KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 – Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak said tonight the party would try to set a three-year minimum experience serving as a committee member at divisional level as the precondition for those vying for the party's presidency.
The proposal will also apply for the supreme council posts and above, Najib said after chairing the party's highest level meeting at its headquarters here.
Najib disclosed that the proposal will be tabled at Umno's extraordinary general (EGM) meeting tomorrow morning, at which the party will seek to make constitutional amendments to remove nomination quotas for candidates seeking to contest top posts.
Although there is allegedly some opposition to the proposed amendments, the overall response from the delegates has been positive.
The Umno president said he is confident that the delegates will not see the condition set as problematic and claimed positive feedback from all three wings of the party.
"My hope is that the delegates accept the amendments tomorrow," said Najib when asked about his expectations from the EGM.
The constitutional amendments are intended to reform the party and curb graft as part of Umno's strategy to regain lost support.
