Govt targets 1 doctor for every 600 Malaysians by 2020

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 – The government aims to achieve a ratio of one doctor to 600 people by 2020, from 1:1,145 currently, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Responding to a supplementary question by Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (PKR-Machang, Liow said the government was aware of the shortage of medical officers in the country and had taken various steps to address the problem.

"One of the problems is the outflow of trained doctors from the government service. Every year, between 200 and 400 doctors leave the government service to join private hospitals," he added.

He said the ministry was now looking into ways to pool the resources of doctors in the public and private sector to work as a team so that the people would get the best medical and health service. – Bernama
