PETALING JAYA, Oct 10 — Former Umno president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted today that Barisan National (BN) is weak and Umno has failed the Malay community.
“Today Umno is weak, MCA is weak, Gerakan is weak, MIC is weak and because of that Barisan Nasional is weak. And when Barisan Nasional becomes weak, the Barisan Nasional government will be weak.
“A weak government will not be able to bring benefit to us,” he told party members at a function organized by Umno’s Petaling Jaya Selatan division.
Dr Mahathir asserted that Umno leaders were now preoccupied with personal interests instead of that of the community’s.
“This is the situation that we face today because we only emphasize personal interests rather the interest of race, religion and country.
“What we forget is that when our race is successful, a small group of us will also benefit. It is not possible for one race to be successful but their people not to get any benefits,” he said.
Dr Mahathir added that the people are no longer scared of Umno and BN.
“Back then when there was an election, our party will get two thirds of parliamentary seats and when we get two thirds majority, our strength is very strong so that we can if we wanted to amend the constitution.
“When we are strong, people will not dare to challenge us, people will not dare to make harsh statements that will raise tension among the different races,” he said.
The former prime minister pointed out that Malaysians no longer respected the government and had no fear of the law.
“Now it seems that nobody cares about the law because they assume that this is a weak government and the government cannot do anything.
“If they all break the law, what is the government going to do? And the government also knows that they cannot do anything. If they arrest anyone, tomorrow they will have to release them because of pressure,” he said.
Dr Mahathir also took the opportunity to lash out at his handpicked successor Tun Abdullah Badawi.
“Because he only prioritized himself, his family and he is involved in corruption so all of his family are involved in corruption. So today we can see that almost everything was destroyed when he became prime minister for five years,” he said.
Dr Mahathir said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak now has to compromise with the demands of different races because of the weak coalition he inherited from Abdullah.
“He is forced to entertain demands from other races. He now has to take from one race to give another race but this will not add support to the government.
“If we have to take what is rightful from one race to give to another race because we want to get support then we might get the support from this race but will certainly lose support from the other race,” he explained.
Tun Dr Mahathir also took a jab at Pakatan Rakyat and accused them of pretending to be “more liberal.”
“They encourage public discussion of sensitive issues which have caused tension among the races. The friendship and cooperation of the different races in the past no longer exists.
“Not only that but support for the ruling party which has been successful in developing the country has declined due to false accusations made by Pakatan Rakyat saying that we do not fight for the rights of our people,” he said.

Shame on you Tun.
We do not build a successful nation on fear.
That was the culture you left us = a arrogant BN/ UmNO and a country thats corrupt inefficient and lagging behind.
A united Malaysia and Peoples Power. Thats what we want.
We are patient. We are watching Perak and all your OMNO/BN antics. We can wait for GE13 to show you Peoples Power. Then you might begin to fear the Rayaat. Not that the raayat has been cowed and punished by the corrupted lots for 50 over years.
Enough is enough.

Only for the UMNOPutras! Like him!
That's why this bloke has always been harping on a strong UMNO/BN.
When he was the PM he has absolutely power.
And we all know too well what he did with it.
And we all know what sort of culture he had deeply ingrained in his ministers and underlings which lasted till today.
Everything, including the constitution was subverted towards giving him unlimited power and curtailing the ability of anybody to challenge him - even in court!
He and his cohorts are the bane of this country.
And they must be deposed of if we want a brighter future where there is equality among all citizens.
For far too long, he has forgotten that he, and all governments for that matter, was elected to carry out the wishes of the electorate and not to be their master!

This is probably good because BN was able to screw up the judiciary by simply amending the constitution because the rakyat gave them the 2/3 majority. Thak God that is no more!

Makes Malaysia sound like a regime huh. Which in reality certainly feels like it.
When you make statements like that, it shows desperation. UMNO, forget about the irrelevant components of BN, is feeling the heat. GE12 was such a tight slap so hard that UMNO is now sh*tting in their pants. Lost all sense of political direction. The chameleon is now showing its true colours.
UMNO wants to scare the Malays. Make them feel vulnerable and insecure. Paint non-Malays are enemy invaders.
I hope I live to see the day where "race" is never again mentioned by our leaders. Until that happens, don't call Malaysia an educated and developed nation.

Now he has finally admitted it. Leadership by Fear.... ISA, OSA, Sedition Act, May 13,, that's how he forced people to support him? Be very "fearful" Mahathir, your day of reckoning is not too far away.

When UMNO was strong from 1981 - 2004, how have they helped the Malays? The Malays are culturally appreciative and grateful people. UMNO leaders should know better why they are now abandoning the party. UMNO leaders remember their own race only when they are weak and lacking confidence to win elections. That is the hard truth. Mahathir is responsible for the state UMNO and BN is in today.

Mahathir, as an ex PM and parlimentarian, don't you even understand the meaning of "Rule Of Law" ? It means that even with a weak government, but with a strong and independent judiaciary, the Rule of LAW can and will be maintained. Who do you think wracked the independence of the Judiaciary which at one time had the balls even to declare UMNO an illegal party based on LAWs.It's because the independence of the Judiciary is wracked that people now are so brave to break Laws with a perceived notion that they can "buy" theiy way of of trouble especially if one is well connected.
Japan, Australia and many European countries have one time or another have weak governments, but just try breaking the Laws and see what happens.
Goodness Mahathir, when are you going to learn that Rule Of Law and Government are 2 very different functions of a democracy.

We just need a new CLEAN govt that will return the rightful power to the people, not like those being done by BN for the past 30 yrs.
We don't mind if PR is NEW & has no experience but we are happy to give them a try.

He gave our voice back, and therefore i am "grateful"....we need a strong opposition in Malaysia to provide check and balance to the Government, whats the point of having 2/3 majority if it would only breed corruption and misdeed among the ruling party....
the results of PRU12 is clear, Malaysians opted for changes...it wont happen overnight, but God's willing, it will....

Dr. M, it all started from YOU ! Have you not come to a realisation what you had done to this beloved country while you were controlling M'sia with iron fist in your 22 years as PM ? You still think all M'sians are so stupid ? We knew how you bailed out your sons' company during the financial crisis in the late 90's. You've NO PRINCIPLE at all !
Come on la, in your ripe old age, with whatever years left you have in this world, why don't you insaf ???? And you blamed your handpicked Tun Abdullah Badawi as the 5th PM of M'sia. Of course Tun Abdullah Badawi was a very weak PM & he "inherited" a weak economy after you spent all the money in your mega projects & some white elephant projects that do not benefit the rakyat but your family & cronies. At least to a certain extend TAB was like Mikhail Gorbachev who opened up more freedom of expression. Can you honestly say the same ? For once in your life, be truthfu to yourself la before you meet your maker !!!

These are the pressing problems our country are grappling with and TDM cant see why BN has lost so much support but has the thick skin to ignore that these problems that began during his PMship but he shifts the blame onto TAAB.
The rakyat are not blind to TDM's immense contribution in physically developing the country but we are also not blind at the high costs that we are still bearing for all these infrastructures by the way of tolls and taxes for many many years to come. Some of his mega projects are white elephants eg MSC/Cyberjaya, highly underutilised KLIA, Sepang Circuit, Putrajaya..... and those few who became very rich are those who got to do the privatised jobs.....We are also now aware of how he destroyed the cardinal rule of check and balance in the govt to get things done his way.
The state/culture of Umno today is also the result TDM's rule. Money politics, quota system and the culture of self serving interests of the Umno politicians to make big money for yourself and serving the ordinary malays an non Umno malays last. This is Malay elitism at its worst.
This is also true of other component parties of BN. The present weakness of MCA, MIC, Gerakan and PPP are in no small measure due to their marginalisation by UMNO. The non malays are not supporting these parties bcos they can see that these 4 parties have very little say in the running of the country and they are merely in BN to lend a legitimacy to BN as being multiracial but infact BN is actually the hegemony of Umno by Umno. PR promises real sharing and partnership in the administration of the country and this is the hope they give us and we want this hope to be realised and fulfilled in GE13.
Today voters are more educated and informed and cannot simply be convnced by sweet words and promises. We want an accountable ,transparent and a just and fair govt with a high std of governance and not some wishy washy politicians representing us be it the ruling or opposition parties. Unfortunately we still have many of these kind of politicians on both sides of the divide and hopefully by GE13 we get quality people/politicians running for office.

Yes yes, make Abdullah the scapegoat. Never mind that you are the very person who chose Abdullah as your successor. If it's anyone's fault, it's yours & yours alone.

So, wake up Tun! Dont preach the wrongs! Or maybe you are still living in the past!

You can pretend to criticize and pretend to be a good person as much as you like. It will not wash away all the detrimental things you inflicted on Malaysia.
There is no reason why a weak BN should be bad for the Malays.
While BN is incompetent, there are others who are honest and sincere in bringing the rule of law back to Malaysia.
For all it is worth, Malaysia would have been a lot better off if TDM has never been PM.
