IPOH, Oct 23 – The Perak Pakatan Rakyat will be the first to kick off the alliance’s inaugural convention this Oct 31.
All three component parties in the newly formed coalition – DAP, PKR and PAS – will come together for a formal convention for the first time, to exchange ideas and come up with strategies to face the next general election.
PR heavyweights like the chief executives of three states, namely Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, will attend the function at the Syuen Hotel in Ipoh from 9.30am onwards.
Other state leaders like ousted Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as well as Mps and state assemblymen from across the country will also be in attendance.
Perak DAP secretary Nga Kor Ming said in a press conference today that the purpose of the convention was to strengthen the PR institution and spread the agenda of its struggles to the people.
“We will have at least 600 delegates in attendance, with each party sending 200 delegates each,” said Nga.
He added that the delegates would discuss a master plan and a manifesto for the Perak PR in facing the coming general election.
“This will strengthen the relationship amongst the three parties of the coalition,” he said.
He added that next to follow Perak’s convention would be the PR’s national convention, set to be held on Dec 13 in Kota Baru, Kelantan.
Perak PR convention organising chairman Dr Khairuddin Abd Malek said the three PR chief state executives would be attending the convention to impart their wisdom on their experiences in helming a state government.
“Lim will be sharing his experience instilling racial unity in Penang. Khalid, in the meantime, will speak on developing the state’s economy.
“Tok Guru (Nik Aziz) will be injecting spirit in the Perak admninistration and sharing his experiences on the trials and tribulations he had faced in leading the state for over 20 years without using the concept of federalism,” he said.
Nizar, in the meantime, will deliver the keynote address to kick off the convention.
Dr Khairuddin added that the delegates would later give their feedback and produce a resolution on the alliance’s master plan for the coming general election.
The convention in Perak is especially meaningful for the state’s PR delegates who, after a mere 10-month stint of holding on to government, suddenly found the state slipping back to the Barisan Nasional (BN).
The loss, which occurred in February this year, was the harbinger of a series of long-drawn political battles for the newborn PR government who, despite their countless losses, seem determined to continue their fight.
