KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 — The government plans to turn Felda into the national food warehouse in 10 years with the first phase to begin next year.
In the first phase, Felda will focus on planting chillies and bananas, rear cattle and aquaculture while in the second phase, from 2015 to 2019, it will concentrate on strengthening the domestic market and penetrating the export market by transforming the country into a global manufacturer.
The government will be implementing the contract farming concept for the national food warehouse with an initial capital of RM750 million.
“The initial capital issued by Felda will be recovered when deductions are made from the revenue, and surplus revenue be returned to the farm operators,” Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Ahmad Maslan told reporters in Parliament.
He said Felda has now only capable of producing 53 per cent of the domestic demand for chillies, bananas and cattle.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had announced that 318 Felda settlements nationwide would be made into the country's food warehouse in July.
