KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — With the public baying for blood over the mysterious death of political secretary Teoh Beng Hock, talk has been rife that the national anti-graft body's top advisers might quit or demand changes to interrogation procedures.
Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam, who heads one of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) five advisory panels, confirmed today that several of his fellow advisers have indicated they may quit their appointed posts to protest the methods in which witnesses are questioned for information.
While he said none have openly declared they would step down for certain, the chief of the Panel on Consultation and Prevention of Corruption seemed to feel the rising heat and pressure from the public.
“Speaking for myself, I want to carry on,” Navaratnam told The Malaysian Insider when asked if he would step down in protest.
“No point in resigning. That's the easy way out. We've got a public trust to fulfil,” the former civil servant explained, stressing that the challenge was in taking accountability for something he had committed himself to.
Navaratnam said he fully backs the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate the MACC, which is suspected to have had a hand in the death of Teoh.
The 30-year-old had been questioned for over eight hours straight by an MACC officer on a case of alleged fraud over state funds involving his boss, Selangor exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah.
The MACC said it released him at 3.45am on the day he was to get married. His body was found sprawled on the rooftop of the block beside the MACC's headquarters in Shah Alam at 1.30pm later that same day.
Navaratnam pointed out he was the first among the 42 people who were appointed early this year to oversee the fledgling MACC to publicly condemn the manner in which the officers carried out their job.
Six months ago when it was launched, the MACC enjoyed the full weight of public approval behind it as it took over the anti-graft fight from disgraced predecessor, the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA), although the personnel remained the same.
Today, the supposed giant of reform is reeling from the full weight of the public's fury.

Give the government the ultimatum to move the MACC under the direct oversight of the parliament. This is the only way to make sure MACC can be reformed. As it has been, MACC was given more power, but not more oversight. What is it they say about power and absolute power?
Or else, quit.

But, I think he should quit so that he may not be accused of "attempting to undermine the MACC", one of the many "Malay-controlled institutions", according to Umno-controlled Berita Minggu and Mingguan Malaysia, when he, Ramon needs to make a stand on integrity.
As a matter of fact, along the same argument of these UMNO-controlled media, the official mouth piece of UMNO, all non-Malay should quit all post link to all other "Malay-controlled institutions" like PDRM, Judiciary, Election Commission, the Army, etc so as not to be accused of some kind of "attempting to undermine the Malay-controlled institutions", when the time comes for them to make a stand on right or wrong.
"Malay-controlled institutions"?????!!!!! What happened to 1Malaysia?

The most honorable thing to do -
failure to protect lives and the failure of the advisory panels to ensure professionalism of MACC -
that these advisors should resign.
As advisor, you have no power.
Now Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam has been calling for the setting up of the Royal Commission -
but your appeal apparently has gone to deaf ears.
The interrogation - more than 8 hours, or about 11 hours - 5 pm to 3.45 am -
This reason alone - such long and marathon hours of subjecting a helpful witness, not a suspect nor a criminal - this reason is good enough to demand all top guns in MACC - especially Ahmad Said as MACC chief to appologise to the family and fiancee and to resign...
Not one word of appology at this time - shame.
In this case, all the leaders of the advisory panels should appologise on behalf of MACC - for such cruel methods of questioning a witness or a suspect.
Tan Sri - why don't you show them the example - you appologise first - otherwise, you should resign lah - and I think for me, for you - that is the harder thing to do than to stay on.

They are following Singapore's style of making opposition leaders bankrupt so that they cannot participate in the political process. In Malaysia the way to go is to charge them in court or in the media for corruption so that the public will see that the opposition members are no better than the BN leaders.

"case going to transfer to Bukit Aman, so that there will be more collabrated and coordinated effort to get instructions from the very top to reconstruct the "evidences" for a covered up homocide". Oh well, evidences will be lost and containminated also during the transfer. Case closed!!!
Mark my word for it. Don't expect anything close to any kind of investigation will take place. They will put up a show as long as the regime in power. Sooner or later may even make Robert Mugabe and Charles Taylor look like a saints.

Malaysians are tolerant and are ready to be injured, to be abducted, to be killed and we remain silent.
Let the Government do what it wants...to remain in power.
We allow the people we voted in to keep their seats and encourage them to bully us. We are useless.
Now we know why persons like Dato' Zaid Ibrahim, Y.M Tunku Aziz, Dato' Syed Ahmad Idid are purposely kept OUT of the various Anti-Corription panels or committees. They want only OBEDIENT slvaes. Still we Malaysians remain cool, we just sit and shit. And THEY continue to ravage our land!

In 6 months, MACC has achieved a bigger disgrace than ACA. Does the glitters improved anything? No. it did not. But they managed to hide the dirt for a while. This is time the glitters are removed. It is dishonest. It is untruthful.
Resign. Resign. Resign.

Did you hear anything about that fellow who was in the news for the wrong reasons, having built a palace with money that seems to have fallen from the sky? I don't think MACC is interested to investigate him. They are just going after opposition MPs and Assemblymen to investigate alleged "corruption" involving peanuts.
In this case, their plans have backfired and their poor victim was Teoh. Let us pray that Teoh did not die in vain and those responsible will be brought to justice. May his soul rest in peace..

When the personnel in MACC remain the same as the disgraced predecessor ACA, HOW COULD IT BE SAID TO HAVE BEEN REFORMED!???
When there is a reform, it must BE IN SUBSTANCE, NOT ONLY IN form!
It is just a mockery and a great joke!
Let there be TRUE AND REAL REFORM, please...
Malaysians are tired of being duped and taken for rides...and don't pull any more wool over our eyes, there is just too much wool already from previous jokes and mockeries!

The MACC is simply a rebranding of ACA. Why have the same group of personnel running the MACC that are from the ACA. It is simply the change of name but the modus operandi is the same. We the public are sick of the government institution that thinks that they are there to serve the ruling government. They are suppose to serve the public and they should and will be held accountable for their actions. These hooligans are worse than our common day gangster on the street!

Suspend the MACC's Chief and all those directly and indirectly involve in this case that lead to the demised of Teoh. If the royal commission found they are innocent, their positions will be re-instated. If found quilty, they should be prosecuted to the maximum of the law.
Meanwhile the government should also consider suspending Utusan Melayu's paper, their chief and their editor for the racist statement made by them. This country does not need such racist people around. They are the liability of the country and the cause of divide.
This should apply to all politicians and also other medias. This is to set a precedent and warning to all those who playing racist card. This country want to unite the people and not divide. Those who want to divide should resign from their positions.
This should be the first step. Anything less will be unacceptable.

The MACC have proved that they are incapable and probably grossly incompetent in investigating any case without using strong arm tactics. And their action in steering clear of alleged practices of BN and UMNO personalties and leaders also indicate their clear bias. They are in fact a joke to most Malaysians.
The Government needs to act immediately to clear the decks of all these abuses by the MACC if they are to avoid further condemnation internationally and the country placed in the bottom heap of the most corrupt countries in the world. And the contrast with our closest neighbour makes our position all the more shameful.

Maybe Ramon can tell us what he has done to highlight to the MACC that after the BN takeover of Perak the silence over MACC charge of corruption of the two PKR ADUNS who, since then have become independents and support the BN, shows clearly their intent in that episode was just to corruptly employ their powers to achieve what has been achieved.
They accused the {Enang ADUN of corruption, bt after he insisted on resigning they let him go.
In investigating the Selangor PR ADUNS for misuse of funds they seem to be telling us that they canot see the elephant in the room. But they seem to be seeing ghosts of rats running around between the elephant.
We don't need his condenmation. But what kind of advsor are you, Ramon, when your client is doing things to undermine their repotation?

Well, Mr Navaratnam, your fellow advisers are resigning for the WRONG reason and you are staying on for the WRONG reason. Your fellow advisers should resign in protest against the BN's use of the MACC as a POLITICAL WEAPON against the Pakatan Rakyat which culminates in the death of Teoh Beng Hock. If they had not used it as a political weapon, the death would not had happened. If you are only looking at the "methods of interrogation", you are already looking at the wrong place.
And by the way, Mr Navaratnam, you should resign for the same reason stated above.

1. "Corruption money recovered by MACC (Macro matters) - MACC operating cost = Public Fund which MACC Recovered for the Public benefits"
or
2. "Corruption money recovered by MACC (Micro matters)- MACC operating cost = Additional tax payer which MACC help to spent"

Public confidence and perception are hard to change.
