KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 - The government today proposed tax exemption for building owners who obtain the new Green Building Index (GBI) certificate.
When tabling Budget 2010 today in Parliament, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the tax exemption will be equivalent to the additional capital expenditure in obtaining the GBI certification, which was introduced last May.
Najib, who is also the finance minister, added that buyers of buildings with GBI certificates will also be exempted from stamp duty.
“This exemption is given to buyers who execute sales and purchase agreements from Oct 24, 2009, until Dec 31, 2014,” he said in Parliament today.
Najib also said that Putrajaya and Cyberjaya will be developed as pioneer townships in green technology.
He said that the Malaysia Energy Centre will be restructured as the National Green Technology Centre tasked with setting standards and promoting green technology.
He also announced the setting up of a RM1.5 billion fund to provide assistance to companies dealing with green technology.
“For suppliers, the maximum financing is RM50 million and for consumer companies, RM10 million,” said Najib.
“The government will bear 2 per cent of the total interest rate,” he added.
The government will also provide a guarantee of 60 per cent of the financing amount, with the remainder to come from banking institutions.
He said that the loan applications can be made through the National Green Technology Centre.
“This scheme will commence on Jan 1, 2010, and is expected to benefit 140 companies,” said Najib
