KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 –Chinese Malaysians appear to have grown increasingly dismissive of the potentially party-shattering power struggle happening in MCA and that is a distressing sign for an organisation which is entrusted by the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition to help regain the trust and support of the community.
Some print and online news organisations are facing difficulty engaging readers in the battle between MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and his erstwhile deputy Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek and this appears to reflect the situation on the voting ground.
The largest Chinese language newspaper by circulation in Malaysia, Sin Chew Daily, recently ran a piece titled “Who cares about MCA’s party crisis?”, saying that while it is still talked about within the community, most do not care if MCA collapses.
One online news website has been reluctant to send its video crew to cover the Chua-Ong leadership tussle apparently because such videos “cannot sell”.
Sources in mainly Chinese language news website Merdeka Review say there is hardly any interest in MCA with the exception of the announcement on August 26 that Chua had been sacked, with most of the clicks going to other stories.
“Even the announcement of a minor press conference by Pakatan Rakyat was hotter news than Tan Chai Ho submitting his requisition for an EGM,” says the source.
Analysts say the lack of concern for MCA, a party that was part of the political alliance that won the country its independence, is not surprising due to the switch of ethnic Chinese support to Pakatan Rakyat.
MCA’s Insap think-tank deputy chairman, Rita Sim, says that according to her research, between 80 to 85 per cent of ethnic Chinese now support Pakatan Rakyat.
“The Chinese voters have not shifted back since last year and their position has hardened,” she tells The Malaysian Insider.
Merdeka Centre chief Ibrahim Suffian says that no matter the outcome of the power struggle, MCA will have a tough time reaching out to its traditional constituency.
“Over the last one year, the Chinese protest vote is slowly consolidating,” he says. “The EGM will allow the party to sort out its internal conflicts but will not help it attain the wider goal of winning votes.”
Sim says that the most important issue facing the party is not who becomes president or even if, as speculated, both Ong and Chua make way for fresh presidential elections, but how the party is going to regain Chinese votes.
She thinks that Umno is already starting to take matters into its own hands rather than involving its partners.
She points out Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s official visit to Batu Caves without MIC president Datuk Seri Samy Vellu and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s discussions with Chinese education group Dong Zong without involving MCA.
“Umno seems to be going directly to the Chinese community and it has to do that to get back the voters,” she says.
There have also been suggestions on the Internet by Umno sympathisers that the party has given up on its BN partners and set up its own Chinese and Indian affairs unit.
“I won’t be surprised if this happens,” says Ibrahim. “They might not want to wait for things to happen in the component parties.”
Sim, however, worries that should MCA collapse, the Chinese community would be in a “lose-lose” situation.
“I don’t think they favour Pakatan Rakyat so much as they see BN having a lot of credibility issues,” she says. “I think both sides have issues with talent shortage.”
Not many people from MCA have wanted to speculate on the outcome of the EGM on Oct 10 or its implications. Some have also said that “anything can happen” between now and then.
But whether Ong or Chua wins over the general assembly – MCA’s highest decision making body –the party looks set to remain in crisis where regaining Chinese votes is concerned.

It has practically no say in running the country and its leaders and postions in the Cabinet is dependent on the goodwill of Umno. It has lost all its creditibility in the eyes of the Chinese. Worst still the MCA leaders are percieved to be self serving rather than serving the interests of the Chinese community. MCA is percieved mostly to be blind, deaf and mute to wishes and problems of the Chinese community bcos it is seen as an impotent partner in BN and cant do anything about it and survives in the govt on the goodwill of Umno.
Does it matter to the Chinese if MCA no longer exist as it is percieved as not even a partner much less an equal partner in BN but as a lackey to Umno wishes. A paper kitten not even a paper tiger. It is not far fetched to extend this wouldnt be bothered attitude to BN as a whole as far as the Chinese commumity is concerned. That is why you see the Chinese community is voting for PAS when faced with a candidate from Umno but PAS must not take the Chinese community for granted esp with the kind of antics displayed by Hasan Ali and some section of PAS Youth wing. The Chinese community has had enough of being the bogeyman for what is wrong and ills our country and the failure of others

As for the percentage of Chinese supporting the Pakatan, my guess is somewhere around 90 to 95 percent. Only the party MCA party members and their family support them, and some unwillingly at that. MCA is pathetic really. It is fighting a losing war in gaining back the trust of the Chinese and it is facing internal crisis. My hunch is Ong Tee Kiat secretly does not mind at all losing the president of the party, it is a sinking ship after.
Ditto for MIC and UMNO. With people like Samy Vellu hanging around, how can the party endear itself to the Indian community. UMNO? Well....enough to say its digging its own grave every day. Why else would you think the rakyat is itching for the next general election?

The Chinese don't want MCA to "fight" for something that actually are entitled to them as a Malaysian who faithfully pay tax annually.
They want a real MCA leader who can actually tick off the "ketuanan".
But, for the current MCA leadership, their meaning of FIGHT means:
------to fight=to beg everything or request from UMNO
----- to fight= very brave in internal fighting, but very coward in facing external bully from UMNO

UMNO shouldn't even try to win over Chinese Malaysian voters because they have also seen how much worse UMNO leaders are than the MCA leaders. In fact UMNO shouldn't even try to win over any Malaysian because we have had enough of your double-talk, abuse of power and corrupt practices that has cost us and our children a better and brighter future.
It is time that we put an end to all race-based political parties, particularly those whose leaders have been self-serving. It is time to put an end to UMNO, MCA and MIC. Their leaders have plundered the nation for far too long at the expense of our children and our future.

Until and unless UMNO reforms itself ( a totally unrecognised UMNO from today, don't even hope to get chinese support. That change will have to included changes in governance and that is a very tall order which UMNO cannot achieve.
We are talking about freeingnthe institutions and we want to see it happned in front of our eyes.
Can UMNO return Malaysia to Malaysians? Can UMNO de-UMNOise the civil service. Can the police and MACC be truly fair? Can the Secretary Generals of the many ministries s be debrief so that they are Malaysians again instead of being malays or worse still, UMNO members?
Everything is wrong with governance in Malaysia and it is all the result of the UMNO-isation and Malay-isation of everything in Malaysia, no thanks to Mahatir and when Mukhriz was appointed as deputy minister, at least additional 30% of the Chinese fence sitters walk over to the Pakatan.
So, the more you try to play dirty by using the judiciary, the MACC n the police to victimize the Pakatan, the more we are with Pakatan. For example in Perak, after BN robbed Pakatan, there is no longer a chinese, including those who are members of BN component parties, who still support BN. They are either Pakatan supporters or fencesitters.
We are going for broke, we are with Pakatan now.

The current wave of conservative Muslims gaining momentum and umno's general bending down for them is a direct effect of the weakening of the non Malay support towards BN. To garner enough votes for the next elections, they either need to woo more conservative Muslims that make the bulk of the rural areas of Malaysia or get PAS or part of PAS to join them. In other words your actions indirectly screwed the more liberal Malaysians by pushing them back to a wall... which eventually in the future you your self will feel the heat. Ever notice that the past 3 months of hot topics are all related to the thing i just mention?
Now the irony is that voting for pakatan does not really help either, cause of PAS. They are a mistake of a political party being that the use of religion in politics should never had been allowed in the first place. Because at its core they are pretty much saying to the Malays this is gods party and umno is the devil, Which to some accounts is true yet, that notion should not be taken lightly as more often than not history has shown those who wielded with the word of god as his own, usually turn to be the devil him self... Personally, Politics should be secular, especially when running a country like this.
Suppose that Pakatan Wins how long do you think they will last when PAS starts to go on its version of The Islamic state? What then? PKR and DAP will kick them out? you cant do it with out losing a huge number of seats in parliament which i bet you will determined if BN or PR takes power.... PAS being the middle guy is very unlikely cause they know they wield some serious power with the kampung malays on their side.... will PKR bend down like what umno is doing now on the fear of losing that much addicted drug called power?
We are voting a more conservative country as a whole either way we go. So Tell me does it matter in the end? Cause atm no political party has actually clearly presented their opinion on the matter not even the rocket man. Which to me is more important that the issues stated above.
Corruption is impossible to wipe off so i kinda am very skeptical that PR can actually wipe corruption off the map of Malaysia it can be controlled but wiping it off is pretty much the same as trying to wipe all the lipas in the world, as corruption is the excess of democracy just that in most countries it is controlled to a degree.... where else here we went one step lower by having a state funded F1 team...
"Once you attempt legislation upon religious grounds, you open the way for every kind of intolerance and religious persecution". Took that from an Irish poet.

Their names etched proudly into the history book as the great statemen of the world and not traitors as the white labelled them at the time. If racial politics is allowed to continue the repercussions is unthinkable. Government shold be chosen based on who has the best policies to bring prosperity to all its citizens and the best use of the country's resources to create sustainable wealth for its future generation, and NOT ON POLICIES TO SCREW ITS OTHER CITIZENS AND KEEP THEM TAME. MCA still have a chance to regain the trust and RESPECT of the Chinese by reforming itself with the correct leadership. In this respect the coming EGM is crucial. The delegates essentially have to choose between OTK and CSL. It is left to the wisdom of delegates to choose a leader who can command respect not only by most men and women in MCA but also most men and women in the Malaysian society at large. Women constitute half of the electorate and if they do not respect this person it will be foolish for the delegates to choose such a person to be the leader of the party.

Yes, there are those who are pushing for the Islamization of the nation. And we have seen such people within UMNO, PAS and even PKR. And yes, I also have misgivings about a party (PAS) that is built based on religious affiliation. It is more likely than not, that there will be periods of struggle between the Erdogans and the "fundamentalists" within UMNO,PAS and PKR. And no doubt there will be contention with those who seek to turn this country into a one that is governed along religious lines. Even so, the Chinese electorate have given up on MCA and Gerakan. For now, they have thrown in their lot with those who will stand up against the UMNO-dominated BN. Life just ain't perfect and one often finds strange bedfellows in politics. Ultimately, it will be the Malay-Muslim majority though, that will largely decide whether we continue to be mired in the never-ending agony of the UMNO-type administration OR whether we will move on to a new administration with the attendant risks. Anyway, nothing ventured is nothing gained .... I for one, believe that is well worth the risks for the Chinese , to stand up and kick out the MCA now, notwithstanidng the Islamists in PAS and PKR.

The above observation by Malaysia First deserve attention. The realisation of one Bangsa Malaysia is at most, a lip service, at the moment. Until that noble goal is achieved, there is no escaping race-based thinking, aspirations and actions. Because the Chinese community is angry at MCA and it's political master, UMNO, they turned to PR. This is inevitable, and not because they love PR. It just happened that there are no other alternatives. Are they really comfortable with the current strong push towards Islamisation being orchestrated here and there, on and off?? Ultimately, the Chinese will still need MCA. the Indians, MIC, the Kadazans, PBS, etc., to represent them. IF ONLY the respective party leaders are genuine and steadfast in carrying out their tasks. With due respect to DAP and PKR, they are parties of the future, representing no one community, but rather multi-racial. But, noble as they may be, will they ever be successful in getting PAS to give up their politics based on religion and it's ultimate aim towards Islamisation of the nation, and to embrace one Bangsa Malaysia in the true spirit?
Let us not kid ourselves. How many didn't feel anything when incidents like the alcohol sales (Selangor), cow head (Selangor), demolition of pig slaughtering house (Kedah), etc., occurred?? And mind you, they happened in PR's turf.
Therefore, it will not be far-fetched to say that for at least the next 10-20 years, parties like MCA, MIC, PBS, etc., like PAS and UMNO, will be relevant to the respective communities. So, let's not be too hasty to condemn MCA into oblivion at the moment, but rather help and/or pressure MCA to reform itself. Better still, actively participate and make the necessary changes from within.

The veterans are still very much needed and should consolidate with the new breed of academically superior members. They should be proud and honoured to have the opportunity to nurture and train the future leaders and not clinging to whatever positions they see fit for their own selfish ends which ultimately cause the downfall of the party. To be able to come to term of IMPERMANENCE is the essence of the survival of the party as it will help to avoid internal bickering and jostling for positions in the party.
With the emergence of IT, CHANGE is the key word. BUT the educated ones who are quick to criticize whenever the chips are down are usually too busy to get involved or is it not COOL to be seen with MCA. Giving comments and being critical towards a singer is easy but have you ever tried rendering a song? It is blatantly untrue to say that MCA has done nothing for the Chinese community. Could anyone please list down what have the other political parties done for the Chinese community and the truth will be revealed. Of course MCA like other political parties has its short-comings which need to be addressed and the leaders must be sensitive and proactive to deal with them.
MCA is still a relevant component party in BN taking into consideration the political scenario and mentality of Malaysians today. Ought to be realistic. PR is no exception, their allies are also very much race based parties - PAS(Malay /Muslim) and DAP(Chinese). We cannot deny that the composition of Penang State PR Administration is the reflection of race-based concept so is Selangor and Kedah where the sole Chinese representative is appointed Exco. Imperatively the status quo of BN must be preserved. To survive, the main players of BN need to be overhauled, mindset to be changed, banish the corrupts and get rid of all racial and religious bigots. However, number equates strength. Thus, we need to address the questions I have posted earlier, as the opening statements. Stop the blaming game or the zero sum game. Be constructive and be part of the solution to the MCA’s dilemma. Together we should be able to build a better Malaysia for every Malaysian.
OTK belonging to the new generation leadership should be given the opportunity to lead the party as CSL’s misadventure has rendered him a liability not only to MCA but BN. I for one still care and this doesn’t mean that I am looking at the oppositions through my negative eyes.
