KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 30 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today renewed his tirade against Khairy Jamaluddin, saying he was not surprised the Umno Youth leader was unpopular and openly wondered how the latter won the post.
The former party president has never seen eye-to-eye with Khairy, who not only won the youth wing’s top post against his son, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, but is also the son-in-law of his nemesis, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
“It unimaginable that an Umno Youth leader was told not to campaign during an election because the party feared if he did, they would lose,” the former prime minister said in reference to the Bukit Gantang by-elections last year.
A blog has claimed that two-thirds of the Umno Youth executive council was ready to resign to pave the way for fresh polls and that there were calls for Khairy to resign.
Khairy’s deputy, Datuk Razali Ibrahim has publicly denied the blog’s claims.
Razali and Mukhriz are deputy ministers but Khairy was not given the traditional posting, similar to Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi when he was Umno youth chief during Dr Mahathir’s time in power.
Dr Mahathir persisted to cast aspersions against Khairy today, saying he did not know how Khairy could have won the Umno Youth chief post in the first place.
“They took seven hours to count 700 votes and that’s strange,” he said, alluding to the elections where both Mukhriz and Datuk Seri Khir Toyo lost to Khairy.
Dr Mahathir noted that Khairy won the deputy youth chief post unopposed in the previous party election because no one stood against him.
“That’s his way, and that’s why they can’t accept it,” he said.
The party’s longest-serving president, who founded Umno again after it was declared illegal in 1988, had always won unopposed, after putting in strict rules governing the eligibility to contest top party posts.
He retired in 2003 and handed over the party and prime minister’s post to Abdullah, but a public between the two then saw Dr Mahathir openly campaigning against his successor and son-in-law.
Dr Mahathir also quit Umno in May 2008 to protest Abdullah’s leadership, but rejoined a day after Datuk Seri Najib Razak was affirmed as party president.

Clearly, it's personal. With Mahathir its never about ideas, visions. It's personal. With Ku Li its personal. Then it was Tun Musa. Then it was Anwar. Once he makes up his mind, he doesnt change it. Some people think that's a sign of strength. To me its a sign of arrogance and God-complex.

Mahathir needs to get over himself. Leaders like KJ are the future. Heck, in UMNO hes the closest they have to a guy with brains to rival those in pakatan rakyat.
Mahathir is responsible for the racism, bigotry and lack of intelligent leaders in UMNO.

I can't remember when was the last time Mahathir had anything good to say about anyone. Disgusting the capacity for hatred even at his age.
Really pathetic.
Btw, I am no fan of Khairy.

KJ is unpopular only with those sycophants and hangers-on in UMNO. They fear for their rice bowls.
UMNO can only survive if KJ and more like him takes over the Party leadership from the current bunch of dinosaurs who outlived their usefulness long ago.

KJ, I would like to think that you are better than the racist people you hang around with. If indeed this is true, I wish you the best, because I do see that you are intelligent and progressive. Unfortunately, this father of racism is against you progressive view. But, I think you can outsmart him, although you may lack experience. Fight on. Better yet, quit UMNO and join PKR or DAP. We can use people like you as long as you discard the racist mentality. UMNO/BN is a sinking ship. You know and I know it.

In reality, what happened in Bukit Gantang was the great Mahathir went to campaign as part of his grand UMNO homecoming only to have BN lose in the end. I am sick and tired of this racist old man. Bitter til the end. Probably so angry that he doesn't have somebody with KJ's talent as his own son.
KJ - You've got a long way to go but you have shown that you can stand on your own feet even after Pak Lah's retirement. You have learnt your lesson and will continue to learn. Don't let this bitter old man take you down like he did your father-in-law. There are many Malaysians out there who want to see you beat him. He has killed off Musa Hitam, Tengku Razaliegh, Anwar Ibrahim and Abdullah Badawi. Don't let it happen to you. I want you to prevail.

With all due respect, KJ did win the UMNO Youth elections and despite not being given a deputy ministership, he has been gracious. His behavior during the recent church incidents was exemplary, and hear and shoulders over the people you support. Please, Tun, in your waning years, do try to remember, as hard as the effort might be, that people are remembered for the last few deeds of their lives. This continued tirade will only serve to let your name live on in infamy.

Know what all these show ?. That Mukhriz on is own has no substance ! that's why you have to chart his move for him. Everyone knows that you want to make him a minister before you kick the bucket so that no one will be able to take away his "cake" of awarded contracts like the attempt that has happened during Tun Abdullah's time.
Well, typical of your NEP policies, isn't it.

Pak Lah alone should not be blamed for the poor performance of the BN. You are equally responsible. You have treated the party like your own private property and you did whatever you liked. Nobody dared to question you. Most were only interested in their own welfare and benefits and positions in the party and government. The party's interest was secondary. All were yes men. Those who were not happy with your way of running the party were silenced by the yes men. Their voices had no place during your leadership. But after many years of silence they made their voices heard through the ballot boxes during the 12th general elections.
Let me just tell you of one case to prove my point. You handpicked Pak Lah as your successor. Was that done in a democratic manner? No! You are the one who also said that Najib should be the Deputy Prime Minister. This is also what you did prior to the party polls. That is you decided for the party, not the members. That goes to show how you used your position as UMNO President and PM to make decisions on behalf of the more than 3.5 million UMNO members and even the 25 million population. You even tied Pak Lah's hands before retiring by openly saying Najib should be the Deputy PM. Rightfully you should have allowed all UMNO members to vote whom they wanted as your successor in an open contest minus the restrictions you had introduce to safeguard your position. Your undemocratic policies finally took the toll on UMNO and BN.
Everyone knows Khairy did not win the elections as UMNO Youth chief by himself but by his position as the son-in-law of Pak Lah. Not only that, the several hours of counting and recounting just 700 odd votes could mean that your son Mukhriz actually won but Khairy had the power behind him and nobody dared take the risk to let Mukhriz win. Isn't this a repeat of what happened in the 1987 UMNO elections where Sanusi played an important role to make you win against Tengku Razaleigh. Pity Mukhriz, who had to pay the price. As I was there, I believe till today that Mukhriz won like the majority who believe till today that Tengku Razaleigh won in the 1987 contest against you.
Khairy is not popular in UMNO. He is just showing to be popular. Because of him and a few others, UMNO and BN faired badly in the 12th general elections for the first time in the history of this country. Khairy together with Najib and Dr. Awang Adek failed were a total failure to take over Kelantan from PAS. The 1969 general elections was not this bad for the Alliance party as it still had the majority. However you were among the few who lost their parliament seats.
Majority of the leaders of UMNO and other BN component parties are still not accepting the fact that they are not wanted by the voters. They are still trying to hold on to their positions claiming to be still popular. Many of the current ministers and deputy ministers are those who lost in the 12th general elections. Can BN get back its past glory with so many rejects still being made ministers and deputy ministers? The way things are today, BN is heading towards disaster. There is still hope for UMNO and BN provided the leaders are willing for drastic changes. Looks like there won't be any drastic change, so BN's rule is coming to an end latest by the next general elections. All the stubborn and power crazy leaders in BN must be blamed if this happens to BN.
