Two bogus cops held for rape

PENANG, Oct 23 – Police arrested two men for impersonating police officers from the Penang police contingent headquarters and raping a teenager yesterday.

Penang police chief Datuk Ayub Yaakob said the duo were nabbed after the 19-year-old victim lodged a report, claiming that she was abducted and raped by the men who introduced themselves as police officers.

“In the 1am incident, the two men came to a hotel room rented by the girl and her 17-year-old boyfriend in Jalan Patani. Both men then introduced themselves as policemen and asked the girl, whom they said was wanted by the police, to follow them to the police headquarters,” he told reporters here today.

The victim, however, was taken to another hotel in Alor Setar and raped before being taken to Kuala Lumpur.

“When the suspects stopped the car at the Slim River rest and service area, the girl managed to escape and sought the help from members of the public to lodge a police report at the Slim River police station,” he said.

On learning of her escape and that the girl planned to lodge a police report against them, the suspects also went to the same police station where one of them lodged a report to deny the rape and alleged that the girl was paid for sexual services.

“The 36-year-old man was arrested immediately to facilitate investigations. The initial probe found that he had 13 previous criminal records, including car theft,” Ayub said.

He said the other suspect, upon realising his partner had been arrested, sped off in the car, but was nabbed here at about 3am today. – Bernama
