PUTRAJAYA, Oct 19 – Beating his anti-colonialism drum again, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (picture), today warned the Malays that they stood to be “conquered” anew by the Western powers if they blindly embraced globalisation and pushed for free trade agreements.
“We live in a Euro-centric world,” Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister said in his speech titled: “Strategic Positioning of Malays in the Borderless World” at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here this morning.
“Europeans are aggressive people; people who like war and who like to acquire what belongs to other people.
“When they suggest a borderless world, perhaps their intent is to conquer us by using economic force,” Dr Mahathir told an audience of 150 alumni from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) before launching their society website.
In his address lasting well over an hour, the man who drove a “Look East” campaign to counter the onslaught of Western culture pointed out that Malaysia, which had previously been subjugated by military might, now faced a new threat in the form of economic pressure and “values-systems”.
Dr Mahathir noted that free trade agreements (FTA) were among the new weapons used by the West to push for covert conquests.
The 84-year-old, who also controlled Malaysia’s purse-strings as finance minister in the latter half of his 22-year rule, reminded his audience how the country nearly became a victim of Western conquest through a deliberate weakening of its currency in the not-too-distant past.
“We must remember this process. People who are weak will lose their land. It may happen again,” he warned.
“In order to face this, we must understand the definition of a borderless world,” the former premier said.
“We don’t want a borderless world,” he stressed.
“They do not invent a policy for our benefit. Whatever the West invents is for them. That’s their intent,” he added.
He pointed to Singapore, a free port which is often held up as an economic role model for the rest of the region to follow.
But he stressed that Malaysia is not like Singapore, which does not have anything to lose in inking FTAs with the US.
“We in Malaysia will have to give up many things if we want to have FTA with America,” Dr Mahathir said, and added: “because Malaysia is multi-racial.”
He insisted that the federal government needs to keep its economic blocks in place “so that we are not controlled by foreigners”, and cautioned that when a country’s economy “is conquered, then politics will soon follow.”
The veteran politician claimed that countries in Central America which had turned into “banana republics” had lost their freedom to decide their heads of state as a result.
“They (the Western powers) will try to determine who is the nest head of government. The president is their choice. Claim that it happened in the banana republics in Central America.
In his younger days, Dr Mahathir had courted much controversy over his harsh criticism of the Malay race in his book, The Malay Dilemma.
“We have to admit the Malays in Malaysia are quite weak. Because of that, it is important to have a government that can protect the Malays,” he reminded his Malay-majority audience.
He warned that if two-thirds of Parliament were made up of people who are not sympathetic to the Malays, then Malay policies will be “threatened”, naming the government’s affirmative action policies like the New Economic Policy (NEP) and the Bumiputra-only admission into UiTM as examples.
Dr Mahathir said that without political clout, it would be impossible to come with a strategy to strengthen the position of Malays.
“Many people say the Malays are lazy,” he said, and recounted a personal story in which he failed to excite interest among Malays in the retail business sector.
He had created a scheme to get Malays to enter the field but observed that of the 3,000 who applied, only 300 turned up and 30 actually tried it out but only one could be considered a success.
He concluded that Malays disliked taking up retail “because it takes too long to become a billionaire.”
Despite his rant for Malays to reject the Western concept, Dr Mahathir said it should not be struck out roundly.
He noted that the FTA had its strengths and weaknesses and called on the Malays to “be wise to decide what to accept and what to reject”.
In his exchange with the floor later, Dr Mahahtir explained that the Malays were prone to act based on their emotions instead of being guided by rational thought.
He pointed out that the same was true of most Muslims, including the Arabs.
The answer, he said, was to first recognise the problem and understand what was at stake and then applying the mind to pick and choose the next course of action to follow.
“If we can overcome challenges, be it nafsu (referring to the Malay word for intense desire or lust) or the physical, then, we can be strong,” he marked.
“If we do not understand what is to come, then we cannot protect and empower ourselves,” he concluded.

whether we like it or not, we are living in a 'borderless' world. No matter how you reject it in your rhetoric, TDM, your own live is also very much dependent it. How hypocritical....

If the Malays cannot compete today and are overwhelmed by their siege mentality, they should thank Mahathir for this. That would surely be his most enduring legacy.

This TDM is shameless and no self dignity. Previously he used the Malay Dilemma to scare the Malays to vote for UMNO and he rose to power with it. Then many years later, he claimed that he was wrong about the Malay Dilemma and the Malays themselves were to be blamed for their own backwardness and weaknesses. Maybe this was to please the Chinese to slave even harder to finance his mega projects via taxes and under counter money. Now as a desperate old man out in the cold, he is trying to use this same scare tactic of losing Malay sovereignty to be the Old Hero again for the sake of his son. At his age he still worries about worldly matters when he should be preparing holiness to meet his God.
China closed its door to foreigners after the Opium War where she lost HK and Macau. For a long time, the Middle Kingdom once so mighty became so poor and backward because it stuck to outdated uncompetitive ideas. Today, within a short time frame of opening up, she will soon leapfrog Japan to be the world's second largest economy after USA. What TDM is implying to the world is that he has no confidence to face global competition. If so, then stop talking about new and globalised Malays. The mentality of Malays is at the stage that where Malaysia will soon lose out to Thailand and even Vietnam, having already lost to Singapore to the point of losing sight of. TDM will be dishonoured with the title The Father of Downfall to Malays and Malaysia.

It is only when these so called champions of the Malay race stop emasculating the Malays that progress can be made.
What is not stated is that their opinion applies only to other Malays but never to themselves. TDM is always strong and superior. Other Malays are weak and uncompetitive.
He may have a point there since he admits he is only a Malay by definition.
Are there really any parents who teach their children to avoid competition?

Countries like Japan and South Korea prospered because of tariff barriers. India is coming up due to its protected industries.
Being opposed to globalisation does not mean closing doors and sealing oneself off economically and socially, it simply means placing gates and fences around yourself and allowing trade in a managed manner, so that you protect your industries which need protection.
Many here see companies like Proton as "Malay companies" but totally open borders and unregulated trade will also result in many Chinese owned SMEs being swept away as many small shops have been put out of business by super stores.
So OK! If VW and other western-owned car companies are given unfettered rights to open up here, Malaysian-owned car companies will be swept under and yes, we may have lots of jobs but we will be working for foreign firms, much as we did during the British colonial era.
You can forget about entrepreneurship as they will have no chance of surviving.
That is the imperialist, neo-colonialist agenda of the wave of von Hayekist, Chicago School, neo-liberal propaganda which we have been subjected to since 1994 when the World Trade Organisation was formed.
Read Confessions of an Economic Hitman by Hohn Perkins.
Search for and watch videos by Adrian Salbuchi on You Tube.
Of course, if you are like the many neo-liberal infected Internet wallah who secretly hope that globalisation will wipe away the Barisan Nasional, wipe away affirmative action policies and so on, so that you can benefit economically, then I don't think you would care.
Let me get it straight. The current affirmative action policies based on race are unjust and should be changed to be an affirmative policy based on the need to protect and help people of lower income irrespective of race or religion, for whom the neo-liberal agenda of globalisation is very much their enemy.
Take a look at FTA Malaysia.org http://www.ftamalaysia.org
Theirs is the stand point from which my opposition to globalisation and free trade comes from.

Its sheer stupid and dumb to say Singapore can ink the FTAs and stand to loose nothing because Malaysia is multi-racial and Singapore isnt! if one can get hold of a Spore paper currency and or coin - there are four languages printed (English, Mandarin, tamil and Malay).
Hmmm what does that mean? I think those students of UITM apartheid university intelligence can be insulted time and time again by the likes of Dr M.

If you look at all his past policies, you can see his short sighted vision. He is now calling changes which are actual reversion of his past policies - like the reverting of Science and Maths in English, abolishing the quota system in Amno, Malay should study in institutions of multi-race, not appointing people of questionable character to high position, cronyism etc. Now he can see his flaws.
He keeps creating fear and sense of dependency in the mind of the malay so much so that they are made to be dependent on Armno. The Never Ending Policies were the drugs that weaken the malays mind and spirit. They kill their fighting spirit.
Globalisation will take those who are willing to take up the challenge to the next level. The chinese are gearing for it, you can see the Malaysian chinese competing in many fields world wide - in business, in singing competition, beauty contest, music, movies, lion dance and many others.
To run away from all these, is like putting the head in a hole. Sooner or later, you will have to lift your head up and face the world.
That Maha old man, hides in the hole and claimed that he is a Malay instead of Indian. And today, he dares not claim touch on his background but still hiding in the hole and has to claim that he is a Malay and needs those clucthes. When a man dares not reveal his own background, he lost himself. How sad.

If we are to be segregated in learning and education, then let's be segregated all the way.
Let's setup separate taxes for the respective races (the monies should not mix).
Lets setup separate governance for our races.
We already are separate and segregated in where we live. We also are segregated in where we work.
Let's just make it comprehensive and consistent.

to be a proud and successful race, tun must open the eyes of his own community to the importance of rejecting crutches, handouts and dole once and for all.
tun must be exemplary and insist on swallowing bitter medicine to kill the ailment. the old man may act and try to talk smart but in effect, he is only prolonging the suffering and decadence of his community which he claims to help, by denying the fact that they need to take bitter medicine.
please tun, wake up to this simple fact so that the malay community in malaysia can stand up proud and confident. a people that can take on the best in the world is truly something to be proud of instead of hiding under the skirt of crutches and handouts.

People, take note on what Charles M Moreira has said. It is the only comment that has substance. I wonder why the rest waste their time poking for nothing and wasting other readers time.
The liberalisation announced by the Government and the changes to the NEP is nothing more than a sweetener for the non-Malays. The fact is, I wonder if those who pushed for it know the implications. It can be outright detriment to our economy. It will kill the majority of the SME, regarless of those from Malays, Chinese or Indians. It can make our Ringgit worthless with hyper-inflation which means that those who are now billionaires could be pauper within a very short time. In short, we will all lost everything for nothing. So are the non-Malays that dumb, greedy and blinded by the FTA and financial liberalisation. You will die in no time as you have no chance at all.
There is an example that I would like to bring to light. The Australia-US free-trade agreement was tipped largely in Australia favor. Robert Zoellick, the current president of the World Bank, was a very tough US negotiator in the Australian deal. The Australian Government is prudent and responsible and it has good fundamentals in its financial system like ARPA and ASIC. However, the other part of the financial sector like the stockbrokers, financial traders and the fund managers have a completely free hand. Last year, in just a few months, Australia lost more than A$800 billion or 40% of value in the equity market, the ASX. It means that most superannuation, the retirement funds, lost more than 40% also. If the indiscriminate opening up of our financial market is the precondition for the FTA, it is an agreement that we do not need. Our EPF is doomed if our Government is stupid enough to take the bait.
Twenty years ago, Michael, an Australian said that the yanks got the coal and other resource for pittance. At that time, US has to set up shop and be there physically to plunder at the Australian resources. Now gloabalisation and the free-trade agreement is the name of the game. The new instruments is the financial market in Wall Street and the future market in Chicago. At the press of the button, Rio Tinto, BHP Billion or Anglo-American are manipulated for maximum profits. There is no effort involved in plundering the resources from Australia. The Australian politicians has duped the electorate that they have done a wonderful thing for Australia.
Malaysia have to look East again for our economic well-being. Recently, Japan, China and South Korea came together for a strategic economic partnership. Malaysia should get into the playfield. In the historic past, Malaysia always have a symbiotic and harmonious economic interactions with Japan and China. When Malaysia has a bit of economic hardship in 1974, I was guessing that China bought all the rubber even though China was dirt poor at the time. Around 1986, Japan gave Malaysia a loan at a very low interest rate of 4% when our country has a bit of cash flow problem. The emerging Asian economic block is the fair and square playfield. It is time to work on it then.
Globalisation, WTO and the free-trade agreements are just an economic myth. It will only suck you dry.

The government must be wise. to protect but must towards the benefit of the people and the future of the country.
A lot of country in the movement on anti FTA. The people must understand the in business, the big player(international) bully the small player(Malaysia's local industry).

Why not blame the real plunderers, who denied us "real" education etc.
written by Observer, October 20, 2009
If we open up to globalisation we will end swallowed up due to our own created stupidity from our education system and leaders. If we closed up, we cannot survive without foreign markets and our goods will be more expensive because of lack of economies of scale.
In order for Malaysia to regain competitiveness, grow economically and prosper again, the govt should go back to the old formula to let what each community excel best. Let the Chinese rev up the economy and finance, the Malays are good in administration and education, the Indians be doctors and scientists. All working together without envy and greed. Then there will be hope. Otherwise Malaysia will be dead meat in the near future with TDM's poison prescription which we swallowed for so many years. Back to Rahman's prescription of racial harmony and work division according to merit or we perish sooner or later.
We are between a rock and a hard place as far as globalisation is concerned. So TDM please give careful thought before open your mouth.
