KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — In what appeared to be a veiled criticism of the prime minister’s economic reforms, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad played the race card in a posting on his blog yesterday by claiming that non-Malays, and particularly the Chinese, were the real masters of the country.
While he did not name the prime minister, Mahathir put up a stout defence of the NEP with well-worn arguments in what appeared to be an expression of concern over the current administration’s economic liberalisation policies.
“Because they (the Malays) are willing to share their country with other races, the race from the older civilisation of more than 4,000 years and who are more successful, as such today whatever they have now is also being taken away from them,” he wrote in what appeared to be a reference to the Chinese community.
Datuk Seri Najib Razak has announced reforms to the capital markets, taking away the 30 per cent Bumiputera requirement, sparking concerns among some Malays that government protection for them was being taken away.
The prime minister also announced recently the setting up of a merit-based scholarship programme in what was seen as an attempt to appease the non-Malay communities who have been complaining of unfair distribution of aid for top students.
But Mahathir argued in his latest blog post that 39 years after the NEP was introduced, the Bumiputera share of the corporate pie remained at just 20 per cent while the Chinese share stood at 50 per cent even though they consisted of just 26 per cent of the population.
“The Bumiputera property holdings are only 15 per cent while the rest are held by non-Bumiputeras because urban property is worth more than rural property.
“Non-Malay leaders who put themselves in the shoes of the Malays, if they are honest, will feel the disappointment of the Malays in seeing nearly all business and industry in the hands of the non-Malays.”
Those who lived in high-end housing estates were mostly non-Malays, he said while claiming that a significant number of Malays lived in squatter houses.
The latest remarks by Dr Mahathir, who still commands significant support among Umno members, could potentially stoke nationalist sentiments against Najib’s reforms.
In defending the NEP, Mahathir is also signalling once again his displeasure with some of Najib’s policy directions.
Last week, Mahathir criticised the government for reversing his policy of teaching science and mathematics in English.
In his latest comments, the fiery former PM said the NEP was not introduced by force, or by seizing assets, but was even amended many times when there were non-Malay objections.
He pointed out, in oft-heard arguments made by Malay nationalists, that the Malays had gave non-Malays voting rights and citizenship during independence.
“At that time the official name for the country was the Federation of Malay States (Semenanjung Tanah Melayu) but when it was joined with Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak it became Malaysia.
“With that, the identity of the Malays in their own country was lost,” he said.
Mahathir anticipated that “with this article I am sure to be branded a racist by the non-Malay racists”.
“But if they are willing to accept the truth they can compare the sacrifices of the Malays who are the original owners of this land with their sacrifices for the interests of the country.”
He argued that the way forward for peace and progress was for the distribution of wealth in the country to be fair even if unequal.

I would like to quote a Chinese proverb, 'You can't force the bull to drink unless it wants to drink'
Why only 20% after 39 years? Apart from the Alibaba deals, I tell you why. It is the culture. There needs to be tectonic fundamental shift in the Malay culture and attitude towards embracing entrepreunerism.
After 39 years, it is time to change to another approach.

What happened to his policy ? What did he do for the Malays during his regime? Why are the Malays still backward? Why was BM used as medium of instruction durimg his time? Wasn't it a mistake which he tried t o rectify by having English as a medium of instruction in teaching Mathematics and Science. Alas, it is too late! What is worse is that the new PM reversed his education policy!
How many qualified students enter the University? And how many graduates are unemployable as a result of his policy? What is the use of turning Public Universities as a mill to churn out unemployable graduates into the job market. If they speak no English, how could they be employed? Private companies are not Santa Clauses!
So, where do they turn to for jobs? Government sector!
So, who impoverishes them?
A man must be sincere. If he is not sincere, his true colours show up!

I do hope the moderation that all the racial community in Malaysia uphold until today will be continuously prospered and live longer.

The Chinese and Indians who were brought to Malaya then are like the Africans that were brought to America to work the lands (Chinese were also in America to work the rail roads).
In the case of American, it took a mighty chap called Abraham Lincoln to initiate the process of freedom and rights to the Negroes who are now rightly called African Americans.
Malaysia is in the same process caused, not by the goodness of the heart of Najib (Mahathir would have to do likewise), but by the stark realities of the globalised world ...... Malays, Indians, Chinese are to be rightly called Bangsa Malaysia.
Tun Mahathir is truly of a different era and has rightly been put to pasture.

Kenapa hanya mengutamakan Ketuanan Melayu Tun?

Well Mahathir is not being racist this time, but he up to something for sure.
Judging from his previous patterns as he plotted against Badawi, he is now pointing gun barrels at Najib.
Mahathir knows that Najib is more capable of brutality than Badawi, to confront with Najib, he needs strong excuses, and he needs to draw vast support to his side. Nobody was listening to him when he objected Najib's new economical approach, he did not get the attention when Najib also turned down proposal of reviving his crooked bridge.
Playing the racial card has been his strong suit, but he probably is getting old, suffering from lapsus memoriae as he forgot that when he was shooting Badawi down he also mentioned that UMNO's Malays (in reference to Badawi and Khairy gang) had gathered more wealth. His flip-flopping has seen the precentage figure of how wealth is distributed in the country changed all too often.
Surely, there are thick skulls who still believe in Mahathir, but the number is decreasing sharply. Najib is no push-over like Badawi, it might be too much for an aged Mahathir to topple him.
Try harder Toon Mahathir, you may need to bring up your archaic "Perjuangan Melayu" theory again, see if it still works; shed some tears, that might dramatize it a bit.

I recently was able to work in a American-Vietnamese community. The successful ones are Chinese Vietnamese by a long shot.
So it is not about NEP or 1Malaysia. It is about the genes, the culture, the family, the attitude, the values that is unique. Politicians should not play God.
You want Malaysia to be like Singapore? Remove all the crutches and apply free , unfretted trade and meritocracy. The Indians and Chinese would bring the per capita GDP up many many fold. In the same vein, curtail the Indians and Chinese or even remove them and the national economy will nose dive. That TDM is the dilemma.

Dr. M greatest spin is to equate a share with a 10 sen par value with a share with a RM1.00 par value, conveniently ignoring their respective market values.
Dr. M's legacy can be seen in the tens of thousands of our local graduates having to turn to the civil service for employment and not being able to stand on their own feets even when times are good.
Dr. M's greatest shame is to hear Singaporeans coming to our country chirping

These has been going on for years. Meaning, all these while they have been thinking of their own pocket rather and taking what rightfully for the rural and the poor. If these were the case, why now, not donate their wealth to the rural and poor to make it even.

If the 20% benchmark is true, then the distribution of wealth among the Malays is not fairly allocated and the bulk of it have gone to cronies from the largest political party i.e. UMNO. So, this is the legacy left by the longest serving PM to his party :- a bunch of cronies!!!!! and he has the cheek to blame the Malaysian Chinese. I pity the common and poor Malay and Asli folks some of which are still without electricity and water. We need a extensive reform in how UMNO works to repair the damage this Tun has done to it and if all else fails, to let another poilitical party govern this beautiful country.
Tun, at this time in you life, you should speak what is factual and not lies to suit your personal agenda. You are a master of divide and rule tactic. You even do that with your own party. In business, we have to rely on smart alliances to succeed. If we refuse to joint venture or cooperate with others because we want to do everything ourselves from ZERO, (meaning keep ALL the profits) we are not going to get far.
It will surely backfire.
Because you want to have more, so somebody has to sacrifice and take less? This is not natural. You are not aware of the Power of Being. If you win today, one day you will lose. This is the natural law of the world that we are born in, if you think that you have to win, so that somebody has to lose (read A NEW EARTH by Eckart Tolle).
Malaysia is BLESSED with the environment of smart alliances because of our multi-ethnic population.
Why do you keep using your narrow-minded racial tunnel vision? Just admit that your policy didn't work. Use this blessing that we have. DON'T KEEP BLAMING OTHERS FOR YOUR FAILURE.
The LAW OF EVOLUTION (even tho I'm not a scientist) will show you that when a species faces extinction or threat to its survival, it will grow and develop even bigger to survive, despite of the limitations -- or die. Which one do you want to be?
Narrow-minded thinking like yours has no place in this ever-changing world. Everyone whether, black, white, Malay or Chinese is human. Don't be a selfish brat! And don't make your children into selfish brats who just depend on hand-outs.
Haven't you heard, "give a man fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."

Do you really need another 50 years to prive the principle wrong? Don't you think it's time to put the Malays on par with the Chinese, Indians, Kadazan etc. so that they too can flourish proudly without any special aid? Why can't you let your successors do things their own ways? Why is everything done against your wish wrong?

Give us a business plan, a workable one please and see how things can move forward for the deprived Malays. You must come with clean hands for if your hands are soiled, the results will be the same, non achievement.
Are you prepared to bite the bullet and accept a non Malay to run the NEP program for you without any political interference? If the answer is a no, then I think you are not ready to face the reality on the ground and the poor Malays will remain poor because of your inability to confront certain issues that is really personal in nature.

As for Tun Mahathir, he himself has created a number of chinese billionaires and millionairs. Vincent Tan was a struggling ex second hand car and insurance salesman who just got the Mc Donald's franchise when he was gifted with Sports Toto by Tun M. The YTL group was also not doing well, until Tun gave them the IPP licence on a silver platter. Lee Kim Yew was rescued by the govt when his Mines project faced severe cash flow problems. Robert Tan was given the franchise to rent and maintain all govt vehicles. Ting Peck King is still getting huge 'negotiated' contracts from the govt.
There are scores more of chinese businessmen who have benefited from UMNO politicians. Azim Zabidi is the chairman of the company owned by Tiong in the PKFZ fiasco. So for those who say that the chinese are skilled and entrepreneural etc etc, it is only partly true. They have thrived in South East Asian countries, where corruption is rampant, and where politicians can be bought. The malays on the other hand are laid back and lulled into complacency by the few crumbs thrown at them as chairmen and directors of companies.

Friend, where in the world did you dig up this term Indonesian Malay Malaysian? Did you make it up?
Indonesia only existed in the late 40s lah, coined by a mat-salleh who changed his name to Setia Budi. It's a nationality, not race, not ethnic. Nusantara is split by many hundreds(if not thousands) of indigenous tribes Minang, Aceh, Jawa, Bugis, Banjar, Senoi, Negrito, Sulu, Madura etc just like the Chinese with their Teocheo, Hakka, Canton, Hainan; Indians with Punjabi, Malayalams etc; and Arabs with their various tribes. Indonesia and Malaysia(Malaya) are later-formed nations and nothing more than political-partitions set up in the Middle East.
Can't help noticing you use nationality labels for Chinese and Indians but go tribal and provincial with the ethnic Malays. Perhaps that's your way to divide us.

However, having loose his influence, he has a very influential tool nowadays on the Malaysia society - his blog cedet.com. it is obvious that he is trying to create chaos through his blog out of this jealosusy and imbalance of him. He is not happy when his predecessors do not implement his policies and he is not happy when someone else is more popular than him. He think he is the father so that everyone must still listen to him. In fact, he only pursue his own ego but does not think in the interest of the country at all. Therefore, instead of watching his influence vanished and his words falling on death ears, he created chaos to let Malaysia go down. He wants to show Malaysian the fact that if he can create something, he can also destroy it. In this respect, I am sure he will continue to come out with more race sensitive statements because he knows very well only these kinds of statements will bring Malaysia down. Let's watch his move closely. Malaysia is smart enough not to fall into his trap.
BTW, we read news from all around the world, not from racist Utusan.

then how come teoh beng hock was given to die like a slave? and how is that you conveniently forgot to hand over the primeministership to a chinese minister such as ong tee keat who might have helped to bring malaysia to the status of japan or hongkong?
because of your folly, you handed the position to bodowi who stopped all your castles in the air, and who nearly brought the country to its knees.
wake up oldman. do something more constructive for the country instead of harping on race and religion and dreams that are destined to remain dreams.

Don't try to play racial tonality here we had enough of NEP, 513, systematic decrimination, the division of bumiputra and non-bumiputra. End of the day we are all Malaysian - the moment you are born here - is in our constitution and is our entitlement.
Our former leaders have achieve merdeka - their intention is not divide the people but unite them by all means, how come after 22 years of leading the country - you still fail to unite the people. There must be something wrong with your policies and you refuse to acknowledge that you had been wrong.
For Rini - have you analyse with statistics support - the wealthy chinese in Malaysia consist of less than 5% of the Chinese population of 6 million. The wealth control in Malaysia is share amount the tycoon of Malaysia regardless of their race. 95% of Malaysian population belong to hardcore poor, middle class, upper middle class - the same pattern goes to every country in the world.
Not all Chinese are rich - we had poor and middle class chinese as well, but there were not given a chance to benefit from the nation - when all of us are eager tax payer.
The point is it not race that determine your wealth - it's you, your attitude, your determination and willingness to compete in the global market. If you can't even if you are chinese -it's useless. So Rini - don't for once blame other people for their wealth - what have you done to help your people to prosper. Did you not help yourself first.
I know many malay, india and many other race in Malaysia that are intelligent but can't make it due to the fact that the government have been sucking every dollar that you earn till you dry. So RIni - maybe we should stand together againts bad leardership, corruption and abuse of human rights instead of harping on who has what wealth.
Until the nation and government system are been clean up, no matter how much money you make - it's meaningless. No more racial politics, WE ARE MALAYSIAN.

What happened to all the Orang Alis, Iban, Penan, Kadazan etc...now ? Are them being marginalised ?

How about this, Najib has claimed since the beginning of the NEP, RM52 billion in stock and share have been given to the Malays. Of that RM50 billion have been sold!
Does that mean that there are 50 000 malay millionaire?
I am lucky to see RM250,000 at the end of my life, let alone RM 1 million.

When I am growing up I had learn to respect this men, today I realize he had contributed to nation progress but also rob the nation of good governance. I had no opportunity to taste a good country since I am born in the 70's, I am a generation that the nation almost forgotten that I existed by systematic descrimination, but reluctantly to surrender to such predicament - we change ourselves - improve through knowledge, hardwork and determination - to be able to supply to my small family needs.
But the nation wealth have been rob and the country sovereignty have been rape by its own leaders. Remember the roman empire downfall was their own doing - not their enemy. Oh gosh :) I seriously just can't stop laughing about this.
Guys and girls, don't be mad at this fella. He doesn't really pull out a political joke that often. Hence we must appreciate whenever he does. :-)
Ok la Mahathir.... How bout this....
Race Percentage = 65% Malays, 25% Chinese, 10% Indians and lain lain.
So let's be fair (i.e if you know that word. If not, please go to www.dictionary.com)
State Segregation = 65% of the state to Malays, 25% to Chinese, 10% to Indians and lain-lain.
Hence,
Malays can have Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Kedah, Selangor, Willayah, Johor
Chinese can have Penang and Perlis, Terrenganu, Kedah
Indians and lain-lain can have Kelantan
Ok? Apa macam Mahathir?

Pandangan Keseleruhan landskap Malaysia kini
Negara kita ada 13 negeri and 1 wilayah persekutuan.
Anih nya , bahagian barat malaysia barat umun nya and khusus nya Lembah Kelang telah menikmati kekayaan negara kita.
Pendek nya tun
Banyak hajat NEP yang baik pun di goda and perkosa kan, banyak Wang Rakyat yang kerjaan telah membazir and tidak kena pada sasaran nya
Satu contoh yang mudah, Kalau kita buat polisi untuk memberi pertologan kewangan , pendidikan and biasiwa kepada semua di bawah takat RM 1500 sebulan tanpa kira kaum - akan kita saksi kan 6 melayu, 2 china , 1 india and 1 lain lain - ikut hitungan Tun sendiri mendapat bantuan , sekira dilaksana kan dengan betul and tidak mengira warna(color blind) , tapi bukan ini yang kita buat
53 tahun kita merdeka, tun sendiri berhujah hendak melihat Rakyat berbilang bangsa mengelar diri mereka bangsa Malaysia.

Instead of occasionally commenting/criticising his successor, maybe he should write a memoir (like what LKY did; -eg.one book title "From Third World to First World", etc..) then only people are more convinced about what he claims, instead of leaving many controversial argument...

I took it that The Malaysian Insider harboured noble aspirations of serving fellow Malaysians with good news coverage.
I was under the impression that your credibility in media was a tribute to Malaysians but allowing such commentaries from the likes of Abraham (Saintly name but, Krishna (named after a so called God but reflects thrash) Huang SH, is this for real (still not able to see reality) ktteokt, Ash (nothing but only burnt out sinders) Jit Dharma, Observer, Tun Rasuah, chin, and the jakun who behaves like one) and the many other.……..
Fully comprehending that these low down commentators are but the scum of society and cannot even being the dust under the Tun Dr Mahathir’s shoes, I find it you allow for such people a forum in your media.
Who are these people? They are nothing, yet you find pride in not filtering such scum to scavenge and forage your media!
If these people had been schooled or taught by their parents they would accord the Tun some respect when critising him!
It is also sad that they seem to be long to the same racial origin!
This goes to the question of The Malaysian Insider’s credibility who seem to encourage racial hatred and battering in Malaysia!

You say one thing do another and if your decision screwed up you find somebody to responsible for it? I think it is time for you to shut up and let our beloved Najib (PM) to manage the country the way he think it is good for all malaysian. Let me ask you one more question Tun before i pen off. Do you think Najib will do harm to his country men for all the decisions he made and not for the good of his people? If not then you better keep your bloody mouth shut and let Najib do his job. Base on mathematically, Malays have 60% and non-Malays (pure chinese 30%) meaning that today Malaysia have 100% more wealth AND.......

Let me ask you one thing Dr M, most malays have been in this country longer than the Chinese and Indians, why are they not more successful than the newcomers ? Why did the British need to bring in Chinese and Indian labourers when there were local malay labourers aplenty. ? Is it because they were not as hard working or not as intelligent as the Chinese and Indians ? Perhaps this is the same reason why they are now not as successful as the Chinese.

He spews this racist diatribe in the guise of a voodoo sociological thesis, and then has the cheek to announce that those most likely to take him to task over this will be the "non-Malay racists"?
But then, this is the Vintage Mahathir: a toxic mix of racist ghetto mindset, inability to own up to mistakes, and a pathological drive to meddle where he's not needed.
His legacy? A Malaysia preoccupied with the external trappings of "development" and religiousity, and saddled with a culture of impunity and corruption deeply ingrained in at least 2 generations of her populace.
One can easily trace the dirty footprints of everything that's wrong with this country all the way to at least one of his policies or practices over his 22-year tenure.
