JUNE 5 — I do not know who Awang Selamat is, but he keeps haunting me, claiming that I've owed him something!
Other than banks, I don't think I have owed anyone anything.
All the things I've had, from the birth certificate when I was born, to the car I bought at the age of 22, and my house at 30... have all been acquired in a clean way, including my self respect.
Moreover, because I do not know Awang Selamat at all, as I said earlier, how could I possibly owe him anything?
But in an article entitled “The Malays are betrayed” published in Utusan Malaysia recently, Awang Selamat said Chinese Malaysians were immigrants, and were indebted to the Malays.
I am a Chinese Malaysian, one in the six million. He said the Chinese owed this and owed that, and as a Chinese, I can't help but ask: "What have I owed you?"
Also, I am not an immigrant. My birth cert and IC, along with all the documents of my assets point to the fact that I am a rightful Malaysian citizen.
The Constitution protects my status, my rights as well as my properties. If I've done anything against the laws, I will be bound by Malaysian laws, like anyone else.
Of course, I can say proudly that I have paid my income tax and owe not a sen.
Moreover, I have never betrayed my Malay friends. We treat one another sincerely and fairly.
When my old friend Ghaffar buys me teh tarik, I'll get him nasi lemak in return, even though nasi lemak is 20 sen more expensive than teh tarik.
But that's not because I feel I'm indebted to him; neither do I think he's trying to take advantage of me!
Right, Awang said Chinese Malaysians were getting more and more demanding, and racist, after the general election in March 2008.
What demands, or should I say what excessive demands, have the Chinese voiced up?
Scholarships? Land titles? Chinese primary schools? Democracy? Equality?
All I know is that these are reasonable requests from each and every citizen. As long as they are eligible, they should possess them.
It has nothing to do with race.
If we are denied these things because of skin colour, then we must fight for them. This is not racism either.
Although I have no idea who Awang is, I know he is hiding under the protective net of Utusan Malaysia.
He may be an individual, or a group of individuals. And he may have his own hidden agendas for his displeasure with Chinese Malaysians.
A lawyer friend told me, it is an act of sedition just to brand ethnic Chinese Malaysians as immigrants, and that the police should probe the incident.

Dont get riled up over what Awang wrote and play into his hands. He is desperately trying to bring Malays back to Umno. Expect more issues from this racist and from racist groups under BN. Consider Gerakan bringing the issue of Chin Peng up and the immediate reaction from Govt as a clever attempt to bring Malays back to Umno and Chinese back to MCA and Gerakan. It's totally unreasonable for Awang to write such stuff. Those stuff he wrote will break up Malaysia. But unfortunately, our government didn't do anything at all. Folks out there... do not get so work up. Since when utusan's news and articles can be trusted? It is a mainstream gossip paper at best and my nasi lemak wrappers at its usefulness.

The whole situation after 308 is that UMNO had lost the respect of the rakyat and now they are trying to rile racial sentiments hoping to gain some ground. They talk about how important "UNITY" is but behind the scene they are trying their utmost to fan hatred among Malaysians. Such organisation deserve no respect from fair minded Malaysians. Let us all in a peaceful way vote all of them out during GE13.

So what if I'm a Malaysian of Chinese descent? If you cut me, I bleed red, like the Malays and Indians. I suffered the same as my Malay and Indian brothers and sisters when the petrol price went sky high. I am hit badly when the economy slows down (like right now) just like my Malay and Indian friends.
But I want a meritocratic Malaysia, where hard work and intelligence are rewarded and the weak ones are motivated to fight to better and improve themselves in order to keep the country competitive in the global scene (in stark contrast to the quota system in everything - from business to education).
NOT a country where corruption reigns supreme; a country where its riches and resources are ripped off by a selected (UMNOputra) few; a country whose judiciary, armed forces and police are all controlled and used by UMNO; a country where fear and racism are used to control the mass.
My question to Awang Selamat (and everyone else): If the country is invaded tomorrow by some vicious forces, would you have stayed and fought for the country, or would you fly your family and yourself out of here as soon as possible?
I don't know about you, but this Chinese Malaysian will stay and fight - till her very last drop of blood - for her country. That is the extent of MY LOVE FOR MY COUNTRY.
AND YET I'm still labelled as 'pendatang' by UMNO and Utusan :-P

I would suggest Pakatan identify the Utusan clown who has been writing under that Awang Selamat name, and make a civil case against him. Sue the pants off him as an individual. Let the clown get what he deserves. Remember, civil case, no need police report. You don't need police to take action. Although judiciary is mostly controlled by BN, there are still some good judges around.

Why do all these Malays think we Chinese owe them anything? Many Malay Doctors like Dr Abdul Rahman Yusof are a disgrace to the medical profession. They made it to medical schools because of their race. Unlike these Malay doctors, I studied hard and made it through medical schools on my merits.

Well after all we are all the same. My great grandfather was migrated to Malaysia from China and your great grandfather was from Indonesia. Awang Selamat Remember when you die the question that will be put forward to you is not whether you are a bumiputera or not. I am a Muslim convert. One thing that really attracted me iin Islam that all man are born equal. In Malaysia sometimes when we pracitise double standards I ask myself is this what championing Islam all about.
