Nov 13 — What is wrong with Petronas sponsoring Lotus F1, asks Kamarudin Meranun? If the state-owned oil company can sponsor BMW-Sauber, there should be no reason why it cannot sponsor Lotus instead, now that the German outfit is pulling out of Formula One. Right?
Except that from soon after the 1 Malaysia F1 team was announced, the government has stated that it would not have a direct stake in the entire exercise. And rightly so. At a time when the country’s economy is stagnating, spending public money on Formula One can only be deemed a flagrant waste.
Beyond having “1 Malaysia” stamped on the team, the administration has said it will not have any equity in Lotus. Can they now make Petronas put its money into Lotus? Petronas, the company wholly owned by the Malaysian government, and still say the “government has no direct equity in Lotus F1”? How silly do they think the people actually are?
Secondly, Petronas sponsoring BMW wasn’t a gamble. BMW is a big name, and not just in Formula One. There’s something for Petronas to gain by having its name associated with a brand like BMW, and it goes beyond the racetrack. Why do you think Petronas is so keen to sponsor anything and everything BMW? Because of Formula One alone?
Lotus may have been big in Britain in its heyday, but it’s not big anywhere else. Not anymore. Not even here. In Malaysia, the only Lotus people are familiar with is the one that serves banana leaf rice. Why would they want to confuse Malaysians into thinking a nasi kandar restaurant is racing in Formula One?
Beyond that, BMW-Sauber were actually a successful team. Not a championship-winning team, but they got on the podium. In 2008, they managed to get on to the podium a total of 11 times and won once in a one-two finish in Montreal. The Petronas logos on BMW’s cars were therefore guaranteed of air-time.
Even in the woeful 2009 season, so bad that it triggered the team’s withdrawal from the sport, they still got coverage. People wanted to know why BMW-Sauber flunked, why Kubica’s engine blew up, how come Heidfeld was off the pace. Nobody cared why Force-India were slow. At times people might not have even noticed they were on track.
Will Lotus generate the same level of press magnetism? Will people care that they didn’t finish the race? Will they even care if they turn up?
So, what’s wrong with Petronas sponsoring Lotus F1?
