SUNGAI SIPUT, Aug 24 — The will-she-won’t-she guess game over Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno’s appointment with the cane continues with the latest pronouncement that the reprieve she received earlier today would be valid only be for the Ramadan period.
Now, she will still have to take six lashes for drinking beer as the Pahang religious authorities now promise that the punishment will be meted out after the fasting month.
The 32-year-old mother of two was earlier taken in a van from her Sungai Siput hometown to the Kajang Women's Prison for the punishment but she was brought back within 30 minutes after the Prison Department said there was a breakdown in communication and the sentence could not be carried out.
Pahang's Religious Affairs, Dakwah, Unity and NGOs Exco chairman Datuk Mohd Sahfri Abdul Aziz said the state religious department enforcement officers had issued a warrant of arrest for her to be sent to the Kajang Prison for the whipping.
“At the same time, they received a letter from the Attorney-General’s Chambers advising them to release Kartika temporarily as it was not advisable for her to undergo the punishment during the fasting month,” he said in Kuantan.
“The sentence remains. She will be caned after the fasting month. She has been released but only temporarily,” he added.
Kartika had earlier refused to leave the van that took her home as she wanted to know if it was a temporary reprieve.
“I will not come out without a black-and-white document explaining the status of what has happened. I am surprised and speechless,” Kartika told reporters.
And her father said the change of mind would ridicule Islam, which bans Muslims from consuming alcohol, Reuters reported.
“The warrant cannot be executed," Sharafuddin Zainal Ariffin, head of enforcement for Pahang's Islamic Affairs Department, told reporters after Kartika Sari returned to her house.
Both Kartika, a Malaysian who has two children and who had worked as a nurse in Singapore, and her father had called for the sentence to be carried out quickly and in public.
“We had already accepted the punishment,” Shukarnor Mutalib, told reporters.

Great game played out by Kartika. By immediately accepting the sentence and not making any appeal as the authorities might have hoped as Minister Sharizat had pleaded, Kartika put the authorities on a spot. I don't think even lawyers would have given her this kind of advise. This woman is one heck of a strategist who probably better understood the psyche of the authorities than many of us do. Congrats Kartika. You did great making an ass of the law.

If they want to catch alcohol drinkers, go to the many pubs, clubs in KL alone. On some nights, you will even catch the future defenders of Islam (ala- the young princes & princesses).
Besides, there are other more pressing matters to fixed than to catch drinking Muslims. Like incest and rape. Smoking. Many of the Malays I know are social drinkers and social drinking is not too bad for their health. Smoking is. Go work with the Health Ministry and try to get smoking down first.

We must uphold the law irrespective the circumstances. The court must void the discrepancies and spank the lady. The court has already decided and the sentence must be carried out. If she wants to be spank in the public for all to see, so be it.
Why is the various religious bodies keeping so quiet? Now is the time for them to stand up and be counted, to uphold the Syariah Law. Walk the talk. Do something substantial instead of stealing dead bodies.

Aiya, what a pity that they did not carry on with the canning. I am not trying to be cynical. For one thing they will not hurt you badly for fear of international reprisals. Hi Kartika, look at the way they flip-flop. Great, as i have commented earlier, go and insist that the canning should be made public. You will generate a lot of publicity world-wide and then build a blog. A lot of people can help you do it free of charge. This is to snub our holier-than-thou religious zealots. At the same time you can be a famous blogger and you can earn a lot. Go and read some material on how to earn money from blogging. Meantime keep up some publicity and you can perhaps proceed with your blog and think aloud. Once the canning is done tell the world about it. I can say it is only the religious zealots in this country that is giving Islam a bad name. In Indonesia where the majority are Muslim they are very tolerant. I have read the Holy Quran a few times (yes at least 3 times - the whole translated book by Abdullah Yusuf Ali and it is an astonishing revealing religious book. Very illuminating, compassionate, non-violent (perhaps some suras have to be interpreted for at the time the Muslims were persecuted by the Pagans of Mecca), equality for men and women, honesty in doing business and of course the 5 pillars of Islam. I urged readers to go and get a translated Holy Quran and read it. It is perhaps the best book that i have read in my life. But in Malaysia sad to say Islam has been used the wrong way for political gains. Really sad....

This is exactly what happen when you have governing authority interfering with personal faith and belief. For UMNO, Katika's case is something that will boomerang back fiercely because normal citizens can now take pictures and videos of UMNO members consuming liquor and the religious authority will have no way to back out.

Corruption has left the Kingdom of Malaysia far behind Singapore, Taiwan, S.Korea and Hong Kong which once have about same GDP per capita of that of Malaysia during 1970s. This is inhumane. Kartika is going to have this hanging over her head for the whole of Ramadan and the Raya celebrations. The anticipation is probably worse than the physical pain itself. They should have waived it instead.

Poor lady. She lost her job as a nurse because these jack-in-the-box (or spring-from-the-bushes) spy and peeping tom with nothing better to do gave her 2 yrs of hell. She also has 2 children to take care of and one is autistic. She and her family has suffered financial losses, stress & public humiliation - all because of a glass or two of beer. Who has she harmed? She has the courage to ask to be caned in public. Do Umno or the religious bodies have the gumption to whip her without imagining what happens to her backside ( clothed or otherwise ) or her belief in Islam or her children's feelings. She is a mother, daughter, wife, a hospital worker for Allah's sake. She is me and she is you, a human being.
