KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 — MCA Youth chief Datuk Wee Ka Siong said today the proposed extraordinary general meeting (EGM) may be scrapped if there is a general consensus for fresh polls in the party.
He explained that the he was willing to accept fresh elections if it allows the delegates to give a new mandate to the party leadership.
“Let the delegates decide on Nov 28 if they want fresh polls. The EGM might be cancelled if they will set a date and everyone agrees to a fresh poll. I don’t see any problem if everybody agrees. If not we are forced to find a mandate through an EGM,” he said.
Wee also slammed MCA’s top two leaders, president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and his deputy Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, for claiming that that the resolutions of the EGM were unconstitutional.
“I would like to remind everybody that if we consider the delegates as one supreme body of authority to determine the direction of the party, then whatever problems that the party faces could be discussed and the delegates can determine the fate of the party.
“I believe based on this principle, I can’t see how the resolutions are unconstitutional,” he said.
He added that his camp had consulted more than six lawyers and each had given a positive response on the EGM.
Dr Chua yesterday acknowledged the rights of members to hold the EGM but any resolutions which are against the party constitution cannot be implemented.
“Based on their arguments that the resolutions can be allowed but cannot be implemented when we cannot implement the Oct 10 (decision), does it imply that it was not legitimate?
“If we knew that the Oct 10 resolution cannot be used, then why did we give a vote of no confidence to the president? That is not an impeachment because that was the reason given why it could not be implemented since it was an impeachment,” Wee argued.
He said all parties should respect what was decided at the Oct 10 EGM.
“If we consider our delegates as mature then I do not see any problem when we discuss as a party. We must be rational and not make many assumptions that the EGM will bring disunity.
“What happened after Oct 10? I think it was the maturity of the delegates that we respect. Let the delegates decide. Call everyone to attend and they disagree then we can reject the resolution,” he said.
Dr Chua also stated yesterday that the grassroots wanted a new mechanism to select leaders, saying that MCA may adopt Umno’s methods in selecting its central leadership.
He said such a move requires an amendment to MCA’s constitution and for this to take place, the party needs stability.
However, Wee accused Dr Chua of using the constitutional amendment as an excuse to not hold the EGM.
“I want to say here that direct election for the president is actually in the president's manifesto. I still remember in many presidential council meetings that we have discussed and at that time it decided that we needed more time and it should not rushed. I am surprised when it was suggested but to have presidential elections, there are many ways and methods while what the president proposed in his manifesto was that every member has the right to vote.
“But what I read in yesterday’s paper was it that it resembles Umno’s. That is also subject to argument because many will give their opinion. I feel there is a need for a process of discussion to find an agreement but it does not have to do anything with the EGM,” he explained.

Honestly, I don't get what you are trying to tell us (the chinese community) but what I do know is that stabbing someone from the backside is not acceptable. Just admit you are hoping for a higher position and you have interest in PKFZ. I am getting very upset at the whole things. Just accept GUP and start working on our community. You are an oppotunist WEE!
