PKR backs Perak sacking councillor for illicit sex

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat has backed the Perak state government's decision to sack Perak Tengah district councillor Zul Hassan from his post, party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail said today.

Zul is under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Agency for accepting sexual bribes but justified his action by saying he was induced to have sex with Chinese nationals in Penang.

"Such a statement makes a mockery of Pakatan Rakyat's pledge towards a government that respects the trust of the people," Dr Wan Azizah said in a statement.

She added the Perak government's swift action shows its seriousness in putting into practice Pakatan Rakyat's commitment to ensure that morality and ethics are upheld by those in public office and not merely expressed in words. The electoral pact is made up of PKR, the DAP and Pas.

"Towards that end, Zul will be dealt with by PKR's disciplinary committee and will have to explain the remark when he made comparison of his inability to succumb to temptation to someone who is being offered sedekah (charity).

"It is important that good conduct comes from the top in order to set an example for the younger generation. As such, we fully back the action taken on Zul and will support whatever action taken in future as and when there is enough evidence of wrongful conduct," Dr Wan Azizah said.

She also said that Mohammad Imran Abdullah, whom Zul said induced him into having illicit sex, is not a PKR member.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said yesterday the Pakatan Rakyat government had asked Zul to quit on Friday.

"This is because he is unfit to represent the Government in the council and we have told him to quit as soon as possible," Nizar said, adding that Zul's case would serve as a warning to all councillors not to engage in any indecent or corrupt practices in their line of duty.

Nizar has also recommended the ACA to look into the report that Zul and businessman Fairul Azrim Ismail had filed with the Perak Religious Department against their alleged inducer Mohammad Imran.
