KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 – The future has just grown murkier for the country’s only Catholic newspaper, which is locked in a lawsuit against the Home Minister over the right to publish the word “Allah” to mean God for Christians.
The Malaysian Insider was told that The Herald’s publishing permit for next year was retracted recently.
The weekly’s priest-editor, Reverend Father Lawrence Andrew, explained that the Catholic Church which publishes the multi-lingual weekly, had first applied for the annual licence in late July.
The Home Ministry had replied on Aug 5 and approved their application to publish in four languages: Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin and Tamil, but rejected their request to add a new language, Kadazandusun.
The church received a second letter from the Home Ministry on Sept 3, which promptly retracted the approval given a month earlier even though the RM800 publishing fee had been paid up.
No reason was given for the rejection, Andrew said.
Instead, the Home Ministry ordered the church to disclose its bank accounts and send in the latest statement, which Andrew found odd.
“They are a licensing body for permits, not a commercial body,” he said.
The priest also said they were forced to put in a letter asking for a refund on the RM800 payment, which he also found strange.
He noted that the ministry should have returned the money automatically, and added that he would not follow the directive as it may indicate that the church agreed with the rejection.
Andrew said the church has enlisted the aide of Datuk Michael Chong, a special officer to the Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and a church-going Catholic, to clear the confusing chain of events.
Chong responded promptly and told him the deputy home minister had “overturned” the decision to reject the church’s permit.
But there has been no breakthrough since then. Their last communication was yesterday, through an SMS exchange.
“We’re in limbo right now,” Andrew said.

Seems like the internet is the only place for that. I commend AgreeToDisagree for his choice to share his opinions here, even daring to take the risk of displaying his blatant ignorance and illogical mind. Apart from the inability to consider the influence of demographics in different countries and the reality of Christianity in the west (probably doesn't even know anything about Orthodox church he cited), it looks like he took some of those statements out of a centuries old political rally. Reminds me of UMNO. But I really commend him! If BN/UMNO can do that, so can we! Something Malaysia needs to see more in the open.
Sadly, our government is still trying to suppress that.

Where are all the non-Muslim politicians, too scare to speak up?

we already knew, it is by His Wisdom we know the truth, it is by His Holy Spirit we are called by His Children and we call Him as Our Father. We are trained to be like Lord Jesus. How bless we are if compare to them (Muslim or Pagan people). Muslim don't allow to call Allah as "Our Father" but they called themselves as "Hamba Allah". How special we are if compare to them. The fact is that everyone will die one day, and they (Muslim) also will die too. Let we combine our prayers in Jesus name to pray for this kinda people. No power has strong in the world than a little prayer with humble heart. Like Jesus, we must always remember, that the world is not belong to us because the world is not recognise us.

By the rash decision the Home Minister has dented the 1Malaysia Policy that PM Nazib announced not so long ago. Such policy merely aggravates the already polarised environment in the country.
The PM has recently appealed to the nation to ignore the racist remarks and anti-religious comments and actions made and fomented by some bigots in the country. And, I urge our PM to seriously look into the Home Ministry set up and see if those in office are really fit to be serving there. In my view, they are jnust square pegs in round holes.
The level of inter-religious tolerance appears to be one-sided. It appears that non-muslims are much more tolerant than their muslim counterparts where it comes to inter-reicious dialogue, discourse and hermeneutics.
If the muslims so claim that they are decendents of Abraham, then they must be prepared to follow and accept the teaching of the Old Testament. I just wish to remind my muslim brothers and sisters that God, The Almighty, answered Moses that His name is, "I am that I am". He has never been known as Allah in Torah. "Allah" is the name coined and assigned very much later by men to represent the Almighty God.
The fundamental objective of any religion is to learn and obey its teachings and worship God so that one may establish a personal relationship with Him and become a better human being so that He may look with favour to admit him into His Heavenly Kingdom whereto He recalls His mortals.
Even though the Christians have been done in by prematurely removing their rights to publish the Herald, we will continue to pray for prudence and guidance that one day He will restore them their inherent right to resume the Herald.
While the case is pending in the High Court, I reckon that the action by the Home Ministry was premature and subjudice and it has the effect of undermining and usurping the role of the Judiciary.
May God, The Almighty, continue to forgive and bless those who know not what they do.

What a stupid logic those blokeheads have? Are they so called championing for Islam? Is that what Islam calls for, to get rid of the other religions? Why the other Arab muslim countries have no problem with this 'Allah" issue but only Malaysia. Is Malaysian muslims more knowledgeable and holy than their Arab breathrens?
If Malaysia does not have diplomatic relations with the Vatican, why in the first place Tun Mahathir went to visit the late Pope John Paul II?

Actually we should feel sad for Home Minister and in fact forgive him for he know not what he does (literally). I think by stopping a christian publication or two will not stop the Gospel from being spread.
If one could show forgiveness, love and compassion for those who have wronged you - Gospel has been shared by those actions itself, yes?
Having said that, easy to say, hard to do, including me, but I believe it is something we as sons and daugthers should learn to be like.
