KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — PAS has proposed for a special parliamentary session to ask the government to explain its refusal to set up a Royal Commission to investigate the issue of the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ).
PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said the special session was necessary to enable the members of parliament (MPs) to debate the formation of the special task force announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak last Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters here today, he said the government must also prepare a report on the outcome of the investigations carried out by other bodies previously in the handling of the PKFZ case, such as the report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the task force, to be presented to Parliament for debate.
Mahfuz said PAS would ask its lawyers to scrutinise the provisions under existing laws to enable the commission to be set up.
The PKFZ aims to become a transhipment hub and was built on 405 hectares of land for the establishment of warehouses, office blocks and a four-star hotel.
However, it has been shrouded in controversy following the escalation in its construction cost from RM2.5 billion to RM4.6 billion. — Bernama
