Anwar to know on Nov 25 if he gets RM100m

By Debra Chong

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 — The High Court will decide on Nov 25 in Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's RM100 million defamation suit against the New Straits Times (NST) for insinuating he was an “American agent”.

The Opposition Leader claimed that the English-language daily had tarnished his reputation in an uncredited article on March 2, 2002 headlined “Anwar’s link to US lobbyist”.

Former NST deputy group editor, Rose Ismail (pic), denied Anwar’s claims that she had ulterior motives and deliberately damaged his public image.

Rose admitted in the High Court yesterday to being the writer of the article.

She said the NST article was a follow-up to the current news after Anwar’s sacking from the government, which she believed interested the public.

The 54-year-old media consultant said she based her article on a report published by an American magazine called “New Republic” which ran a story linking Anwar to the lobbyist earlier.
