutions.
Both newspapers accused the opposition of politicising the political secretary’s death on July 16, with Mingguan saying the federal opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) was using the incident to divert attention away from internal problems and weaknesses.
But Berita Harian suggested the agenda was to weaken Malay-controlled institutions in the article, “Kematian Teoh timbulkan pelbagai spekulasi politik”, written by the New Straits Times group managing editor Zainul Ariffin Isa.
He wrote that political opportunism can turn grief into political capital, and death can be made a catalyst to stoke anger and racial sentiments.
“It is not just the Chinese or supporters of the Pakatan Rakyat who know anger and seek justice.
“Suspicions have been raised especially among the non-Malays that MACC, which like other departments have many Malay officers, selectively chose non-Malays to be investigated,” he wrote.
The new boss of the Umno-owned New Straits Times group did not, however, address complaints raised by two DAP men who were also, like Teoh, brought in for questioning.
The two DAP men, one a Chinese and the other a mixed Malay-Chinese, claimed racial insults were hurled at them by the MACC officers.
Like Teoh, both men were not suspects, but “witnesses,” according to MACC officers.
So far, leaders of the PR alliance, led by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, have not referred to race in their statements demanding the MACC be held responsible for Teoh’s death.
Zainul appeared to suggest that Teoh’s death was an accident and that the MACC officer involved was Malay when he wrote in Berita Harian that “when a victim of an accident was non-Malay, who was previously investigated by a Malay, the speculation is great.”
By suggesting anti-Malay sentiment in Teoh’s death, he also appeared to suggest that government departments were Malay-based institutions rather than a non-partisan civil service.
“Why did the Selangor MB, a Malay, question those of his own race to act fairly?” Zainul wrote.
Mingguan Malaysia, which is also owned by Umno, also attacked the PR alliance for politicising the death.
The newspaper said the controversy could not be resolved through demonstrations or wild accusations.
Mingguan suggested instead that the opposition was using Teoh’s death to distract attention from its own problems.

The newspapers should be responsible not to spin the reports into a racial issue. A lot of the readership is Malays and obviously the intention of the newspapers are to create a defensive attitude among Malays as if they are being attacked and the institutions that they controlled are biased and not to be trusted. The call for inquiry not only come from non Malays but from all sectors of the society including non political organisations.

A young man has just been murdered, a child will grow up not knowing his father and all this bastards can think about is RACE, RACE and more RACE. Everything they touch turns into a racial issue. What other insult can be hurled at this group of shameless people except that their mothers and fathers and grandfathers and grandmothers should be ashamed of themselves for not teaching their sons and daughters proper manners and proper morals. Or in layman's terms, "lu punya bapak tadak ajar lu ka"?

The rakyat of all races whose businesses in Malaysia will attempt to boycott advertising in your newsprint media or electronic media. The public will observe how UMNO backed news twisters can survived with less revenue and how you can keep your unprofessional job. A journalist is required by oath to write the truth and not inciting racial or political disharmony in the country.
If media owners cannot help with positive statements or news, leave your job because you would be negatively influenced by your surroundings and environment. You woud be a lost soul of not able to differentiate between morality and politics.
How would your chidlren lead a life or morality when you cannot lead them by example as good parents who have ethics and principles in life.

It is not about race or religion, it is about right and wrong. a dead of an innocent, needs to be investigated more so when there is so many question marks. if an UMNO person died in same situation, what will UMNO do? even UMNO was complaining at MACC for the abuse at their members who were investigated for money politics. wasn't there some speeches against MACC during the UMNO GA.

Quote: "Why did the Seloangor MB, a Malay, question those of his own race to act fairly?" Zainul wrote.
The answer is simple: the Selangor MB does not eat and drink 'race' in his life. He looks at the seriousness of the problem but not what 'race' involved. He is open-minded and treats other races the same. He knows all races are human beings created by God and have the same human rights.
We believe and trust that the opposition is not so desperate as to have to use a person's death to distract attention from its own problems. They are not so heartless as some people are.
In fact it is more shocking and shameful to learn that there are people who can even make up such baseless accusation.

MACC; PDRM and the judiciary are Malaysian Institutions. To brand such institutions as Malay-controlled institutions is try to turn Malays against Non-Malays.
When PDRM arrested the five lawyers, the Rakyat from all walks of life and races protested loudly. It is not about race. It is about decency and the respect for the rule of law. No human life should be lost in such tragic and suspicious circumstances – to be taken in as a witness and the next thing is to be found dead.
Anything less than a Royal Commission is not acceptable. Don’t let the Rakyat wrongly associate MACC with “Murderers and Corrupt Cops”. A transparent Royal Commission to remove any doubts as to how Teoh died and how to prevent it from happening to another human being.

" ... when a victim of an accident was non-Malay, who was previously investigated by a Malay, the speculation is great "
*Sigh* ... time and time again, when UMNO-controlled papers come out with counter articles, the main talking point is non other than ... RACIAL!
BUT ... Utusan and Mingguan got it right this time, partially. It IS a RACIAL issue.
Just that instead of them admitting UMNO is to blame, they are blaming opposition instead. And in between the lines, so blatantly scare the nation into believing that Malay dominance is being threatened again.
When all right-minded citizens can see so clearly MACC, as stated by them to be Malay-dominated, is hauling up opposition members one-by-one. And 9 out of 10 is "Cina bodoh". And yet UMNO blame us opposition and non-Malays stirring Teoh's death into a racial issue?
Enough is enough, UMNO! There's only so far you can exploit non-Malay MALAYSIANS to fulfill your own sinister agendas. With the death of Teoh Beng Hock, the buck stops there. The line is drawn.
You will answer to me in 2013.

I think he should be sent back to school to be taught what is journalism. What the RAKYAT want is an answer and justice for the sudden and cruel death of a bright young malaysia. From the various actions taken by MACC, one has to question their integrity, rationale, procedures and efficiency. How on earth can the RAKYAT, or even the MALAYs wouldn't question about the competency level of MACC when they are not even all out on umno-bn cronies? Name a few, the Mickey-Mouse lover Dr. toyo, person incharge of the PKFZ drama?
Unless you are telling me MACC did invite them to drink kopi and none of the state run newspaper (read: doggy agency of the government) report on those issues? THen my question to you, are you practicing selective reporting? This kind of reporting in against the spirit of journalism!
To say MALAY shoulnd't criticise MALAY is a pure indication how racist the editor is. You are tyring to say that no matter what happen, the MALAY should only critise NON-MALAY. Like i mention before, the whole point is that the RAKYAT knew how inpartial and incompetent the MACC is, that is the reason why a fairplay must be practice! Anyone who has a good memory will understand how the police has also played out the A. Kugan death while under police custody.
I would sugges to make a report against this editor as he is making some racist comment and as such, a need to ISA-ed him for causing racial dishormany and straining the relationship among the RAKYAT.
I have already long boycotted NST. And I would continue to do so and i would urge the public to do so as well. We should not condone injustice being practice in MALAYSIA, we also should not condone irresponsible reporting (although nothing new given the fact that the NST and the other 2 wrapping newspapers are nothing but a political tabloid in Malaysia).
A point to note, it was the MACC responsibility to ensure the safety of all, be it a suspect or witness while being held under custody or cooperating in investigation. Having an incident like this, it is clear that there is an operation flaw in thier procedures and negligence in their part. And i'm throwing this question to the editor in NST, does that mean there would be no implication and there shouldn't be any questions raised as long as a Malay-controlled institution?

It is absolutely abominable for the Umno-controlled newspapers, Berita Harian and Mingguan Malaysia to sensationalize and politicize the issue. All reasonable and fair minded persons will have questions regarding the unusual and peculiar circumstances of Teoh's death.
Race is not the issue and should not be. Berita Harian and Mingguan Malaysia must re-look their attitude and the way they are managing a purely questionable death and not politicize the issue.
The parents of Teoh and his fiancée have only one wish and that is to know how Teoh died. They do not care if the people responsible for his death are from any particular race. To them, if their son was indeed murdered, does it matter any less whatever race the perpetrators may be?

---
Malay-controlled institutions -
Zainul Ariffin Isa refers to MACC as one the many Malay-controlled institutions.
So it is confirmed lah -
MACC is a Malay-controlled institutions.
MACC is supposed to be non-partisans.
MACC is supposed to be fair to everyone, to every race.
But Zainul appears to suggest that MACC is not to be fair to all races...
It appears that MACC's agenda is to nice to Malays.
Now you understand why Khir Toyo and his 24M mansion - bigger than Mahathir, and he was only MB of Selangor - Dr M was former PM - and all his disneyland tours and holidays and whatnots - MACC will not investigate him. Why??? Zainul seems to suggest that the reason is because Malays have privileges lah.
All those under investigations are Chinese assemblymen from Pakatan Rakyat -
even the idiots also know something is wrong and that the investigations have ulterior motive -
as Zainul has said - MACC is a Malay institution - MACC will attack the non-Malays.
But why Chinese lawmakers from PR and not MCA or Gerakan???
Ahhh, another truth of the matter - MACC is a Malay institution, and it is also Umno- institution.
If you are part of Barisan Nasional, even though you are Chinese, you can have some privileges - not all - but at least you have some lah.
UMNO papers slam MACC critics in Teoh's death -
that his death was politicised by Oppositions.
Aiyahh, Teoh Beng Hock is a member of DAP.
DAP is part of PR - it is a political party.
Ean Yong - Teoh's boss - under investigation for misappropriation of funds -
Teoh was taken into MACC office and he was taken out in black bag -
The questions are been asked by the public -
the public is not happy with politics, and not every critic is a politician -
Even Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam - chairman of the advisory panets to MACC -
he said he was very upset and disturbed -
MACC interrogators used many tactics to extract information -
and one of the methods used on Teoh was to interrogate him from 5 pm to 3.45 am -
That only people are very upset and angry - nothing political about this.
In fact Zainul should be upset and shocked that MACC officials used this method.
Zainul should be asking such as question and many more -
but Zainul, instead slammed on critics including Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam - and
I think that is uncalled for lah.
Don't lah - everything Zainul must politicised and make it into racial issues...
The people only want the truth, and people are angry - not the Chinese - as Zainul seems to be insinuating...
People are asking questions about the interrogation methods used by MACC officials, and if they have adhered to protocols and guidelines...have they overdone it, etc. And I think that Zainul should encourage Malaysians to be thinking people, not bodoh bodoh lah...
All thinking Malaysians are demanding for the truth...
Zainul, are you demanding for the truth???
MACC officials have said that Teoh was not a suspect or a criminal, but an important witness and that he was very helpful in the investigation - then Zainul as a Malaysian, should be colour blind lah - should ask the question - why interrogate him to the wee hours of the morning - 3.45 am??? Why didn't the officials treat him decently as a human being - hello, be colour blind sikit lah - can question him during office hours????
I think asking such questions - is not politicisation of the death, but seeking for answers.
written by yugong, July 19, 2009
It is their right to accuse the PR Opposition to capitalise on the death of Teoh for political mileage, but to twist their outcry calling for MACC to explain for his death and said that their demand as against Malays because their investigating officials are Malays and Teoh is Chinese is both irresponsibly mischieveous and outrightly racist.
Who is making the issue political? MACC is supposed to be totally independent but why is it that only PR Assemblymen were hurled up for investigation while the well publicised case of ex-Selangor MB, Dr Khir Toyo's luxurious residence was left alone. Why should MACC put itself in a position to be accused of being biased and siding BN against their political opponents?
It is obvious why MACC have been questioned on their professionalism in their "fight" against corruption in this country in handling the recent cases among the Selangor State Assemblymen. Like the independence of the judiciary, the credibility of MACC is important for the survival of this nation as a democratic country.
The irresponsible comments of Zainul and company aimed to divide our country by instigating racial sentiments of disccord, should be combated by everyone including PM Najib who preaches the concept of 1Malaysia.

Sebagai rakyat Malaysia, keturunan bangsa China tapi berjiwa orang Malaysia and always proud of Malaysia but with the recent political development in M'sia, our international status has gone down into the dirty Klang river. For 52 years what have they done, only building twins towers, Sepang F1 track, astronaut and so on, all these are rakyats money. As responsible Rakyat, lets together stop the current government otherswise more people will get killed for no reasons, I don't have to remind you readers who are they but the recent death Teoh Beng Hock RAISE A BIG QUESTION TO THE PUBLICS, the police & MACC is accountable for his death.
What has the MACC & Police done with so many Ah Longs (some Dato's are inviolve, have they being integoratted like TEOH, bullshit MACC & Police they have no balls to question them, for that matter Khir Toyol has not even being investigated professionally.
My house last month has been burglared reported, what has the polioce done, nothing , area where I stay, everyday there are reports on robbery, snatch thief, buglar and so on.
Najis, Mulutmuddin, Kerismuddin and Joker of the year, forget about the PR people, check your UMNO/MCA/MIC people first before going after the PR ADUNS, they have done agood job, if they have RM 500,000 allocation for each DUN, they have not bought any Land and Balinese Resort home but Toyol 8 years as MB, a home at least worth 20 millions, what is MACC doing, bloody Najis what are you doing with him???????????????????
The rakyat of Malaysia is very sick with what you do, all rakyats kick Najis pout of office now or many will die the way Teoh die, irespective of what race you belong tooo...

By raising Racial comments and for that matter very nasty comments which can only be viewed as incendiary, aimed at causing racial trouble, the editors and the owners of the 2 papers should be immediately detained and charged with sedition and for creating racial trouble. Najib should be seen to take action immediately or else his 1Malaysia will be viewed as nothing but cheap talk. The Papers should also be closed immediately for inciting racial trouble.
Najib, we are waiting for you to say/do something. Do you need to ask Rosmah first?

let's be clear, not just the chinese or the indians are furious over what has happened. all malaysians are. this is an old strategy, used over and over again, to silence protests by playing the racial card.
surely our malay brothers and sisters can see through this predictable and despicable overused ploy to use them; a ploy that, not surprisingly, has never been the subject of investigation for its obviously seditious nature.

How much more ridiculous can it get? People are puzzled why a healthy man in his prime mysteriously dropped dead at MACC, doubts began to arise, people start asking questions. THIS also can be twisted as intrirgue to "weaken Malay-controlled institutions".
Everytime people criticize about wrong doing of the UMNO/BN government, it gets twisted as intrigue to weaken Malay-controlled institutions.
UMNO REALLY THINK MALAYS ARE STUPID TO BELIEVE YOU??? UMNO do not represent all Malays, MACC do not represent all Malays, police do not represent Malays.
If they are wrong, they are wrong, don't change the subject.

I now understand and support Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's decision to boycott the newspaper and stopped the state government's subscription of it.
It is simply beyond an intelligent person's comprehension how an editor could arrive at the conclusion that the protest against the high-handed methods of the MACC is a challenge to the Malays.
Only an immature, insecure and not too intelligent person can look at the Teoh Beng Hock case from a racial perspective.
OneMalaysia? Nonsense! If we have people in positions of power and influence with such racialist mentality, there can never be OneMalaysia.
I have just retired as a journalist after nearly 35 years in the profession, and during my years as a reporter, socio-political analyst and editor, I have identified five types of journalists in the media
community.
First, there are the EEs -- Editorial Eunuchs, who take orders from their political emperors and write and spin stories to promote the emperor's cause. These political appointees are usually in top and
senior positions, not because they are good journalists or great writers, but because of their connection to powerful political godfathers. They are first class cronies. Many are ghost writers for
their political masters. Some have become millionaires.
(Note: I thank God that, except for one or two cases, the editors I had worked under are not such people. I can vouch that people like Ng Poh Tip, Michael Aeria, Wong Sulong and Wong Chun Wai are
good people of principle and top class journalists, not EEs. My good friend Chong Cheng Hai, the chief editor of theSun, is another =person of integrity.)
Secondly, there are the PPs -- Press Prositutes, who have sold their souls and principles to gain favours and privileges from their political and/or business clients. They will write what pleases their
political masters. The amount of hampers and gifts they receive during festive seasons is perhaps a good indication of their rising status in their media organisation. (Perhaps the MACC should
consider looking at this practice of giving editors hambers and gifts during festive seasons).
Thirdly, there are the MMs -- Media Marionettes, the puppets who have no brains but are used and abused by opportunists to advance their own political or business agenda. They usually feed such
journalists with twisted information and deceive these gullible writers to propogate their schemes of things. Our education system has produced many such gullible, unthinking, uncritical, and dumb people, and some of them are found in the media organisations.
Fourth, there are the JJs -- Junket Journalists, those who will write anything for the sponsors of their overseas trips.
Finally, there are the WWs -- Wise Writers, the rare breed who know how to survive through the controlled press situation and get their honest views into print without rousing the suspicion of their media bosses, who are usually political cronies. There are very few such honest writers with integrity and principles, and they are usually not in positions of power.
How can we expect to have OneMalaysia when we do not really have a free and credible press? If our prime minister is truly sincere in wanting to take take the country to greater height as OneMalaysia, then the first thing he needs to do is to liberate the press by abolishing the oppressive legal restraints such the Printing Presses and Publications Act, the Internal Security Act, the Official Secrets Act, etc. and enact a Freedom of Information Act. Then, he must revamp the whole system of administration to get rid of those known to be corrupt, racist, and incompetent. Most importantly, there must a reform in the judiciary, enforcement agencies, the election commission, and reinstate local council elections.
OneMalaysia? It will remain a slogan and a dream if the current federal government does not take concrete actions to reform the whole political and administrative enviornment in the country.
If the Barisan Nasional administration is unable to bring about such reforms, then we must throw it out at the next general election.

Thing with these BN owned media... even if their sales drop to just one copy a day, the editors can always count upon the BN government to bail them out no matter how bad their circulation & losses are. They know BN needs them as a propaganda tool, as much as they need BN to fund their salaries.

The questions to ask: Are these two running the propaganda for him or someone else who has great ambition to attain the highest office in the government. Is Najib being undermined by "covert racists" with agenda of their own?
If winning the next election is the PM's top priority, then his present appointees are not going to do him any good. They will fail him miserably as they continue their stupid ways to alienate the people. The same can be said of the new Malay Mail editor in chief who is just as bad as his cronies mentioned above. They are all cut from the same cloth. And this is a great loss to Malaysian journalism which is now a shambolic vehicle for a party that is corrupt and has no qualms to abuse human rights.

You are such a racist, trying to relate this death incident as a race related issue! You deserved to be lock up for fanning hatred among races.
I wonder how people such as you could be the New Straits Times group managing editor Zainul Ariffin Isa?
How could people like you with such bigoted mind set could hold such a top position? You are a shame to the Malaysian society. I don’t mind pulling the trigger to blow your mind out since yours is a threat to the national security.
written by mut, July 20, 2009
Because he thought UMNO members (including MACC) were acting unfairly! Do I need to break it down for Zainul and UMNO members? Or by extension, does Zainul and UMNO think all Malays are fair?
Talk about bizarre absolutes .......

Zainul's article totally displays the state mind of a twisted person which is full of illogical crookedness.
“Why did the Selangor MB, a Malay, question those of his own race to act fairly?” - managing editor of NST group Zainul Ariffin Isa
Can one understand now why UMNO are incapable of reflecting upon themselves? Why UMNO could never learn from mistakes and why UMNO can never change for the better?
In his writing, the answer manifests.
Zainul is unsuitable to head NST.
(Seeing from that angle...)
UMNO are unsuitable to head Malaysia.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH UTUSAN MALAYSIA, BERITA HARIAN, TV3 & RTM, why are you always playing on racial lines and dividing the nation ? TOGATHER WE BUILT MALAYSIA TO WHAT IT IS TODAY. We are MALAYSIANS and every race has contributed tremendously to develop our beautiful country MALAYSIA.
WE have to unite as a whole nation to point out the wrongs of our leaders. If our leader has done something wrong then it is our duty for the sake of our children, the future generation & the country to correct the wrong and bring on the right for the rakyat sake.
Don’t forget it is our children who is going to be affected for our mistakes by playing up the racial & racist talks. By closing an eye for short term gain we are actually PENDERHAKA to our nation. Only strong, correct foundation will keeps us all united & strong.
If we condone all the wrong doings of what is happening now then we are considered to be traitors to our children, our future generation, our loved once & to this beautiful country MALAYSIA.
WAKE UP before it is to late, the NEP and many projects and many subsidies have been misused for the gains of certain political leaders & politicians and implementators, Billions were given out, howcome our Malay brothers & sisters are still in poverty.
