By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz has come out in defence of the Home Ministry’s move in appealing to the Court of Appeal over the controversial “Allah” issue.
He said that High Court judge Lau Lee Lan, who made the ruling that Catholics could use the word “Allah” in their weekly publication Herald, was wrong.
Nazri asserted that the judicial review was supposed to be on whether the Home Minister had the power to impose the ban, not on whether non-Muslims should be allowed to use the word “Allah”.
“In my opinion, the judge has erred in making the decision. The issue is whether the Home Minister had the power to impose a ban on the Catholic church in using the term “Allah”, not whether “Allah” can be used or not.
“The Home Minister was definitely acting within his powers in exercising the ban, in view of public interest and sensitivities in order to avoid public unrest over the matter,” said Nazri.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s department explained that the supposed error in the judge’s ruling justified the Home Ministry seeking an appeal at the Appellate Court.
“We have to take into consideration the culture and nature of Malaysia. What is considered normal in the United States and Europe is not necessarily normal here.
“The Home Minister was doing the right thing, in making a decision to avoid public unrest and dissatisfaction among Muslims, who make up more than 60 per cent in this country,” said Nazri.
Nazri compared the “Allah” uproar to the cow-head protests in Shah Alam, saying that it is essentially very similar.
“Take the cow-head protests for example. If you look at it from a legal perspective, there seems to be nothing wrong with stepping on the head of a cow. But because a significant portion of this country’s
citizens are Hindus, the government has taken action against the cow-head protestors.”
The now-infamous cow head protest, which took place in Shah Alam in August last year was spearheaded by a group of Malay residents “angry” at the Selangor State Government for relocating a Hindu temple to Section 23, a Malay-Muslim majority area.
“I see the usage of the word “Allah” and the cow-head incident as the same. If you can take action against cow-head protestors, why not over the usage of “Allah” among non-Muslims? We have to be fair in the matter,” stated Nazri.
He went on to question the purpose of the Catholic church’s insistence in using the word “Allah”, saying that it was “irresponsible” and “looking for trouble”.
“If you do want to use the word God in Bahasa Malaysia, God is Tuhan. I don’t understand why you want to use Allah.
“The Malay word for God is Tuhan. Of course Muslims are not satisfied. For 50 plus years after independence this issue has never cropped up before.”
Nazri also urged fellow Muslims to not be carried away by emotions and to let common sense prevail, adding that if they demonstrate and cause public unrest, it may affect the decision making process in the Court of Appeal.
“We leave it to the Court of Appeal to find a solution to the matter.”

FACT 1 : "Allah" has been in use for four centuries. You can also visit this link to view a sample page of a Bahasa bible circa 1818. [http://www.christian-journey.com/bahasa-malaysia-bible/] where it contains the word "Allah". Long before anyone of us were born, East Malaysians were already using the word.
FACT 2 : The Herald has been in print since 1994. Why didn't UMNO bring up the issue during these 16 years. Why only now?
FACT 3 : Ever since Sabah and Sarawak became part of the federation in 1963, for 47 years the Catholics have used "Allah" in their prayers. Why didn't UMNO ban the East Malaysians from using the word during this time. Why only now?
In other words, UMNO conduct its affairs on a "whims and fancies" approach. If the party was consistent with its policies, this issue would not have boiled over of late. Also, try not to scare us with statements like "national security", "sensitive to the Muslims", etc. If anything had happened it would have happened a long time ago [either from 1963 or 1994 till now], but it is UMNO who is stoking the issue to win back the Malay votes. This, therefore, is a political gambit and not a religious one. Scapegoats have to be found and the Catholics fitted the bill perfectly. The "Allah" issue was [pardon the pun] truly God-sent.

His comparison to the cow head protestors who were not engaged in prayer of any form but were deliberately insulting another religion is clearly ludicrous. His rationale here is either intellectually vacuous or dishonest or a combination of both.

The cases are similar because they were instigated by UMNO.

From an outsider's perspective, the "hooha" just showed that many Malaysians are still immature and narrow-minded. This incident does not show the spirit of 1Malaysia that many of the hypocrite politicians are championing...
No point having the 1Malaysia advertisements, essay writing and song competitions. They are useless if our society cannot accept each other's existence!
We are moving toward a Developed country, but some Malaysians are not 'developed'! Malaysia is hopeless from my point of view, although i am a Malaysian living in Malaysia... sad sad...

I believe it is the idea mooted by UMNO to win over the Malay voters. This could very well be at the expense of christian voters in Sabah and Sarawak. Why Pairin and Dompok silent over Allah issue?

- Cow head protest is a deliberate act at insulting Hindus
- The Christians insistence on using Allah in their BM publications and BM version of the Bible is both grounded in historical fact and protected under this countries constitution
I am West Malaysian (shouldn't matter because we are supposed to be 1Malaysia, right?) and have spent the last five years working in East Malaysia, I have seen with my own eyes and heard with my own ears, that BM is the common language used in worship among the Christian communities here that are made up of many different races and tribes (eg. Iban, Kenyah, Kayan, Bidayuh, Kelabit, Lunbawang, Kadazan ).
For those who often say "You should use Tuhan then", my answer to you is "Yes we already do". Tuhan is used as the BM translation for "Our Lord" and Allah is used as the BM translation for "God". Therefore the translation for "Our Lord God" which appears many a time in the Bible is translated as Tuhan Allah and not Tuhan Tuhan which wouldn't sound right and rather unnecessary.
If there is any hint of Christians doing this to insult Islam, it can only be found in the minds who are trying to convince themselves that it is so
written by B.U.N., January 05, 2010
Yes, and like the cow-head protest, we know that UMNO is also behind this protest. Truth is that it is the UMNOPutras who should not invoke the name of Allah for they have taken his name in vain.

Why do you persist on putting your foot in your mouth and demonstrating your incompetence as a minister as well as a human being?
“We have to take into consideration the culture and nature of Malaysia. What is considered normal in the United States and Europe is not necessarily normal here"
- We aren't talking about the US or Europe here, it has been stated many times over that Allah is also used by Middle Eastern Christians. I personally have not come across a single article that references the US and Europe pertaining to this matter. Maybe you can help enlighten us?
“I see the usage of the word “Allah” and the cow-head incident as the same. If you can take action against cow-head protestors, why not over the usage of “Allah” among non-Muslims? We have to be fair in the matter,”
- The use of the word Allah by Christians in Malaysia are for matters pertaining to Christianity and its usage of Bahasa Malaysia within the context of Christianity in Malaysia.
- The cow head incident were people going out looking for trouble knowing that this government will do nothing to stop them. I fail to see the similarity.
Nazri, please do us all a favour, and don't bother to stand for re-election come the next General Elections.

In the Herald or 'Allah' case, the Home Ministry issued the printing permit imposing the new condition (prohibiting the use of Allah word) with a view of winning over the Muslim voters who deserted them at the last GE. The Home Affairs Minister (or HAM in short) thought UMNO staunch supporters would be pleased with HAM's new printing permit. Hence, there were no protest to creat a "threat to national security".
NOW that the Catholic Church challenged HAM's decision in the Court of law and NOW that HAM has lost, UMNO seem to be without any direction or clue as to what had happened and thus, have to create "threat to national security" by promoting and organising demonstrations and cyber-assasination on the Court's decision through "intellectual scholars" as such Tun Dr M, Datuk Seri Khir Toyo, Datuk Sharizat and alike.

You mean when it's not in your favour ?
Now, since the matter had been filed for review by the Court of Appeal, is your statement not tantamount to subjudice ??
Let's say Court of Appeal concur with the findings of the High Court, Are you also going to criticise that the Judges of the Appeal Court were all wrong ??
Gheee , there must be a lot of other issues that were wrong !

1. http://www.harunyahya.com/Qura...ation2.php
2. http://www.islam101.com/quran/QTP/QTP002.htm
Then go to the online Bahasa Melayu Quranic Translation here:
http://www.alquran-melayu.com/
Now, a few examples you can used to do the comparison would be :
1.Al-Baqarah / Surah 2 : verse 5
2.Al-Baqarah / Surah 2 : verse 139
3.Al An’am / Surah 6 : verse 1
4.Al Ahzab / Surah 33 : verses 1 and 2
The above examples are not exhaustive, they are just examples. Just flip through the entire English translation where "Allah" ,"God" and "Lord" is mentioned and see how the words are translated in the Bahasa Melayu translation. Trust me, you will be surprised. Then you can decide who is the lying hypocrite. Allah, apparently, is Not the "Kata Nama Khas" of God as claimed by some quarters. Just read through Abdullah Yusuf Ali's Translation, Allah is NOT used throughout the text, every metion of "Allah" in the Original Arabic text is translated into "God". Pickthall however, did retain "Allah" in his translation, get a hard copy and read up on why Pickthall retained "Allah" in his translation.

Why i say like that, because i have spoken with few Malay frens who are quite open, their opinions are they can accept the decision, however, there are a lot of rural area malay who not understand the history, and their feeling is: oh..you use the word, the word is belong to islam and this thinking has rooted in their mind since young...and soem of them dont even have the chance to us einternet...But we can't blame them to have this kind of thinking....this is their feeling....there is no wrong or right....
That is why, we cant say those who oppose the court ruling as extremist or whatsoever....Some of them is really angry.....
But, we must condem those who politicizing the issue...THis is dangerous...very dangerous...
To me, Religious issue is far more serious and sensitive than racial issue.....so, we have to control ourself...from making any sensitive comments.
THe best way to solve the issue is leave it for the religious council to solve amidcably...the issue can be solve by 2 way communication..........

You may want to hold your comments, since the police may feel "intimidated" that the investigation into this matter may be hindered by your "interference."
Our brave boys in blue, or is it black are a jumpy bunch. After the cowhead incident, they suddenly develop a phobia of criticism or even comments about them. Each time their ears "ring" because someone talks about something pertaining to them, they will lodge police reports.
How will it look for our fearless leader, Najib if there was a police report against his law minister?

Same goes here, the minister imposed a ban, why ban?, security reason, is there a security reason? no, then can the Herald use the word 'Allah', no, why not? Is it exclusive to Muslim or can be used by all. In the finality all these questions will have to be determined.

Dear Datuk,
The nature of West Malaysia is different than the East Malaysia. We are separated by the "laut Cina Selatan" almost 600 kilometers away. You are living in the West but we live in east. Do you know what we think about that matter? No problem at all, datuk.
We have been living here even before the formation of Malaysia and we never had such problem. The Muslim here even more tolerate than you in the west. and We (here) also know the Arabian also don't have any problem with the minority christian there who speaking "Allah" to refer God!
Please remember Datuk, This two states (Sarawak & Sabah) are Christian majority. You are hurting the feelings of these two state by playing that word. How do you suppose these two states to vote you again in the 13GE if you & your friends imposing that ban?
