MCA disciplinary board cites ‘professional reasons’ for quitting

JOHOR BARU, Nov 7 – The decision by the MCA’s disciplinary board to resign en bloc has nothing to do with politics. Rather, it was a decision made solely on a professional point of view.

Five days ago, the five-man commmitte headed by lawyer Datuk Ng Cheng Kiat submitted its letter of resignation to party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

“We took the collective decision to resign, not because we want to play politics in the current situation affecting the party.

“Let it be clear that we are not taking sides and favouring any personality within the party.

“But it’s a question of our professional pride and integrity,” said a member of the board.

At the heart of the issue is the decision taken by the board last month to sack deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek from the party for his involvement in the sex video scandal.

Subsequently, the party’s presidential council endorsed the decision, only to see it overturned by the central committee which decided to suspend Dr Chua for four years.

Currently, Dr Chua has been reinstated party deputy president, following a ruling by the Registrar of Societies.

“We were not happy with the decision taken by the central committee (CC) because none of us were consulted at all.

“Of course, the CC, as the highest authority in the party, has the right. At least, our side of the story must be heard.

“Also, the CC owes us an explanation as to why they arrived at such a decision (to suspend Dr Chua for four years). But no, we were not given one, nor were we consulted even though we had two of our members on standby at the central committee meeting.

“Our professional pride and integrity are being questioned. So, it’s obvious we cannot function under such a situation and therefore, it’s best we resign,” added the source. – Bernama
