Hand grenade may have been smuggled from neighbouring country

PETALING JAYA, Sept 9 – Police are investigating the possibility that the hand grenade seized from a condominium in Kota Damansara yesterday had been smuggled from a neighbouring country.

Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed said police were gathering information on how and why the hand grenade was smuggled in.

“We cannot discount the possibility that the suspect got the hand grenade from a neighbouring country as he often goes abroad.

“Our records show that the suspect does not have a criminal record except that he was involved in a fight,” he told Bernama here today.

The hand grenade was seized from the suspect’s home at D’shire Villa after his 61 year-old father reported that the suspect had threatened to kill him with a pistol.

However, police who went serching for the pistol did not find the firearm but instead found a hand grenade in the suspect’s bedroom.

Arjunaidi said the suspect had been remanded for six days from today to assist in the investigation.

The suspect’s father, a government retiree told police that his son was mentally ill.

“The suspect will be taken to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) for an examination soon,” he said. The case was investigated under Section 506 of Penal Code for threatening and Section 8 of Firearms Act 1960. – Bernama
