JULY 23 — One of the wonderful things about living in Malaysia is that we devote so much of our resources into building brain power. We love smart people in Malaysia. Parents spend an obscene amount on tuition classes.
Let’s look at some of the major initiatives by our wonderful government to increase our brain power:
1) Malaysia will produce more than 100,000 PhDs by 2012
2) Creating “knowledge” workers and “world-class” IT industry via the MSC
3) Almost all grants by MOSTI is geared towards science and technology
4) Building new universities left and right. In the 1980s we had fewer than a dozen universities — now we have more than 20 public universities and an equal number of private universities
5) “Apex” and “research” universities allocated extra millions of ringgit with the aim of getting into the top 200 university rankings
6) All sorts of academic prizes from all sorts of dubious exhibitions
7) Smart schools
8) All sorts of scholarships — JPA alone gives more than 2,000 overseas scholarships. If you include Mara and GLCs and private companies, the number is probably somewhere about 6,000-7,000 overseas scholarships plus thousands of local scholarships
9) “Brain gain” programme where we try to entice successful Malaysian scientists to come back to help our R&D
10) All sorts of government-backed programmes like the invention awards, best ICT Company, PM’s innovation awards, smart partnership, etc.
Yet, somehow we seem to be going the opposite direction. Mind you it’s been there for more than a decade already and, correct me if I am wrong; the MSC has been a dismal failure since the “knowledge” industry has not taken off and no major Malaysian IT inventions since the inception of the MSC. Cyberjaya is still years behind Singapore.
In fact, the most famous “Malaysian” IT invention — the pen drive — was invented in Taiwan by a Malaysian Chinese who could not even enter a public university here. He had to go to Taiwan, get a degree there (which is not recognised here!) and invented the pen drive there. So today, the world thinks it’s a Taiwan invention! Malaysia Boleh!
The brain gain programme is so successful that almost all the scientists who came back to work here have resigned from the public universities or government research centres, and the bulk of them have left for overseas again. Needless to say, their major complaints were racism (almost all were non-Bumiputeras) and red tape. But no one wants to admit to this since it’s not a very smart thing to admit failure.
Meanwhile we are rushing to produce 100,000 PhDs. Since most of these 100,000 PhDs will be awarded by local public universities you really have to wonder about the quality. But who cares? The important thing is to graduate 100,000 “doctors” of dubious quality so that they can train the next generation. After all, the majority of these PhDs will end up as professors in our public universities and they will supervise the next generation of PhDs. Remember the movie “Dumber and Dumber”?
Is it any wonder that our public universities’ ranking is dropping fast?
On top of that, we have decided to stop emphasising English at the high school level. No wonder international schools are celebrating — their student enrolment will go through the roof from next year onwards.
And to ensure that we have the right environment to produce “Towering Malays” and “world-class” Malaysians, the mainstream newspapers here follow the same editorial style as China’s People’s Daily and the old Soviet Union’s Pravda. Truth is not as important as propaganda and the promotion of racism and racist ideology. Malay newspapers are free to preach racism as long as they reinforce “Malay unity” and Malay dominance. News is only news if the government says so.
In the arts, local productions cannot reflect reality. How else can you explain government directives that Mat Rempits and transvestites cannot be shown on Malaysian movies and television. The way it works is like this: if we don’t show Mat Rempits and transvestites, then they do not exist! See how smart we have become because of all the government investment in educating Malaysians? Very soon, there will be no prostitutes or gay people in Malaysia.
Just to be sure, the government has just announced another round of books that are banned in Malaysia. In total more than 2,000 titles are banned in Malaysia. Some authors do not even know that their books are banned. Reading is a dangerous habit for a knowledge nation.
Meanwhile religion, or the official view of religion, is shafted down the throats of young people through television programmes and in the schools.
You really have to wonder how on earth Malaysia produces thinking citizens since all around them the system, from the mass media to the education system to the universities, is designed to damage the brain? The whole system is designed to produce a non-thinking, non-critical person who can easily be manipulated by propaganda.
It is really mind-boggling that somehow young people have managed to escape this system. Of course there are thousands who believe in the system and are basically brain dead, especially after reading the Malay newspapers and watching the local television stations. But there is a significant portion of young people out there who have managed to overcome the attempt to control their mind. I take my hat off to these young people. Without them, Malaysia will have no future.

this theory is largely stemmed from the self esteem issue that Malaysians have. Forever it seems that our population wants to be 'developed' so that we are recognized internationally and we do so on material things where we deem most visible such as twin towers whilst ignoring the fundamental infrastructures that has real economic value like more efficient public transport and smarter toll systems instead of funneling traffic in order to tax the people on marginal basis.
Handing out PHDs like toilet paper will indeed be visible and we pat each other on the back and that would make us feel better like how we pride ourselves staring at the structure that the Japanese and Koreans built. So long as we can keep fooling ourselves, what does it matter anyways? we keep patting on each others back as any negative criticism, whilst constructive, will be labeled sensitive and fizzled out by shifting goal posts. Thus this is the spiral we fall in.
however hope comes in the form of insights such as yours coupled with technology so that information flows more freely. slowly the right mindset might get into play as the old ages into oblivion. this may take time but as current trend is proving Malaysia may change for the better. though i hope im not being too optimistic.

indeed the education in Malaysia is constantly being upgraded, but from what i see the smarter they get, the dumber they'll be.. i really do wish my kind can embrace the thoughts of yours.. but i am ashamed to admit that some number of them just are too intoxicated with their thoughts that they presume only that their thoughts are correct.. not that all of them are so, but the majority.. do continue writing your thoughts so that i could spread what the others think of our Malaysia, differently from the dominant..

In the developed world a Phd. is only incidental to one's research and innovation; the main pursuit is the research subject and the award of Phd. is only incidental. It is nonsense to "study for a Phd for its own sake like what is going on in Malaysia. You can get a Phd. counting pins in a particular way. What is the point of the Phd. Rais Yatim has a Phd.

I can't really see the future for Malaysia if we going on like this. Since we are 1 Malaysia, why shall we still be categorized under Bumis/Non-bumis? Why we cannot learn from Singapore to appreciate those with real capabilities? I do not see those Malays in Singapore complaining? I think some of them are extremely successful in Singapore and they come out from a system that encourage stiff competition among themselves. We should not spoon feeding to anyone, whether bumi/non bumi. We must work hand in hand to build a better Malaysia. What will happen if we run out of our natural resources e.g. petroleum, gas, logging? where will we stand by then? I see a lot of "white elephants" projects across Malaysia, millions & billions are spent/wasted. Do the rakyat really benef

As pointed out by Lai Kee Yong above, the Pendrive is simply a brand name for the USB flash drive. It is certainly not a Taiwan or Malaysian invention. The Singapore listed company Trek2000 already started selling its "Thumb Drive" in the year 2000 and it holds the patent in many countries. Mr Pua only launched his product a year later than Trek (the old name of Trek2000).
I'll stand corrected if anyone can point to reliable technical sources (e.g. patent numbers, etc) supporting the claim that Mr Pua is the inventor.

I would be very interested in the sources of your story about Mr Pua inventing the pendrive/USB flash drive "without brand" and supplying his product to other branded companies. What I do know is that his company has been selling the drive under the "Pendrive" brand since the year 2001.

Because I am a malay, though supporting PR - this piece is indeed a hurtful one. I do not want anybody to degrade my success anymore! Though my wife is a medical doctor and has a Phd from one of the top universities in the world, non Malays would still be thinking that she is stupid because she got a JPA scholarship to pursue for a world class recognition. I've told her to work hard to get a noble price one day.... just to prove that what people say about us are wrong, but still the skeptics like James will still be thinking the same - just because UMNO are still in power!
Stop voting for UMNO, because they are so racist and has made Chinese and other non-malays think that Malays are incompetent.

Until the government instill a sense of pride and belonging and have policies that are inclusive, I just can't see how this nation can move forward as a whole. The unfortunate thing about this is that we already have a younger generation that are indoctrinated with this BN racist ideology and it is going to take a lot of undoing to overcome this.
Just any Malaysian that have wondered out of the country, you'll realize that they felt so much freer and wanted eventhough they look totally different. Most will tell you that they miss the food but it is not an issue anymore since there are now enough good Malaysian foods in many parts of the world.

dont be disheartened. i dont think non-malays are seeing malay as inferior. i see this article more of a direct attack on the system rather than any race. syabas to your wife, she deserves it. in fact many non malays adorn capable malays like anwar, tok guru, nizar, zaid etc. i do not want to stress more because we should be seeing ourselves as malaysians. it's just pity that many more capable malaysians has gone abroad instead of contributing to the country because they were not given any chance when they were struggling on their own at the budding stage. chin up alright

The fact is - 2008's March tsunami would never happened if the government had not sent many Malays to study abroad and at local IPTAs, and thanks to them (BN) - now, many educated young Malays have opened their eyes and go against them. This has proven that only education to the highest level could eradicate racism in our country.
Hopefully, more younger generations will return home and vote for PR come next GE. Ameen.

Moreover, the educational focus is on learning 'facts', not asking questions. That's why technical topics are satisfying for UMNO.

How can you call a person an inventor of a device when such a device was already commercially available? It appears that Mr Pua and his company did their own R&D work but this does not qualify him to be the inventor of the device.
Don't be too quick to insult people by saying that "please dont just copy & paste from wikipedia". I have been following the development of flash drive products from Trek2000 (and other companies) since I first saw Thumb Drives on store shelves in 2000 or 2001. For your information, Wikipedia was only beginning to be setup in 2001.
In fact, I have two 250MB (biggest available capacity at the time when they were purchased many years ago) Pendrives from Mr Pua's company. They are in fact much bulkier than flash drives from others.
written by ZZC, July 24, 2009
You cannot win an argument by insulting others. I was trying to put the record straight. I do not know Mr Pua personally and I have nothing against him. As I said in an earlier comment, I am impressed by his achievements. However, in the absence of evidence to the contrary (like patent filings, etc), it is clear that he cannot be claimed to be the inventor of the device when others have already marketed the device well before him.
For your information, I have an intense dislike for UMNO and BN. I am a technical person and would strive to be technically correct in issues that are verifiable.
Present your facts to back up your arguments. Be a man. Don't be such a lowlife who spouts nonsense.

I aspired to have a PHD myself but needless to say, no financial means to do it when I was young. 30 years down the road, although I have the means (and of course the brain) to do it, I wonder if I should!
'PhD' has changed! In Malaysia, people with PhD seems to be everywhere and it has become a fashion. So many people with PhD that I met do not seem to be very intelligent, unlike my undergraduate days.
All the same, Malaysia is the master of slogans and the best at 'manufacturing' qualifications that means nothing. Who cares about substance, just the form will do! After all, there is not much research you can do in this country anyway! Sad!!

i respect your opinion. i really did not mean to offend you. i was just a bit 'heated up' after contemplating the points put across in this article. i guess we are just seeing things from different perspectives. for instance if we look back to camera invention, there were so many stages of evolution. if we compare the invention of old film camera & digital camera, the improvement is leap and bound and thus i would consider digital camera a new invention using the same concept of image capturing. did the digital camera inventor deserve to be called an inventor? yes i think he did. any how if we forego technicalities & focus on the main topic, the system of this country stink like najis dont you agree?

There are many educated young malays who have the same spirit like my wife and I. We asked for government scholarship because we believed that we deserved it. So are many non-malays too. But I believe in fair competition spirit which enables people like my wife to produce extraordinary results. Nobel Prize is not a far reaching target for anybody who are willing to work hard and disregard negative people that surround them. Winning the Noble Prize should be a dream for every scientist in our country, a Malaysian scientist - wherever they are.
I am proud of Malaysian who are still working so hard, though facing difficulties in getting assistance or funding from the government - but, alas, not so many people know there are some poor talented malays who're not getting any assistance from the "gomen" because of the difference in their political stands.
Next GE, vote for PR. Enough is enough....
written by sizzlestick, July 25, 2009
Come on Enche Abdullah if you are smart and educated as your wife is, you should know better: your doctor-wife getting "a noble price one day" is NOT for the purpose of "to prove that what people say about us are wrong". I like your use of lower-cased letters for the Noble Prize and "price" for 'Prize'. I hope your conscience based on your education stopped you from degrading and mocking the ideals of the Noble Committees with your nonsensical "a noble price".
Furthermore, no organisation UMNO or otherwise can make "non Malays would still be thinking that she is stupid because she got a JPA scholarship to pursue for a world class recognition". Academic eminence can only be gotten by sheer hard work and 'personal smarts'. It is a pity that Abdullah's acquaintances "Chinese and other non-malays " of Malaysia looked down on his wife's achievement. This got be racism at its worse.
For "conspiracy theorist" and "Gumball", you are wasting your time and sympatheties on Abdullah's comedic attempt.
Oops, I almost fell into for the 'wayang' played by these 3 persons: "Abdullah, conspiracy theorist and Gumball. Poor show! boys.

James Chin, a very good article articulated. I am proudly said that I am one of the examples of the so called "victim". Pass with flying color in STPM, so lucky to get into local University with the unlucky one on the course the government “chooses" for me? Wait a minutes, am i saying the government choose for me? Yes, of my application to enroll into the University and field i want, 8 out of my 8 choices weren't my choice, and i was given the 9th choices which was not in my list of application, to study in local university with none of my choice, to either take it or leave it. So what happen? I took it, and i continue my study on that field for 3 years. Now working in private, a prestige job i would presume, however none of my skill were applied, none of my knowledge were applied, so then what applies? My skill of adaptation, my skill of learn, unlearn and relearn that keeps me survive in Malaysia. Is a sad fact but true.
however I do not discriminate Malay as whole nor do i say you discriminate, because my some of my family members and friends (only few) are Malays too, I’m Chinese, and you are speaking the truth here,i just not please and not welcome to those of the propagandist that behind all this. Our education seems to be a programming, to programs our young one to obedient, to act as everything as program, systematize, and critical thinking and new idea are not welcome.
As so to say that you mention this statement:
"In the arts, local productions cannot reflect reality. How else can you explain government directives that Mat Rempits and transvestites cannot be shown on Malaysian movies and television. Yes, I am focusing on this issue, as I am one of the minority of the minorities one. What a double suffered for me! Yes, as you mention that homosexual, transvestites are so called forbidden word to use/ show/ mention as though they would not have exist in our country. I would say there is nothing wrong with homosexual people, the problem the propagandist. That when someone mentions the word "GAY", most of the people mind is...
Yucks..., I hate Gay!!unholiness, unnatural, they should go to hell, and not even born in this world Gay's a threat!. i am a Malaysian why should i give a damn care about them, I have my dreams and direction to go on. They shouldn't even be here, an ugly menace to nation.
Those were the hateful statements most of us (including me) have for fagots, not until I found out that I am one of them too. All my hope and dreams become stagnant, no way to go, because of this so-called 'Gay-is-evil' inside me becomes a fear to me. So for all these while I hate to myself? Am I threat to my country?
What are gay people? Gay people are naturally born with, Gay people are the person that attracted of the same sex, same sexual orientation, full stop and that’s it. Gay people do not hit right on you and touch your ball. Gay people are not all about sex. Gay people are just like you and me, normal person. However I don't see gay people in my country have any equals rights? Recognition? Or equal treatment?
Ok I’m done enough of 'talk' here, to conclude, gay people are like any normal people, they are nothing wrong with them.
However for gay who indulges in selling-sex, drugs, they (not only gays but also straight, lesbian, transgenders that involve in these menaces) should be the one to be punished, grounded and healed in our society.
So if you are asking me what I want/to do for my country?
First, EQUALITY in all people in Malaysia, so that we could proudly promote 1 Malaysia as whole, as unity regardless of races and religions.
Last but not least, of course of the minorities one would say, love the people in regardless of their sexual orientation, love unconditionally, nurture our children, growth them up in a healthy (straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgenders) lifestyles, especially for those innocent adolescent who just came out to their parents that they are gay. Love them, and do not hate, disown them or force them to change, because there is nothing wrong with them. forcing them, is like asking them to ground/hide their feeling, to pretend to be straight and live in a lies in a sense to be accepted in our society, it is a disastrous to live in lies/ pretend and we need to be education on sexual orientation. it would be better that we have a organization for parents and friends of gays, lesbian, bisexual and transgender to help each other in leading a family with these people. Because, these people (not only them, but their families too) are the people of our future
That needs you!
You!
You!
And you! To make a different, to give them HOPE as towards to our nation growth as to our country hope!
Ground them or nurture them? You decide.
Sorry man, i keep mention homosexual as though the word is evil or doom, i believe, if all men and women are treated equally, there will be hope in our nation. And less teen suicidal for the minorities one.
Give me a respond to here ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) i am openly accept any comment even the hateful one or any question to ask, to share any topics.

You are nothing but a moronic racist. In fact you are a coconut or a WOG (yellow outside, white inside for preferring English instead of the national language). Do you think the Koreans and the Japanese do their scientific research and invent things by using English?
written by Gumball, July 29, 2009
take the hate from yourself for a moment and truly consider; have Malaysians been researching science and inventing things with the same success as the Japanese and Koreans?
and personally, how far has English helped you in your abilities in life?
Honestly, i can understand the need for pride in using the national language throughout the country, but for the sake of growth, not pride, is where this debate lies.
calling James a coconut for the preference of English and racist in the same context is much like saying 'excellent but racist and biased' at the same time. its pretty mixed up..

I think you miss the point of the article. It sounds like you believe Bahasa Malaysia is at the same level as English, Japanese and Korean. i'm (coincidentally) fluent in all four.. did you know BM has no past tense? It isn't about racism. you don't use a hammer to screw in a screw. our 'national' language is simply insufficient; we look towards english to describe complex ideas (and sometimes 'make the word our own'... spelling it malay-style.. e.g. 'bisnes').
To illustrate, i simply ask that you attempt to get through your business day without speaking an english word.
