Nuclear energy maybe in 2025, says minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 — The government was looking into the option to use nuclear to generate electricity by 2025 as a long-term solution to the country’s energy requirement, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui said based on preliminary findings, the country could not depend on its existing power resources namely gas, hydro and coal.

“We should not dismiss the possibility of using nuclear to generate electricity,” he said in reply to Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR-Lembah Pantai).

Chin said that for a start, the government would study the country’s capabilities and preparedness in implementing nuclear power generation programme.

“We are looking into various aspects in terms of the law, monitoring, human resources development and so on,” he said. — Bernama
