KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — When the provocative cow's head protest took place last month, the Council of Churches Malaysia (CCM) was among the first to issue a statement of condemnation.
When opposition aide Teoh Beng Hock died during a graft investigation in July, the CCM's youth section came out with a strongly-worded statement.
And when Perak descended into political chaos after the Barisan Nasional toppled the Pakatan Rakyat government in February, council members joined the chorus calling for fresh state elections.
These are not “Christian” issues, but the CCM — an organisation of the mainstream Protestant churches — considers them as issues of social responsibility.
It is not the only church body that has become socially conscious and vocal. The Catholic church has long been active in such issues.
“I think it augurs well for moral responsibility. This is a responsibility of our faith,” said Reverend Hermen Shastri, secretary-general of the CCM.
Christians make up about 9 per cent to 10 per cent of Malaysia's 27 million people.
Their active political voice adds a new dimension to a political landscape which already has many players. Political parties are the most active, but civil liberties groups and bloggers have emerged as another force.
However, until recently, non-Muslim religious groups have rarely been active in political activism other than a few Catholic churches.
“This will definitely have an impact on politics. We may describe the activism as activities by churches, but churches are made up of members, and voters,” said political analyst Khoo Kay Peng.
The church's political voice emerged just before the general election last year.
Shastri said it started with seminars for parishioners to discuss issues such as religious freedom.
“We felt then that Christians must be more aware, and must hold elected representatives accountable,” he said.
This culminated with an open letter by the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) ahead of the election, asking them to vote for candidates whose policies “reflect God's standard and Christian values”.
The CFM is the umbrella body of the Catholic church, the CCM and the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship, which groups the evangelical churches.
Churches also invited election candidates to address their members.
Reverend Sivin Kit, of the Bangsar Lutheran church, believes that the activism arose because the political atmosphere in the last few years had created unease.
He said it was triggered by the refusal of the civil courts to hear cases where the rights of non-Muslims were affected by Islamic law. This includes cases of deceased Muslim converts whose families were caught in a tussle with the Islamic authorities over funeral rights.
The civil courts, instead, sent these cases to the Syariah courts.
“That was the start,” said Sivin.
The government's initial response was unfavourable. Last year, the Home Ministry sent a warning to the Catholic church after its newsletter, the Herald, carried articles on current affairs and politics.
However, representatives from the government have since then participated in dialogues organised by the CCM. Shastri said representatives from the MCA had taken part. So have officials from the Election Commission, which also held voter registration in the churches.
The CCM Youth recently held a dialogue with Umno Youth. — Straits Times

without religious strife and contest
religion must not intrude into politics in whatever form
..and this includes Islam
we all wish to go to heaven
To talk social responsility and public interests in various shades and colors
is plain politics and will invite retribution of some kind
To lobby support in return for interest return is plain pork barrel politics
To be partisan whatever the viewpoints is equally wrong
The churches, mosques and temples must be kept away from political parties

the law did not created by judges. they merely implement the law by using thier best judgement based on facts and proofs.
the law was created by god and was pass down through the bible which is the basic principle of the civil or the common law practiced during the roman empire, the british empire and now in malaysia. since PAS learned that the civil law is based on the bible they felt that muslims should not be governed by christians indirectly or directly that is why they created syariah law to be equal to that of civil law also in terms of civil court and syariah court of today.
god is never pre-occupied with satan. it is satan who is pre-occupied with god and god's planned has never being failed by satan though satan tried very hard to meddle with it.
i wonder where did u get all this nonsense facts?
the church leaders are not politician or elected representative but they are the leader of the people who pactice its teachings and it is thier moral responsibility to lead his flocks to the way of righteous ness.
for example who single handedly help the fall of president marcos in manila? if not for cardinal sim the head of the catholic philipines church the poeple of philipines did not come our in millions to become human shield to defend the helkless freedom fighters who were unarm against the mighty philipines military under marcos.
u better get your facts straight before u make a fool out of your self and spreading baseless propaganda.

As such, keeping religion out of politics is therefore not practicable. In Malaysia, we see the Govt. is using Islam (the official religion of the country) in every facet of lives, sometimes even in encroaching into the rights of non-muslims, eg. the word 'Allah' issue, building of temples and churches. The govt also have so many different agencies like JAIS, JAKIM etc. to take care of the muslims. But What about the other faiths? The govt. should have a separate dept. to take care of the other minority faiths. Even having dialogues sessions with the Muslims are considered Haram and ended with protest from some Muslim groups. So how do we communicate, how to achieve the 1Malaysia?
Therefore, it is only fair that the other non-muslim religions like this Christian body now stand up to protect their rights as enshrined in the Constitution, before it is fully bull-dozed off bit by bit by the govt. in the name of Islamisation. Just because the BN govt is facing PAS, it has to show off it is also doing their best in the Islamisation process of this and that. In doing so, whether intentionally or unintensionally, the minorities' voices are then being neglected. This does not augur well for a multi religious, multi ethnic country like ours. It is better to sound out your grievances now than to wait until things exploded like a time bomb. It may not happen in our lifetime, but maybe in our children or children's children. Let's learn from the past history of the world.

where are u coming from?
what basis do u havr to say church is an intergral part of the problem? did the church expose the sex dvd of dr chua? did they decide to sell kg buah pala land at below market value? did the church decide to release money to pay for PKFZ? did the church involves in teoh beng hock death?
the never fight for ownself but for all.
the church believes in every man and woman are equal.
if u refer to the good or bad old days then judge them for what they did at that time and not drag the church of today. though it is still the same church but they are run by different human being exposed to different situation across time.
yes i agree the church of old did commit grave sins and commit mistakes but are we all human just like it and our faith need to be nurtured over time to see at the glimpse of the light? the light truth and peace.
live and let live. so lets move on and live. do our part do so little but a small step can go a long way.
furthermore the church has through its followers has open up activist to help the course of humanity like the red cross and st john's ambulance.
i presume u r a hindu and what does you and your fellow hindu got to show to play your part for the course of humanity? u only know how to administer caste system i belive? please excuse the expression.
we have to do our part if not who else? the aliens? by telling people off blindly without even knowing the real facts if like fools rush in.

i beg to differ.
human being is being formed both physically and spiritually. physicaly we cannot grow anymore but spiritually does not stop at anytime during our lifetime and it shall never stop growing even after we die.
for us to continue surviving in challenging times we must equip ourselves with great spiritual guidance. for christians in general the religion through its church is formed to fulfills this obligation.
whether we like it or not politics can determine the course of our lives. we can see this indifferent way of life experience by people of different countries which has different policies and ideology in running the respective countries?
ask yourself, which country do u prefer to live in? if u r chinese i am sure china is the last contry u want to live in though u r chinese and being chinese that is why your ancestors decided to flee from china and brought u up here. why? ask yourself. do u want to live in china and become chinese citizens?
why chinese are scattered around the world and the most race of people who does not want to choose to live in china. why chninese would rather die trying to flee china?
poitics affect our everyday live and we have to be ready for whatever course it takes us.
what best to guide us if we are lost in one of the p[olitical voyage? if not spiritual guidance.

Human conducts are government by law. What law, you might say. Well, in a democracy, we have a Constitution taht provide our legal framework and a Parliament who passes and updates law. But still, he who interprets the law says the law, giving meaning to law.
It is so important for a nation to have an independent and enlightened judiciary who will without fear or favor to politicians interprets human law for human flourishing, causes law reforms to keep up with moving times, applies proper legal principles for everyone to live in dignify human existence. This is in short the Rule of Law.
Judges are the most important counter balance against politicians who may enact law for their own ends. Judges must uphold the Rule of Law.
Sadly, he history of Malaysia is one where idiotic judges have destroyed the rule of law and we are in such a mess today. And God forbids, we now have religious groups imposing their meaning of law and interfere with the rule of law.

#1 The motive of the writer (Bolehmeh), who quoted the hymn “onward christian soldiers”, is unclear, but he/she would be well-advised against using that kind of phrase without a proper understanding of the biblical verses which this particular phrase is based [i.e. “Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs — he wants to please his commanding officer.” (2 Timothy 2:3-4)] The word “soldier” is used as an imagery that exhorted the readers to be disciplined and be undistracted as Jesus’ disciples! It is hoped that readers do not misconstrue that illustration.
#2 Writer (jijot ni) of following comments in Malaysian Insider does not speak for the church, even if he/she is a church member. He/she is not the voice of CFM, CCM or NECF, but a mere individual expressing his reckless statement concerning the caste system, Hindus and social action, which he/she tried to excuse him/herself which is really no excuse at all. His/her views are un-Malaysian.
Thank you.

Firstly, Protestant churches are not under the Pope, so please do not equate Catholicism with Protestantism. Secondly, CCM is not trying to bring the Church and State together -- most of its members are against the idea. What they are is just like any other NGO, like Sisters in Islam, all they do is that they find in their religious basis grounds to stand for values like love and justice.

The Bible speaks of God as a God of holiness and justice. The standard set by the God of the Bible for governance of a nation is righteousness and justice, which the Bible states as forming the very foundation of His throne. The rulers of a nation are accountable to Him for the way they govern the nation.
The church therefore cannot remain indifferent to issues of corruption, injustice, abuse of power, cruelty etc. Instead, the church has a duty to be the voice that speaks loud and clear on these issues and take pro-active measures to push the nation towards upholding these values. These are not just religious issues but issues that affect common mankind, whatever race and religion.

And yes, though only 10 % of the population, Christians in Malaysia are made up of people from East and West, be they Kadazans, Muruts, Iban, Chinese, Indians, Eurasians, or whatever...perhaps the best example of 1Malaysia.

my ancestors fled china due to economic reasons caused by bad government
although many people fled their home countries for religious or politcal reasons
many tamils and muslims fled sri lanka and kerala due to religous persecution
there is this chinese saying..better to live in the hills amongst tigers than live with bad govt
if you can remember the words of bernard shaw about faith and evidence and religion
if govt is run on 'evidence' which is what the rule of law is all about, faith need not come in
i concur with molineux on this fully..the rule of law
its important that there must be good govt, more than anything else

You might be right in saying "religion must not intrude into politics" but the church is not religion alone, (and most people who follow Christ would admit that being a Christian itself is not religion or a set of rituals but it's a relationship with God) the church is made up of people. People make up a nation...
So you certainly don't make a lot of sense when you say people who call themselves "the church" shouldn't intrude into politics or what I would rather term NATION BUILDING! The Bible does teach believers to lead, add value and bring positive change where ever we are, in whatever we do. Would you rather Christians (who make up 10% of people in Malaysia) stay out of making a change / difference and be apathetic, indifferent, probably NOT VOTE and just be stuck inside the four walls of a building offering prayers with NO ACTION?!
Well, even if you preferred that, sorry, we have been asked to play an active role, not a passive one.
Regards,
Jack Ling

But on the other hand religions are supposed to represent the people and as such have a role to play in a democracy. In the cases quoted comment by religious organisations is commendable
"The Catholic church has long been active in such issues." Its a great pity the major religion in this country is nowhere near as active as it could be

They are all about life after death. Funerals are the biggest and most important event of a religion. Are you going to heaven or hell or expecting re-births and what have you, after death? These questions are to be answered by religious beliefs.
Religions have used their unique poistion and status in society to mess up politics and bring about untold misery and deaths - These are historical statistics, an argument to recognise and reject religions' uncalled for intrusion into politics is not necessary.
What are law's concern? Law deals with what is legal and not legal, while you are on planet earth. If you die, law does not go after you, as far as law is concerned, it is over, no punishment on you is possible in hell or heaven.
So religion and law (read politics) operate on different planes. What is good and bad is entirely different from what is legal or illegal. Bringing God's teaching into law will get you into a big mess. You need to go no further than law professor Thio Li Ann see Wikipedia, messy messy messy morality argument, betraying clear thinking in legality expected of a legal scholar.
Please for heaven sake, may all religious people stay away from politics. When the Church stayed out ( was kept out rather) of politics, England became the most powerful nation on earth. The West as a whole has since tehn dominated us all on earth.

Religion is relationship between people and their God and should stay there no matter how challenging it has become at times. After all, in religions and in the respective God institutions, we should be promoting peace, love and respects for all. God must be tearing his hair every time one of his earthly representative promote hated and violence against His Children (Remember, we are all children of God) esp in his so called God House. In fact these acts are the greatest hypocrite and darkest sins people are always committing by dragging God's Institutions and His name down.
These Institutions must interact and collaborate with each other to work out their differences (most of the times, actually very small) rather than going after each other throat. They have the greatest responsibility to guide their flock of innocent sheep on the right path toward God.
M'sian and esp those so called leaders of these House of God .....just be "Respectful Thinking Persons" and learn to live with each other.
