Sub-station fire leaves 10,000 powerless

PENANG, Feb 1 — Some 10,000 residents in Sungai Pinang were left in the dark today after a fire at the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) sub-station disrupted electricity supply.

Penang TNB general manager Abdul Aziz Jaafar said areas affected by the 4.45pm fire included Jalan Larut and Jalan Chowrasta.

He said as of 7pm, power supply to about 80 per cent of the areas affected had been restored.

“Repair work is ongoing with full restoration expected by 9pm. The losses incurred and cause of the fire are being investigated,” he told reporters today.

The fire destroyed some cables in the power supply box.

Meanwhile, Jalan Perak fire station chief Skein Citbanchong said 50 men in 10 engines rushed to the scene but had difficulty entering the sub-station due to thick smoke. — Bernama
