By Shazwan Mustafa KamalPUTRAJAYA, Nov 12 — Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said today he is satisfied with the way Malaysia has been handling the treatment of Indonesian workers here.
"Based on the evaluations on the treatment of the Indonesian workforce every year, I have seen significant progress compared to the past," said Yudhoyono.
He said that minor problems will occur between the two countries every now and then, but added that the two countries' deep friendship should not be affected by one or two issues.
"Malaysia is the closest friend to Indonesia. Both countries have a deeply-rooted similar cultural history that has to be preserved with the utmost care."
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak echoed Yudhoyono's stand on the matter, and gave an assurance that the rights of Indonesian workers will be protected.
"As far as we (Malaysia) are concerned, we appreciate the presence of foreign workers from Indonesia, and will continue to protect their interests. If they are legal workers, then their rights can readily be taken care of.
"Fairness and justice will be accorded to everyone. Everyone is answerable for their actions, including Malaysians who have mistreated Indonesian workers, and action will be taken according to the laws of the country. I believe this has already been proven," said Najib.
The prime minister also said “the two governments will strive to increase bilateral ties and preserve this relationship at the best possible level.”
Najib also agreed with Yudhoyono that the youth hold the key to a nation’s progress and growth, and that they need to be given special emphasis.
“I am also confident that our trade ties will increase and more Indonesians will invest in Malaysia,” said Najib.
Among the areas that will be explored by both nations are food security as well as energy security.
Najib also suggested channelling some of Malaysia’s energy resources to the more rural areas in Indonesia.
Besides continuing to fight against anti-palm oil lobbying, Indonesia and Malaysia will also look into the promotion of halal food and Islamic finance.
Najib concluded the press conference by saying more opportunities need to be created in every field and “friends need to be made on both sides.”
Yudhoyono ended his speech with a similar outlook.
