UPDATED
PENANG, Aug 13 — The controversial demolition of Kampung Buah Pala has been postponed to Sept 1, after a tense standoff today between villagers, the land owners and police.
George Town OCPD Azam Abd Hamid said today an agreement had been reached with all parties to postpone the court-ordered demolition.
Bulldozers were sent in this morning into the village to demolish the houses whose residents refused to move out of the disputed piece of land.
Police had earlier cordoned off the village as the deadline for the residents to move out ended today.
The residents had earlier refused to take up the developers’ offer of double-storey houses to move out.
Scores of residents and members of non-governmental organisations sat in the rain to form a human barricade to prevent the heavy machinery from destroying their homes.
Police presence was heavy and some villagers claimed that the police were resorting to “violence” to disperse them.
There was much shouting and pushing throughout the morning, with villagers, representatives of NGOs and political parties trying to prevent demolition work from starting.
Kampung Buah Pala residents have argued that they are victims of a land scam perpetrated by the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) administration.
The DAP-led Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state government had negotiated an offer from the developer of double-storey terrace houses in return for the villagers moving out.
But this was rejected by a majority of the villagers.
Last week Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said his administration would wash their hands of the controversy since the offer had been rejected.
The land owners, who want to build apartments on the land, had won a court case against the villagers to have them evicted.
But the villagers, backed by Hindraf leaders who claimed the village of cowherds was an Indian heritage, wanted the state government to sign over the land to them.
The original settlers of the village had been workers in a British-owned plantation. When the planters left the original settlers were allowed to live on the land based on a trust administered by the colonial administration.
After independence the land was converted to temporary occupational licence (TOL) status as the new Penang state government in 1957 was unwilling to act as trustees.
During Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon’s administration, the land, which belonged to the state, was sold.
Hindraf and MIC leaders have attempted to turn the issue into a racial dispute, but the issue has not gained much traction, and public sympathy appears to have swung against the villagers after they rejected the offer of double-storey houses.

The squatters have specially reserved the best cow, ready and in full battle regalias, for their commander, Semi,...but the ganglord is still AWOL. The hindraf mob has been told to get back into formation, and be ready with coconut oil bombs to guard the west flank. Bullock carts and their drivers are now in position to seal off the main monsoon drain entry on the northern front. Muthu will be sounding the battle horn anytime soon.
Folks, this lastest production by bolehwood is a sure award winner.

Offers were made. Tolerence was maintained. But it seems like a double storey house does not even come close to fulfill the hunger of greed of these illegal quatters.

The house that the developer is going to give them is worth RM500K not RM260k. You wont find a 1400sqf house in penang for anything less than 400k nowadays.
Almost all the penangites i know support the demolition of the houses. The villagers have gone too far, and they have become arrogant even when DAP leaders sincerely trying to help them.
I hope hindraf now can help them. Uthayakumar, tell us why you were released from ISA? Nowadays it seems you are very hostile towards Pakatan Rakyat struggle. Any condition or behind the scene agreement for your released? haha...we all know very well how a two headed snakes work! and it seems like your brother is enjoying his life in UK and often travelling here and there using the money the supporters donated. Any plan to itemized the hundreds of thousand donation? Years have pass, but we see nothing.....

It's easy to ask somebody to come out with millions of compensations, what about you Hindraf and MIC? why don't you just pay them, or at least give each one 1/2 million. otherwise is fair to brand them indian killer good for nothing but fight for own agenda by victimize fellow indians. I can assure you that these buggers are not even willing to pay a single cent. They just want to screw around. So far have done nothing but to instigate the innocents and naif indians.
4 millions for each indian in Malaysia? poooooodah..........paitiong.
God bless those who have gone against Hindraf and agreed on the terms, the development has eventually set you and your future generations free, congratulations.

it is too late. "Ane" yishan, say whatever you like. living >100 years as illegal squatters is a sheer crime nothing to be proud of.
But wait, there are 500 more squatters need help and waiting for compensations in Butterworth, let's focus on them, help them to get their 100K apartments asap. they are reasonable people consists of Indians, Chinese and Malays minus Hindraf and MIC.
Let's Hindraf and MIC prove themselves by helping the remaining dozen of kg palia greedy villagers. I'm sure yishan will be proud of their every effort. They will show us how indians supposed to be helped and treated fairly better than the rest.
Rumbek nandri.

Lets face it ; this is the first time an offer of a free double storey house for those who are willing to move out from their titleless home.
In the past , most of the people who were evicted only got a flat or low cost house and they had to pay for it and some didn’t even get a single piece of roof tile.

Are you saying all the people who had been following this are all misinformed and you are the only one informed about the FACTs. And has LGE not tried his best to help in getting the best possible deal for the SQUATTERS. May I remind you most people started off on the side of the squatters. But it is due to their stupidity being manupulated by the oppotunist politicians and the useless and unreasonable hindraf that people got pissed off with their arrogance towards the CM, greed and gangster tactics.
In cases like this ( anywhere in the world), it is between the residents and the landowners, and they fight in out in the courts of LAW all the way to the highest court in the land. The court's final decision is final and even the PM can do nothing about it. This is called "RULE BY LAW" in a democracy. Unless you can cast and argue solid doubts about the judges judgements ( which in this case, there don't seem to be any public outcry about the judges ), no one in the country can overturn the rulings of the courts, let alone the ruling of the highest court in the land. Doing so will be an act of Contempt of Court. Is that what you are asking LGE to do?
Why do you think the BAR Council ( which has so many indian lawyers) is silent on this matter that has received so much public interest?
Think before you shoot from the hip. Don't turn this into a racial matter. Your arguments above contains no tangibles at all for an intelligent debate.
Remember, Squatters get evicted anywhere and everywhere in the world. Squatters are a hindrence to progress and development. Call it a cold cruel FACT of life if you like. These matters can only be solved through compassion in the spirit of humanity.....not arrogance, greed and stubborness. Compassion has been shown but was rejected.
Start the Bulldozers.

Sugumaran added that the residents were not bothered by the fact that the developer was no longer interested in offering them the house deal.
What an arrogant Indian hero! Let's wait and see.
The next day,
The developer added that the they were not bothered by the fact that the illegal squatters are still interested in offering of the 500k house deal since they are still living with cow dung. Many thks to Sugumaran.

a double storey house for squatting on land which actually belong to the government - that's a super deal. anyway, those who are clamouring for more should go see the previous government because it is not the present government that sold the land.
and they should thank their lucky stars for the negotiations that yielded them a decent double storey house. wake up, stupid villagers!

Sure, they would have move out at less than RM500k. Enough to buy a double storey house without having to pay bank loan would be a paradise isn't it? Probably that's how Chinese are thought to be better at making business, lol.
written by change28, August 13, 2009
I wonder what is the outcome if Buah Pala residents happen to Chinese. The outcome will be much different. Most Penangites are just plain racialists.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Had the villagers been Chinese, they would have accepted the offer of the DS house and move. It would have been the pragmatic thing to do.
There is really no legal basis for the villagers to fight on. Why was there no protest when the BN/Gerakan State Government allowed the land to be sold?
As the song goes: "You have to know when to fold and when to hold"

If the villagers were Chinese, they will not be so stupid as to not take the offer of terrace house. Not enough space for extended family and cows? Never mind, take the title of the free house worth 500k to the bank, ask for refinancing to buy 10 more houses/condos/shops/cows lands etc by paying 10% or even 0% downpayment (no need buy Penang) then rent out and reap + cash flow, stupid cows.

It's just plain stupid for people to turn this into a racial thing. But for Soloman's sake. ...If it squatters were Chinese, and they behaved in the manner these squatters in KBP are behaving, I can asure you that Chinese all over Malaysia will never support them...not just Penangites.
Btw, pls. please correct your english in your last sentence if you meant to say Penangites are racist.

No, you are wrong. They will let out the RM500K d/s house for a princely rent, while they rent a low-cost apartment to stay in.

This has nothing to do about race. I had seen my friend who was compensated for only $40k, to vacate for bungalow projects in penang. And this happens during the reign of Gerakan. Do you think these people would be able to afford to get thier own bungalow house with the current business they are in? Not to brand them opportunists, a double story simply costs around $500k even for a 2nd hand terrace at some residential areas in Penang. Hope they would realize this as a good means of upgrading their living standards than in the current living conditions. Do get me wrong, even building a double story house would swallow at least $275-300k on your own piece of land. Maybe one should consult them with the morals of the story "who moved my cheese".

Sometimes I really wonder and regret why Indian still cannot get rid of their thousand years parxx title and behavior inherited from their ancestors, well may be they are destinated to be one. Let kg pala be the showcase for visitors all over the world to find out what Hindu parxx the untouchable is all about? I mean no offence. see how they rear cows and make use of cow dung & dropping for almost everything in their life including cooking and washing? If this is so call heritage, If this is what you people want then I rest my case. Well I have Randy in front of Arumugam, you know what I mean.

Some Indians are extremely clever but most of them are not,
Because of brahmin against parxx culture & heritage.
Not nice to hear but it is still a reality today.
By not saying it doesn't mean it is not happening now.
Does Kg Pala really means a lot to Indian? Is this the so call Indian heritage?
Why can't Indian think outside the box and wake up?
Think of Hyderabad, think of Silicon Valley in India. Still don't get it?
