PORT DICKSON, Oct 5 — The Personal Data Protection Bill will be tabled in Parliament at the latest by December, said Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
He said the legislation aimed at protecting individuals and corporate entities would among others prevent abuse of financial information by irresponsble parties.
The Bill when passed would also see the setting of the Personal Data Commission, he told reporters after holding a meeting with bloggers at Hotel Thistle here today.
On his two-hour meeting with the bloggers, Rais, who is also the Member of Parliament for Jelebu, said it ended on the note that the role of the alternative media in the national agenda should be expanded.
He said the government recognised the role of the new media but wanted its players to respect the laws of the country and existing guideline in their writings.
Asked about accusations by PAS that the mainstream media was biased in its coverage in the Bagan Pinang by-election, Rais said this was not true and that he himself had given instructions to government broadcaster RTM to give appropriate coverage to the contesting candidates. — Bernama
