UPDATED
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak has ordered the police to take swift action against a group that brought a cow's head to Shah Alam to protest a Hindu temple relocation in a bid to calm swirling racial tensions.
The outraged prime minister gave instructions to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan after Selangor police stood by in the after Friday prayers protest.
Umno Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin condemned the protest, calling it insensitive and disrespectful to another religion.
“This kind of emotional and insulting action can wreck the country’s peace,” the Rembau MP said in a statement.
“It saddens me that this protest was in the name of Malay NGOs after Friday prayers during Ramadan. I believe this is not an action acceptable to Islam which prizes moderation and respect for other people’s faiths,” he added.
Khairy said the action will anger the Hindus, adding those who organised the protest should consider their actions if others protested the building of mosques in non-Malay areas by burning and stepping on the Quran.
“Won’t the Malays be enraged. If yes, isn’t the cow head protest equally insulting?” he asked, adding he would equally defend Islam against its detractors and other religions too.
National Unity and Performance Management Minister Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon also called for calm and asked the state government resolve the issue.
“This matter must be resolved through negotiation in the spirit of Rukunegara and 1 Malaysia and an amicable solution must be found,” Koh said in a statement, adding he supported Najib's directive for quick police action. Indian leaders from both sides of the political divide condemned the protest, saying it will incite racial tensions in the country's most developed state.MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu called the group extremist but asked Indians in the state to be calm.
"It is the right of Malaysians of any faith, including Hindus to build temples and other places of worships. I am very sad that this group had paraded the cow's head on their way to the state secretariat building," he said in a statement.
"I am worried that this action may lead to retaliation from the Hindu community. However, I wish to urge the Hindus especially to be calm and let the authorities deal with it," he added, saying the protesters must be punished for endangering racial harmony.
The action drew the ire of other Indian leaders including Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy who called the protest a "disgraceful" act" while Human Rights Party leader P Uthayakumar was disappointed that the police did not arrest those involved in the protest.
The Pakatan Rakyat government said it will lodge a police report, regretting the inaction by the police.
The group of Malay-Muslim protesters claiming to be residents of Section 23 had dumped the severed cow's head outside the Selangor state secretariat and threatened bloodshed unless the state government stopped the construction of a Hindu Temple.
The "residents" said that the construction of a Hindu temple in a 90 per cent Malay- Muslim neighbourhood was insensitive because activities there would disrupt their lives.
“I challenge YB Khalid, YB Rodziah and Xavier Jeyakumar to go on with the temple construction. I guarantee bloodshed and racial tension will happen if this goes on, and the state will be held responsible,” shouted Ibrahim Haji Sabri amid strong chants of “Allahu Akbar!” as he referred to Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and his state administration.
Ibrahim identified himself as the deputy chairman of the Resident’s Committee against the building of the temple in S23 here, which is perceived by some as being a Muslim majority area.
He told the press that the state should move the temple to Section 22 as ‘originally planned’, and also labelled Khalid a “traitor to the Malay race and Islam”.It is understood that the protest is an immediate reaction towards the Selangor MB’s visit to the Hindu temple site yesterday, an act seen by the "residents" as disrespectful to the Muslims of the community.
When asked whether members of the protest were affiliated with any organisations or movements, Ibrahim claimed that the people present today were members of PAS, PKR as well as Umno who are “united in the name of Islam and the Malay spirit.”
The issue first cropped up when the Selangor government proposed that the Sri Mariamman temple be relocated from Section 19 to Section 23.
In a statement, the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism & Taoism (MCCBCHST) called for calm to enable the authorities find a “peaceable agreement and understanding”.
“Nothing can be gained by provocative action on the part of any side. MCCBCHST regrets that a severed cow’s head was brought along in the demonstration,” said president Reverend Dr Thomas Philips, noting the cow is sacred to the Hindu religion.
He said religious issues were best resolved around the negotiation table where mutual respect can be shown to all.
“No further demonstration by any side should be contemplated or allowed. Peace and order should be maintained for the sake of all residents,” Philips added.

Is this how Muslims behave as taught by Islam? Is this the peace loving, all compassionate, all forgiving and tolerant face of Islam as preached by Muslims of this country to the non Muslims? Is this Islam is all about? Will the real Muslims stand out and speak truthfully and fairly without fear or favour on such behaviour in the name of your religion.
I live in a non Muslim majority area and we have one of the biggest mosque in the area. Never once did anyone complain the sounds of prayers coming from the mosque 5 times daily disrupt our lives or impede us from performing our religious duties.
Now I think the ISA is useful.

This incident only brings disrepute to the great religion of Islam. I have many muslim friends and this is not what they potray of their religion. I have travelled around the world and there are many mosques built in non muslim majority habitated cities. There hasnt been any complaints from the non muslim population of these cities. Hope that BBC and CNN dont blow the news up and create a very very negative impression of Malaysia as what they did in the Kartika's canning case. PM Najib had to appeal to Kartika for her to appeal her case!!!!! BBC and CNN also advertises Malaysia as Truely Asia for the Malaysian Tourism Board. Imagine the perspective foreingners will have over Malaysia.
The protestors dont know the international implications. PM Najib is right in calling for stern action against these protestors.

Why arrest peaceful people with candle light vigils but let the violent racist protest with severed cow head. This is truly the time to put those bastards behind bar under ISA. Maybe they were incited by some fanatical islamic terrorist in their mix to protest that way. This is not the Malaysian way. I have not seen this kind of violent protest against another religion in Malaysia before this. We are truly a sinking ship if racial harmony did not improve.
It is time for the government to evaluate their actions in terms of bringing religion into government and inciting racial nonsense in their election campaign.
Other races have tolerated the call for prayer everyday throughout the land and no one make a fuss about it. Maybe these fanatics should get their head check and authorities should find out where they get their Islamic studies from.

Unless UMNO stops playing the racial card and transforms itself into the United Malaysians National Organisation and stops PAS's extreme elements in their tracks our future looks very bleak indeed. Caning Kartika will be a pivotal point in our history. The pseudo-demigods will congratulate themselves but this will be the beginning of the regression of what could have been a beautiful model for the rest of the world. Whether we like it or not, the underlying philosophy of life of the majority dictates the future of the nation and the underlying philosphy that we see is one that is governed not by inward purity of life but by an outward display of "holiness," an outdoing of outward "holiness" with PAS trying to be outwardly holier than UMNO and vice versa without any regard for love, compassion and mercy. They say Allah is compassionate, but where is their compassion? And it is the same with this protest. It is all about trying to be holier than thou, but all so externally.
Najib, step up to the plate and be a statesman of the calibre of Martin Luther King Jr. If you don't you may be the PM who sees Malaysia slide into chaos from which it may never recover.

it was at that time perhaps thought that pandering to the small but increasingly visible and vociferous groups of religious fanatics was child's play, and therefore, this was left to fester and it really grew to be so infectious and fundamentalist today that it has become almost impossible to control, let alone reduce.
and if pm is not really really firm about it, it could become a foregone conclusion that our cherished system could break down into something akin to taliban or alqaeda systems.
hope malaysians will realise that all religions teach their disciples not only discipline, but also tolerance towards other religions. because it is taught that in any particular religion, there is no god but the god as named in the religion.
on this basis alone, it is very clear that anyone from any religious denomination must accept and respect the beliefs of anyone from any other religious denomination. these, my fellow malaysians, constitute the sacred rules to accept before even attempting to talk about religion.

What have our Muslim brothers become? Is Islam so intolerant? We are always so proud of our multi racial, multi religious society, and our PM often boosts that our mosques, churches, temples co-exist side by side.
What has Malaysia become? Where are we heading to?

I had been to places where 95% are non-Muslim yet there is a surau with its speaker blaring loudly 5 times a day. Yet, the non-muslims took it in stride and being tolerant.
The sickening thing is that the police just stood by and watch. But they arrested harmless candle vigils and lawyers.

As for those peoples who claim to be muslim in the protest, it does not take a
rocket scientist to undestand that ISLAM does not permit deeds that
insult other religion. I had been to places in Malaysia that Surau/mosque
co-exist together in one area, no problem. Torelance is the key word.

Aren't we so creative at planting and seeding and propagating racial frictions and tensions ?
Truly remarkable orchestration. Beautiful show of perception management.
So now we wait for our political saviours to claim how only they can rescue us from butchering each other.

WHat a group of 50 men did does not reflect what the rest of the Malay community think. My Malay brothers are equally appalled of this group's actions...

The incident proved beyond any doubt that ALL IS NOT RIGHT IN THE NATION.
When the very people who claimed to be religious, pious and God-fearing, and in the name of the great religion Islam, did something so despicable and indignant, so callous and disrespectful, so racially and religiously provocative, so hatred inciting, so high-handed and challenging to all and sundry, so senseless and utterly unacceptable, so lowly and barbaric, so socially and politically abhorrent, so nerve wrecking and disturbing, so emotionally charged and inhumane by any standards, etc., etc., SOMETHING MUST BE DAMN WRONG WITH THAT GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS OR ORGANISERS.
For the police to stand by and just watched when such a mindless and threatening act was carried out showcased their indifference, injustice and prejudiced stand.
If any other groups were to have done anything similar, swift and stern police action would have been guaranteed. And the politicians from UMNO's and PAS's rank and file would have displayed outrage and condemnation of the highest orders! And demanded the perpetrators be dealt with severely and unforgivably.
The demonstrators ONLY displayed their small-mindedness and intolerance towards others who profess different faiths, in contrast to the magnanimity and understanding shown by Prophet Muhammad SAW.
Their barbaric and uncouth protest and demonstration in the holy month of Ramadan only proved their insincere and pretentious practice of Islam as a way of life.
They are a disgrace to Islam and Muslims who showed understanding and tolerance towards followers of various faiths.
What the episode showed is that there are still faults and shortcomings in the learning and practice of the religion among its followers.
Can any right thinking individual complain to the authorities that the greatly inconveniencing traffic congestions caused by haphazardly parked vehicles during Friday prayers near mosques, especially when they are situated in non-Muslim majority areas, and the accompanying loud broadcast of sermons and prayers, are a nuisance and disturbance to him/her? Will actions be taken? Will the complaints be entertained at all? Or would the complainants be censured or rebuked for making such a racially and religiously insensitive and inflammatory query?
The authorities and all right thinking Muslims must show their utmost disgust for such an unwarranted display of intolerance and despicable and provocative demonstration.
In the face of such uninhibited confrontation and inflammatory provocation, non-Muslims must show that they are beyond such immature and uncalled for tendencies. They must show restraint and patience as taught and promoted by their faiths. They must let good sense prevail and encourage that all problems be resolved through negotiation and discussion.

If they are sincere then the police should have done something before it gets out of hand. The home minister buat tak tahu, dumb deaf and blind. All the rhetoric from Najib should be followed by action. So far no one has been arrested and no one has been charged. We can't take any more bullshit from this government. We want concrete impartial action.

Since our Selangor OCPD needs to be given specific instructions for every move, then that confirms that all actions such as using riot squads to disperse during peaceful demos, no permit issue for opposition ceramahs, persecution of opposition party members, Teoh's demise etc comes from the outraged TOP.
After being puppets for so long, I guess present PM forgot to explain to the PDRM what do next. Might as well get mannequins or school kids with flags to stand by the road and wave. After all, pics at Shah Alam show kids tagging along to learn by example from elder muslims what Islam is all about in the the holy month of Ramaddan. Got something to do same time next year-ma.
For those who kept BN in power, what you see is what you get. Though we don't really know how a new govt will do in future, at least give them the opportunity to prove themselves. If they're just as money greedy, well at least we stopped Bn from having another term of wasting our money and we could vote another govt later.

It is very disappointing when UMNO leaders are unable to differentiate between right and wrong.

Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.
