PUTRAJAYA, Aug 19 — Warning letters will be issued to teachers who stop teaching mathematics and science in English before the policy is officially scrapped.
Education Ministry Director-General Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom today issued the warning after learning some parents, especially those with children in urban schools, feared teachers were already not teaching the subjects in English.
The policy of teaching mathematics and science in English or PPSMI was reversed by the Cabinet on July 8, due to objections from various pressure groups who argued rural students could not cope and were being left behind.
However, a decision was made to gradually do away with the policy from 2012, to allow students who have started learning the subjects in English to finish in the same language.
“I don’t see how teachers can abandon teaching the subjects in English overnight because students are still using the current text books,” Alimuddin said.
He added it would take 18 months for new textbooks to be drafted, printed and sent to schools.
“In the meantime, I hope all teachers carry on as usual.”
Alimuddin added that principals at all schools will monitor teachers to ensure they follow the directives of the Ministry.
