KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 – MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said he had called for another extraordinary general meeting (EGM) with the aim of restoring the party’s credibility and dignity, and not to seek a higher post.
He said the proposed EGM was to ensure that the MCA would continue to get the support of the Chinese community and the public.
“I would like to reiterate that I’m not going for any of the posts. Position is not important to me,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby, here today.
Liow was commenting on MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek’s remarks that he (Liow) should state clearly whether he wanted to be the president or deputy president and that he (Chua) was willing to vacate the deputy president’s post for him.
Liow, who is also the Health Minister, said he wanted the MCA to practise democracy with the leaders respecting the party’s constitution.
He said the second EGM called for on Nov 28 was valid as it adhered to Article 27 of the party’s constitution which stated that an EGM could be convened to discuss party problems.
“We hope certain quarters will respect the rights of the delegates to hold the EGM. The others should not worry whether the EGM is valid or not as the EGM is valid according to the constitution, and the delegates have every right to attend it and voice their opinion,” he said.
He said nobody had the right to stop the EGM, which would dabble on two resolutions – to seek a mandate to hold fresh party elections, and to revoke the appointment and dismissal of Central Committee members or any promise made by the president.
Meanwhile, MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong warned against creating fear to deter the delegates from attending the EGM.
“If they claim there is no point in attending the EGM as it is not valid, it only shows that they are not brave enough to face the delegates.
“We would like to remind the president that nobody has the power over the EGM, which has fulfilled the conditions under clauses 30.1, 30.2 and 30.3,” he said. – Bernama
