DAP assemblyman owns up to malicious SMS

PENANG, Dec 4 — Sungai Pinang DAP assemblyman Koid Teng Guan has admitted and apologised for forwarding a short-message service (SMS) text belittling the Barisan Nasional to over 400 people during the state assembly sitting on Tuesday.

Koid said he regretted his action as it was inappropriate for him, as an elected representative, to do so.

“I sincerely apologise and I will not repeat the act; forwarding the inappropriate message that joked about my political opponents,” he said at a press conference held in the state assembly building, here, today.

The SMS, believed to have originated from a Pakatan Rakyat supporter, belittled the BN component parties and urged people to send them to hell.

State executive councillor Phee Boon Poh, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Koay Teng Hai, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s political secretary Ng Wei Aik and Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu were also present at the press conference to lend support to Koid and to extend the state’s regrets over the matter.

Meanwhile, State Gerakan communication and publicity bureau secretary Dr Thor Teong Gee slammed Koid for his action, saying that he had set a bad example.

“The latest incident with the SMS also shows that he was not paying attention to the state assembly proceedings. We also have information that Koid and the Chief Minister are related.

“We don’t know whether this is true. If it is, perhaps Lim, who is also the DAP secretary-general, will find it difficult to act against him. If this information is inaccurate, we hope Lim will also inform us,” he said.

Thor said according to a Chinese daily’s report, Koid had also failed to attend to the grouses of his Sungai Pinang constituents.

The state Gerakan and MCA had earlier called on Lim to instruct Koid to resign as assemblyman, citing previous incidents involving him, such as his plagiarising a former BN assemblyman’s written questions for a state assembly sitting last year and clash with the police near the Perak state assembly building earlier this year, which he was also arrested for participating in an illegal gathering. — Bernama
