KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 — I am one of the privileged few to have attended a local public university and learned the meaning of hate, thanks to the ever popular Biro Tata Negara.
All undergraduates were forced to attend this programme or else they would not be eligible for graduation.
The BTN under the Prime Minister’s Department brought in “intellectual” speakers who were supposed to enlighten the students about the meaning of being a Malaysian but instead it felt more like a communist propaganda camp brainwashing those attending about the importance of “Ketuanan Melayu”.
The camp would usually take place during the weekends. Students would have to register early in the morning and the programme would last the whole day.
The organisers were always on their guard, asking participants to show their student identification cards each time they entered the hall, fearing the presence of outsiders.
In the hall, students were asked to turn off their mobile phones.
During the lectures, questions were planted among the audience and the students were advised not to ask any other questions.
One speaker began with the history of Malaysia and how much the country had gone through, always emphasising the May 13 riots.
He stressed the point of how much the Malays had sacrificed and how the community should be united especially from outside threat — the Chinese community.
He said that the Chinese community were “the Jews of Asia” and were just itching to take over when Malays were disunited and broken.
The speaker also revealed a greater Chinese conspiracy where the Chinese Malaysians were working together with Singapore to topple the Malay government.
“Do you want to become like the Malays in Singapore?” he asked.
He also went so far as to criticise Malay girls for dating boys from other races.
He added that they should not be cheap and embarrass their families.
Once, a student told the speaker that as Muslims, we should also respect other races who are also Muslims.
“All Muslims are Malays so it does not matter if they are Chinese or Indians. If they are Muslims then they are Malays,” the speaker replied.
This is why I was relieved when I learned that the Selangor government had moved to ban its civil servants, employees of state subsidiaries and students at state-owned education institutions from attending any BTN courses with immediate effect.
However I believe racism in varsities does not end at BTN because classrooms have also become victims of ignorant scholars.
My friend was verbally abused during his sociology class when he did not agree with the points made by his lecturer.
“You must be DKK,” the lecturer told him.
“What is DKK?” he asked.
“You must be darah keturunan keling (descendents of Indians),” the lecturer said, pointing to his dark skin.
My Saudi friend was also shocked by the comments made by his lecturer in his Islamic civilisation class.
“We should save our Orang Asli from the Chinese people. They are like the Palestinians and the Chinese are Israel. We must fight the Jews,” the lecturer told his students.
The lecturer even failed one of his students in his oral exam when he quoted a Western scholar in his presentation.
“You should be ashamed of yourselves. You are a Muslim and should only use Islamic scholars,” he scolded the student.
I was personally saddened when my Islamic law lecturer compared Christianity to Head & Shoulder’s 3 in 1 shampoo in referring to the religion’s Holy Trinity.
I feel that racism has been institutionalised in our country and that BTN is only the tip of the iceberg.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin defended BTN yesterday and claimed that it was not racist but is line with the 1 Malaysia concept.
I have to humbly disagree and would like to suggest maybe the ministers should bring their overseas children home and let them have a taste of what BTN is.

Organized racism has been used before in South Africa and Nazi Germany with terrible consequences and if UMNO continues down this line, this nation is set for a terrible time and consequence. Thank God for the presence of PR in the corridors of power. Since they came in, all the evil which we knew existed but layed hidden have been revealed. There is more to come for sure.

The reason why government servants and students have to attend, contrary to what the DPM thinks, is that it is mandatory to being confirmed in the service. Many who sit through the BTC courses bite their tongues even if they disagree with the trainers because it has been shared that during the trainings, those who ask questions are sought out and asked about their family history etc. Naturally people get worried and do not bring their experiences out of the training centre.
But a few have been brave to document what they experienced and today political leaders are bold enough to address the real issues behind the BTN. Let not the government kid us that the BTN is nothing but an innocent, unity fostering programme. It is definitely not.
Again, Asrul, I agree. Ask all members of the Cabinet who have their kids studying and working abroad to have a taste of what struggling, law-abiding, patriotic Malaysians have to endure.

Let me relate to you an example that personally happened to me when I was an undergraduate engineering student in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) between 1995 and 1999.
In UTM back then, all students regardless of race or religion had to take up a few subjects on Islamic Studies as part of their coursework.
In one of these lectures, an ustazah who was our lecturer was commenting on religion. I felt very offended but could not say anything when she told us that if the Hindu religion was right and has many deities, then why isn't there many suns or many moons in the sky?
This was a shocking display of complete ignorance and understanding of other religions and religious concepts. It was also very, very disrespectful, especially for a lecturer to say this.
Back then I was only 18 years old and a timid young student. I did not understand the gravity of this lecturer's comment to the class. Now I realise how bad it is.
Why must they do this to us?

I'm currently studying in NUS, and I happen to know Malays in Singapore to be much more successful than them. Malays here do graduate with flying colours in NUS (read: internationally prestigious uni), sometimes topping the charts.
Do Malays in Malaysia want to be like them? I think the answer should be yes. At best, racism sentiments in Singapore is not as explicit, something that Malaysians ought to learn from.

I congratulate Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani for his courage in bringing this out in the open. This attempt to manipulate the mind of the Malay has gone on for some time. if not stopped it will result in the destruction of this country. our oil reserves will not last long. And we will need the enrgy, enterprise and creativity of all our people to develop new business enterprises so that the furture of the country and its people can be secured. the way forward is not to alienate and divide the people of Malaysia. the way forwrd is not to frighten the Chinese and Indian so that the brightest amongst them flee from the country. The way forward is not to stifle the creative enterprise of the most entrepreneurial of the races of this country. the way forward is to accept each other as Malaysians and hand in hand move forward to create a proposperous country. The young people of this country must reject racism in whatever form it appears and embrace each other as Malaysians. Racist and divisive policies like Ketuanana melau must be rejected.

Let me relate an incident to you that I witnessed. A malay lady pulled up infront of a pharmacy and a boy about 10 years alighted from the car and came in and ask for "Panadol". The Chinese salesgirl asked him whether he wanted a strip or a box in Malay. The boy replied "One box". He paid for it and left. Quite awhile later the mother came in with the box opened and demanded she wanted a refund for the balance as she only wanted a strip. The sales girl politely told her it was not possible since the box was opened and that was what the boy asked for. It was shocking to hear her going into a racist tirade against the poor salesgirl ending with " You Cina balik Tongsan" and stormed out. That poor salesgirl just stood there and you would see the shock on the face. So much for race relations in this country. Maybe she was a product of BTN's courses.
Guess who do we have to thank for for institutionalising racism and religious intolerance in this country but no prizes for guessing right.

With BTN, basically the FEDERAL government is running a HATE campaign. They want to stay forever in power at all costs.
And Mahethir further want to abolish vernacular schools kononnya the existence of these schools does not promote unity when BTN has been running since 1981 with his full blessings.

Despite being in a rural school where I was only 1 out of 3 chinese in my entire class, we never felt leftout and we were never racist, we don't even understand what it meant then. I can still speak BM like a native, a true Malaysian.
Sadly today, things are so different. Go to a pasar tani and speak BM with 'slang', I get funny looks from both chinese & malay traders. Ask for malay food in a malay staff in BM, I get people coming over to my table and ask me 'where did I learn BM', I told them "in school lar"... and this is in an urban area like Shah Alam town centre!
But the saddest part is the younger generation, I was in Shah Alam muzeum with my wife, who, like me, also educated in the same generation. As we enjoy our walk in the muzeum walking through quieter corridors, young malay students, wearing Mara tags, walk pass us and whisper 'communist' and some other verbal insults, both male and female students. They are so young!
I can't imagine what will happen to this country as this generation take over the running of the country.
I used to tell my friends, it is the politicians who are playing racist game, the average person on the street are not, I no longer dare to say that.

Should Malaysian Malays be like their counterpart in Singapore? The answer is a resounding "YES", if they want to be respected by the world and have the competency to compete in an increasingly globalised world. I believe most Malays in Malaysia are kind, hardworking and friendly, but they have been living in the lies of UMNO for years. Be like Singapore Malays, DON'T EVER be like corrupted and moral-zero UMNO, their cronies, some Chinese in MCA & Gerakan like Lim Liong Sik and Indian in MIC like Samy Vellu, all they know is to steal your money, under-table, suck blood like leeches, kacau-bilau, bohong besar dan amat besar, disgustingly incompetent yet pocketed billions of rakyat money, full of lies in everything they say, power crazy at the expense of rakyat and democracy. The country is on the road to failed nation because of this minor group of satanic maggots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTN is taking this out of context and angling the ''Jews of East'' as though Chinese are the enemy of Islam and hence must be treated with caution. Is this where my tax money is going? Teaching my own countrymen to hate me because I am of certain ethnicity?
Oh I rather be a Malay in Singapore than be a Chinese in Malaysia cause i dont bloody hell care what my skin color is as long as I know my merits are recognised, my neighbours dont hate me and my wife's handbag doesnt get snatched under broad daylight!

I've been overseas all of my life and has only gone back to Malaysia for Uni. And knowing I had to go through BTN to graduate was something I dreaded but accepted. Altho I don't remember it being racist, I dooo remember it as being discriminatory towards other political parties/ members who are not of the ruling party. And it's true... it wasss like a brainwash camp, or should I say a lousy attempt at brainwashing cause obviously it didn't work. I came out of the hall feeling horrified at the behaviour of these speakers.
As for the lecturers that were described... I'm thankful to say that from my major course lecturers, I have not encountered such at all. But quite the opposite, I was taught to be objective. However, sadly there were one or two who were from my minor course lecturers who were discriminatory and thaaat annoyed me beyond words. Since sociology is closely related to my field of study, I'd have to say that I'm surprised that a 'socio' lecturer would say such things. In my opinion, he is not fit to be a sociologists.

The moment anyone practises disrespect, bias and injustice, it only means that the end of that social order is near..in this case Malaysia as a progressive and moderate nation. thanks to leaders like Tun Razak and others, men who showed a meanness of spirit when in fact they should have embraced natural law, our adventure as a nation built on sound principles is in danger of dismal failure.

Anyways, my writing is just a reaction to the supposedly "racist" incident related here by swipenter. Anyone of us would probably be mad with the counter girl whatever her race because it would be the odd buyer indeed looking for a whole box of Panadol! She shd have the good sense to assume the boy just wanted a strip! She did not deserve the uncouth and indefensible telling off, of course, but it is perfectly understandable why the boy's mother would be so irritated. I think she was just being the typical Msian in her "colourful" tirade. Let's face it, we are a superficially (as opposed to being instrinsically) very race-conscious society and all of us are guilty subconsciously whether we attended the so-called brain-washing or not. It all boils down to the unfortunate break-down of our nation's racial demographics that is our colonial legacy and probably unavoidable no matter how we wished we could be any different, like other countries, which in any case do not share the same break-down we have even if they are also "multi-racial".

I've had a few fortunate friends who were JPA/Bank Negara/Petronas scholars and were already on their way to booking their flight tickets to study abroad. So, this BTN was considered a final hurdle as they will be judged by the government officials as to whether they're fit for flying or not.
According to my friends, there were alot of preaching and lectures on Malay's rights, Ketuanan crap, and alot of government propaganda going on. Oh, you may have already heard of this before but hhmm, alot of emphasis on the non-Malays being immigrants in this country ( for goodness sake, the younger generations are born in this country and how many have died here, damn it), how we are supposed to be grateful to the Malays and all. And yes, there are also question and answer sessions which you will have to give the answer they would like to hear (something pro-government) like one of the comments have pointed out. Basically, there's alot of brainwashing going on even my blood boils listening to my friends and their experience. Fortunately, one of my friend said there were some Malay students who disagreed with the officers and debated with them, to no avail because to be fair, as a student I understand some of them wouldn't want to jeopardize their opportunity of studying abroad or their scholarship. But it's good to know that all is not lost.
And mind you, all of my friends went to different camps but they all came back with the same story.

Besides, we grew up in a multi cultural country which provide us rich life experience of different traditions which other countries do not have.
Why not we cherish the good that we have and start building our country???

" The habit of of automatically assuming superiority over the other is the antithesis of critical thinking, its a dangerous habit that threaten both democracy and world peace. Those who feel superior generally either try to force their ways on others causing much violence and many wars, or care less about the fate of humans they think less valuable, allowing widespread tolerance of national and global poverty and suffering. A sense of superiority lead people to forget that all groups have an essential similarity that is far more important than any difference among them and every group is human. It is neither reasonable nor productive to react to difference, which is to be expected by thoughtlessly assuming that one particular human group is inferior or less valuable than another."

I am a chinese and I found you guy are great and pls do not get influence by the Umno nasty propaganda of "Ketuanan Melayu". It should be read as "Ketuanan UMNO"
Petronas had contributed trillion to BeeEnd Gov for the past 35 years. With that money, the country can build more than 100 University and all desire Malaysian can go into university without quota like what is practice now. Perhaps evryone will not need to pay such high taxes now. But instead the money went to the crooks UMNO govn and spin off to individual account to enrich themself. Tun Mamak is the 1st to allow all this suck things happen back door and BTN is one of them to control you guy. You all need to know, we are under indian PM for 20 years, and the judiciary, police force and sprm had been mess up like ganster style agency. After all their corrupted deed exposed day by day, they were punished miserably in the last election. Now, they are using a new propaganda 1Malaysia mirroring DSAI to unite all races knowing that they had lost the people trust.

Initially, i thought BTN should be as described by Asrul. However, after attending one here, i beg to differ. I did not regret attending one, and if, i had another chance, i would gladly join again.

The seeds of racial suspicion are already being sown in the minds of very, very young Malays. This is perhaps the gravest danger facing the Malaysian education system: resolving this threat requires the sincere goodwill and good judgement of our politicians and pedagogues.

As DPM, shouldn't he have known the terrible things that have been going on?? If he had known, why didn't he put a stop to it rather than defending it?? Our DPM is also our Education Minister!! I shudder to think of what he might do to our education policy if his intent is not free from suspicions. Let all men of goodwill put a stop to all these horrifying happenings. Let's dissovle BTN entirely!!!

Thanked God for I'm furthering my studies at a private, foreign university. At least I do not have to undergo with a useless and brain-washing piece-of-junk program that "aims" to "educate" patriotism among the citizens, but instead incite hatred, discrimination, prejudice, and racism.. Is this a kind of program that was sponsored? Good goverment... U make Malaysia become a laughing stock in other countries...

This ie exactly like what I experienced with the MASS movement in London in 1970, you get recruited through the London Union of Malayan Students at "tea parties" held at Malaysia Hall at that time in Brystone Square, then when you go to the MASS movement meetings which was actually the student wing of the Malayan communist Party you get indoctrinated the same way, I refused to accept what they said, they'd ridicule me,a nd even threatened me with physical violence so I was forced to tone down. They ahd huge banners that read, "Down with the Razak led puppet puppet regime of the British" they had all kinds of slogans, the Wisma Putra people know of this body. The Mass movement was then adopting the policies of the "Red Guard Movement in China," the only difference was it was not a racially biased group, it comprised all Malaysians, Malays, Chinese and Indians, and don't dare for one moment think it was led by any Malaysian Chinese, because it was not. They were talking about liberating Malaya by 1975. I think China has played a part in this racial ketuanan Melayu concept here, it has now to reexamine its policies with this government and it really has because it has been used, because Communist ideology does not recognize race as a factor.

Just go to any public hospital and look at the poor under paid and over worked staff, look at the state of the equipment, many supplied by 'privatised' operators which are in rusted, broken and poor condition and have never been replaced and repaired. Wards that have not changed in condition since the colonial days, toilets worst than those in bus stops! Most of the patients there are the poor malays, the people that this warped government claim they are protecting and and helping. This is only one of the consequences of the rape of Malaysia. All Malaysians of all races need to be disgusted.
There is no Ketuanan Melayu, it is the psuedo-code word for Ketuanan Ahli2 UMNO and their money-slaves and the rest of any race or creed or income level be dammed.

BTN should be abolished if lectures of hate and ill will are to be taught by these "brainless"lecturers.
