Unlucky weather for 13 cows

KUANTAN, Oct 28 – Thirteen cows died after being struck by lightning last night at Kampung Sepat, here.

The owner of the herd, Mat Salleh Awang, 58, said the incident was believed to have occurred between 8 pm and midnight during heavy rain and a thunder storm.

He said that usually his herd of about 50 animals, including goats and buffaloes, would return to the shed in the evening but the 13 cows were not in the herd.

“I did not suspect anything wrong until I was told by a friend at 8 this morning of the discovery of the carcasses of all the cows in a plantation about 1.5 kilometres from my house,” he said when met here.

Upon arrival at the scene, he found burn marks on several parts of the body of all the dead cattle.

Mat Salleh said he later contacted the Veterinary Department which confirmed that the animals had been killed by lightning. He estimated his losses to be about RM7,000. – Bernama
