Ministry ready to aid Penang’s engineer shortage

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — The federal government will work with the Penang government to identify a ready pool of engineers who can be sourced by potential investors, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said today.

There were 18,000 engineers comprising fresh graduates and those looking for better positions registered with the ministry.

However, investors wanted experienced and competent engineers, especially those with specific expertise and registered with certain boards, he said when commenting on a news report that Penang had to forgo a RM10 billion investment due to the lack of experienced electrical and electronic engineers.

“So, the possibility is that they may be short of that kind of engineers but in terms of the number of engineers coming out from the universities and colleges, I think there are a lot,” he told reporters at Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s Deepavali open house here.

Subramaniam said he had already met and discussed the issue with Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng.

“He (Lim) said that he had tried (to source the engineers) and he was informed that he cannot get the numbers as what the investors wanted,” said the minister. — Bernama
