Three students swept away in stream, feared drowned

UPDATE 1

KAMPAR, NOV 1 — Three students from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) are missing and believed to have drowned after strong currents at the Batu Berangkai picnic spot swept the trio away earlier this evening.

The incident was reported to the police by a fourth member of the group, who had not joined the trio in the nearby stream.

According to the boy, the three were taking a swim in the stream when a violent wave carried them off.

Search and rescue efforts were initiated after the local authorities were informed of the incident.

A police spokesman said that it was raining heavily when the incident occurred, causing strong flows in the stream.

Local officials have named the three as 20-year-old Penangites James Wan Kai Khor and Yew Ghin Chnieh, while the third was 19-year-old Yew Shy Gin, a Kedahan.

This incident comes on the back of a similar mishap in nearby Kuala Dipang on Monday, where 22 primary school students fell into a river after a suspension bridge collapsed.

All 22 went missing and were initially feared drowned, before rescuers managed to save 18 of them. Three pupils drowned.
