KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 – Is nothing sacred anymore? Apparently not, if the handicapped can be singled out as a target for robbery.
On the pretext of making a donation, two men robbed a non-governmental organisation (NGO) for the disabled in Taman Garing, Rawang, near here, of cash and valuables worth about RM20,000 today.
There were 12 disabled people at the Independent Living and Training Centre when the robbery occurred about 10am.
The NGO’s secretary, Gurdip Kaur, said that earlier, when the men arrived at the centre, they claimed they wanted to contribute to the organisation.
“I was happy and asked them to return in the afternoon to meet the centre’s president. They left but returned in 20 minutes, with packets of roti canai, bread and cartons of drinks. After putting the stuff down, they ordered me to hand over all valuables,” she told reporters when met at the centre.
Gurdip said she almost fainted when the suspect placed a parang at her neck and punched her several times.
She said, besides escaping with RM10,000, the robbers also took away her handbag, laptop, two mobile phones and jewellery. She said the money was collected through donations and a charity concert to fund the construction of a new building for the NGO next year. – Bernama
