KERTEH, Oct 3 — Three Indonesian workers were injured, one of them seriously, when the front portion of the roof of a mosque in Kampung Batu Putih near here collapsed today.
Marzuki Nordin, who suffered head injuries, was warded at the Dungun Hospital while Iswanda Othman and Saifuddin Abdullah were given outpatient treatment at the Kertih Clinic. The workers, who are in their 20s, are from Acheh.
They were removing the roof tiles when the incident occurred at 9am, Iswanda, who injured his right arm, told Bernama at the scene.
An eating shop assistant, Mohd Hafiz Kat Wiyah, 19, said he and two friends rushed to the mosque, some 50 metres opposite the shop, when they heard a loud bang. “I saw a worker lifting debris and a badly injured worker with head injuries vomiting blood.
“I rushed back to the shop to take a van and drove the three injured workers to the Kerteh Clinic. One of them was later transferred to the Dungun Hospital,” he said.
Kampung Batu Putih Security and Development Committee chairman Aziz Idris, 54, said the RM2.1 mosque was opened in November last year and villagers spotted gaps in the roof sheathing three months ago.
“Repair work started last month during Ramadan. A marriage was supposed to be solemnised at the mosque at noon today but had to be shifted to the Kampung Pengkalan Ranggon Mosque due to the repair work,” he added. — Bernama
