KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — Newly demoted former MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai is pressing ahead for fresh party polls despite the severe setbacks to his faction today.
Four central committee members appointed by Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat but aligned to Liow were sacked this morning and the central committee also voted to reinstate Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek as deputy president following a declaration from the Registrar of Societies (RoS) that Dr Chua was the rightful deputy.
One of the requisitionists for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to propose fresh elections, Wong Nai Chee said that he would discuss the EGM resolutions with the secretary general and the newly appointed legal bureau chief following claims made by Ong that the resolutions were unconstitutional.
“In light of recent developments it looks like there are two deputy presidents,” said Wong, referring to Liow’s intention to dispute the validity of Dr Chua’s reinstatement.
“This confirms the necessity of fresh elections. We believe it is best for delegates to determine the future of the party instead of the current fiasco.”
Wong and two others had requisitioned for an EGM last Thursday and the party secretary general has five days to send out a notice, failing which Wong claimed he would be empowered to do so.
According to Wong, the five day deadline expires today as it includes weekends.
Wong maintained that the requisition is still valid despite four of the signatories having been sacked this morning by Ong.
Ong and Dr Chua are cooperating on a unity plan and are not in favour of an EGM for fresh polls.
