KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 — MCA secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng has swiftly cemented the party’s reunited leadership by today rejecting to hold another delegates’ meeting seeking fresh elections, calling it unconstitutional.
His decision is another blow to Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai’s camp after the vice-president lost the MCA deputy presidency, which he held for two weeks. Liow had previously replaced Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek, who has since been reinstated to the post and has now made up with party chief Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.
Wong Nai Chee — one of 16 central committee members who requested for the EGM — told reporters today he had met the MCA secretary-general, who objected to the proposed resolution calling for an election.
Wong said that he and his fellow requisitionists will now discuss among themselves the next course of action.
He said that no decision has been made on whether to issue their own notice of an EGM if the secretary-general fails to issue a notice as required by the constitution.
“There is nowhere in the 170 articles of the MCA constitution that prohibits fresh elections,” claimed Wong. “This looks like a legal issue now.”
The 16 members of the central committee that were aligned to Liow had petitioned for an EGM for fresh polls last Thursday, saying that it was the best way to solve the leadership “impasse”.
Ong and his newly-reinstated deputy Dr Chua are not in favour of such an EGM as they are cooperating on a power-sharing agreement, in a bid to unite the party.
Four of the 16 requisitionists were removed from the central committee by Ong yesterday and replaced with three men seen to be aligned with Dr Chua — including the latter’s son, Chua Tee Yong who is also Labis MP.
