APRIL 27 – It never ceases to amaze me how simple and trusting we Malaysians are.
We have heard all these promises before. Pak Lah, the Mr Clean and Mr Nice Guy of Malaysian politics proclaimed his great mission of fighting corruption after 22 years of unprincipled and largely unaccountable governance under Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
We lapped it all up, initially at any rate, and believed every word the spin doctors spewed out about Abdullah Badawi.
It was not too difficult a job for Abdullah Badawi, or anyone else for that matter, after Mahathir, to look ethically spotless, clean and pure as the driven snow.
Badawi, with his religious credentials, gave every appearance of being the reformer that this country had been praying for. Alas, his leadership proved a total let-down for Malaysia.
What began as a journey full of hope and promise turned very quickly into a national nightmare. Abdullah, who skippered the good ship MALAYSIA, was in truth an incompetent and inept rating playing at being Admiral of the Fleet.
We discovered soon enough that he could not tell north from south and a sexton from a pair of compasses. We had to put up with his erratic command, watching with increasing anxiety as he set the ship adrift aimlessly, with no prospect of ever making landfall.
Now let me move away from naval to boxing metaphors, and I hope I am not mixing them in the process.
Abdullah had come to lead us laden with his own strange stock-in-trade. It was a mix, in no particular order, of Islam Hadhari that he himself could not explain to save his life, the memorably inane “Work with me and not for me” catchphrase, and the almost absurdly messianic anti-corruption clarion call that he had used to fool the entire nation.
I am embarrassed to admit, on reflection, that he had me fooled from Day One.
Abdullah was persuaded by close family members and advisers that he was doing a brilliant job, and this was what he wanted to hear.
He believed that he had what was needed to punch above his weight. He did not realise until too late that the Islam Hadhari as he had postulated it was no match for the reality of Umno politics with its long-established culture of money politics (for which, read grand corruption), in-fighting and back-stabbing.
Soon enough, he found himself out-pointed at every turn by his own seconds, Najib and Muhyiddin, whose protestations of eternal love and loyalty made with a straight face before the disastrous March 2008 elections seemed the height of black humour.
They pushed all the responsibility for the electoral failure to him, and with indecent haste, distanced themselves from him. They turned collective responsibility on its head. This was their interpretation.
And now, they are now leading Malaysia.
I am recalling the Abdullah years as a way of reminding ourselves not to be tempted into swallowing the “right noises” that Najib is making, hook, line and sinker.
He is apparently good at developing popular policies on the trot, and all his reform promises seem to flow so effortlessly and glibly off his silvery tongue and that worries many people who are looking more for substance rather than form.
His 1 Malaysia is a case in point. How does Najib propose to give practical effect to his excellent concept given the reality of Malaysia’s race-biased policies of racial discrimination?
Does he not see a contradiction? Is he clear in his own mind what he is talking about? For now, it remains a slogan and, without a clear vision of what 1 Malaysia is intended to be, it could well turn out to be nothing more than a grand illusion.
Does he really believe that he has what it takes to reconcile Umno’s pathological obsession with bumiputra rights on the one hand with the principles of inalienable equality for ALL Malaysians on the other?
1 Malaysia without complete equality of opportunity is nothing if not a cruel and dishonest practical joke.
So, until Najib sets out his plan for 1 Malaysia that accords with the conditions for a truly “Malaysian Malaysia” (with apologies to Lee Kuan Yew), I suggest, in a manner of speaking, we do not put the champagne on ice as it could be premature.

It is so blatantly obvious that those who ran the UMNO government has no perception what GLOBALIZATION REALLY MEANS. I recommend Thomas Friedmann's booh TITLED "The World is Flat". It is an excellent read. The world has changed to such extend that closed economies will be left behind to languish in the waste basket of history; Malaysia will even lag behind Africa, as they develop and we stagnate.
Malaysia is hit be 2 whammies, that of ignorance of a changing world and what has to be done to stay abrest and on the internal side of social engineering, we are split into even smaller components of race. We are split twice, once from the world of competitive economics and a second time within ourselves into our component communities sacrificing EXCELLENCE FOR AN INSIGNIFANT CALL FOR THE DOMINANCE OF ONE RACE OVER THE OTHERS. How will making one superior race benefit the whole Nation in a competitive world and yet deliver EXPANDING THE NATIONAL CAKE BIGGER ?
WHAT WILL BE THE POLICY FOR MALAYSIA IF ALL MALAYSIA HAS ONLY ONE RACE, the MALAYS; and there are no Indians nor Chinese ? CONSIDER THIS PROPOSITION ! And the answer will show that what has been touted as the NEP is just FOOLISHNESS ! and a mistake !

The 1-Malaysia theme is nothing but a farce and a sick attempt to recoup lost voters’ support before the next general election

The last few paragraphs underlined the crux of the current socio-political state of play in Malaysia :
"Does he (Mr Najib) not see a contradiction? Is he clear in his own mind what he is talking about? For now, it remains a slogan and, without a clear vision of what 1 Malaysia is intended to be, it could well turn out to be nothing more than a grand illusion.
Does he (Mr Najib) really believe that he has what it takes to reconcile Umno’s pathological obsession with bumiputra rights on the one hand with the principles of inalienable equality for ALL Malaysians on the other?
1 Malaysia without complete equality of opportunity is nothing if not a cruel and dishonest practical joke".
With feedback like this, and giving the benefit of the doubt, let's hope Mr Najib can put some 'flesh to the bone". It is perhaps with optimism that I hope the removal of the 30% investors equity to "bumiputras" represents genuinely, the first step to normalisation of the Malaysian society and bring us in sync with the rest of the world.
I believe as Raja "Pete" Kamaruddin so well put it, that Malays are inherently modest and fine people which I note is best exemplified by the people of Kelantan. It is just that they have been misled in the last few decades by a ne'er -well-to=do not-quite-Malay leader. It is not in their nature to be boorish, arrogant and vile. I hope he has woken up to the fact that he is in a leadership position and that his job is to lead and UMNO will surely follow. He sets the stage for new policies that will bring equality - to the best that reality allows us - to all.
The only bugbear here is Mr Mahathir and his ideas. Will Mr Najib prove to be is own man or is he afraid of Mr Mahathir? Will he make policies in line with the changing times and generation or will he stick to "Mahathirsm"?
How he answers these questions will determine how well he can make UMNO relevant or irrelevant. But one fact is definite : "Mahathirsm" is irrelevant.

Najib has started a joke,
and left all crying.
But it was a cruel joke,
and left us all pining in pain.
1Malaysia. Even Rais is not sure what is that all about.
Umno is confused. No one can articulate in precise terms.
Utusan Malaysia got worried. They told the Chinese don't ask too much.
1Malaysia is Najib's website.
Nice slogan, appealing tone.
The bubble is burst today...
Tunku Aziz woke us up...
As in figure of speech,
Don't put the champagne on ice yet.

Did he do well in acedemics in his youth? Masters, 1st class honours ,top of class? Answer is "NO"! . Did he performed outstandingly in Petronas , his one and only one career outside politics? Answer is "NO"!. Did he achieve anything memorable as MB of Pahang? Answer again is "NO"!. Did he ever formulates any brilliant policies during his many donkey years as Deputy Minister and Minister of sereval portfolios? Again "NO"!. Have you ever hear him giving an inspirational speech to Malaysians? "NO". Did he ever authored any notable books like Mr.O of US? "NO"!.
We have being given an "DUD" as PM. NR depended on his father's name and legacy to rise up in UMNO politics. He is not his own man. Dr.M can ever squeeze his b*lls and make him appoint his son as deputy minister. "1Malaysia"?? he can't ever explain properly what it means. Malaysians have to endure another 4 years of this guy and UNMO rule.
The good news is that a lot of Malaysians had woke up from their slumber. They are not so easily conned. There is hope for PR in 2013 !.

I don't think the people think that DS Najib Tun Razak is Mr. Clean at all.
However, I do agree that in terms of purpose and objectives, the 1Malaysia idea is still without proper structure and a bloody lagging website. And while giving exception to the 30 percent Bumiputera clause in certain areas of industry may generate more foreign domestic investments, it does not guarantee it.
And while the government has passed a law stating that religious conversion will not affect a child until puberty, it does nothing to guarantee the wrongdoings and the enforcement of the law, as we can clearly see in this case of Indira Gandhi still waiting to get her child back from her abusive, convert of a husband.
While DS Najib is talking of change, he has yet to ensure that such changes is drilled down and taken into affect by the nation. Therein lies his challenge.

In fact when the PM was the Education Ministers, the teachers were very much confused by his slogans and new policies with changes without follow up and follow through.
Both of them lack charisma and intelligent to bring the country forward. Worst still, they have to work through the corrupt and patronage system of UMNO.
Any senior DAP, PKR or PAS leader would make a lot of difference in running the country better because of the lack of baggages.
You are right on the dot not to put any champaigne on ice.

The actual quote is:
“As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it - whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, he is trash.”
Who is Harper Lee? (for the younger Malaysians who may not have been told to read this author's work)
Author of TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD. (The book deals with racism in USA in the early 1900s. Racism was not only rife but sickeningly endorsed by the local governments particularly in the southern states. It was highly recommended reading in Malaysian secondary schools until the late 1970s after which nothing much was mentioned about it in the academic circles.)

one glimpse of the many ministers in the various sectors of governance and none stand out. if you're talking about mistrust, indifference, selfishness and antipahty, many can lay claim. its like a repetitious diorama made for the amusement of the public, serving no real purpose other than to provide a face to answer grievances and offer empty solutions.
this is the price we pay for negligence. ignorance may be bliss, but in retrospect, bliss doesnt last very long.

Unfortunately, the steps so far are small and insignificant to the real economy except to give KLSE a brief boost.
The economy needs the people to spend but UMNO and its cronies taxes the people in all imaginable forms, direct tax, indirect tax, APs and other bumi privileges, licenses, over sized administration, crony monopolies and corruption.
I am afraid it serves the government officials and their cronies more than the country's economy.

The MACC can easily check out the corrupt and 'got rich quick' by matching their accumulated wealth against their declared income they report to the IRB. just drive around to those areas where you see massive big houses (palaces) and fleets of expensive cars and one will so easily know whether the occupant got rich through connections or hardwork..If you own a RM15million house, your accumulated income would have been pretty substantial and the tax paid would be really substantial too..
i still see alot of the top UMNO connected guys living beyond your total income in their lifetime and is the PM too blind to this or he is still condoning this..I suppose it will have to be known in the next general election. the people are no longer accepting blatent corruption by those in Power.. I hope Najib realise this before it is too late.

That's my Cruel Joke?
written by Aries, April 27, 2009
It has been debated and deliberated, analysed (or rather 'anal'-lysed) inside-out and outside-in, upside-down and downside-up; interpreted rightly or wrongly; given a religious flavour; politically, socially and economically considered; talked about until the cows come home, ad nauseum!
The whole issue is stale and sometimes objectionable. Not because people are not interested in equality and fairness, accountability and integrity, transparency and good governance, etc., etc.
It is stale because the sentiments, conclusions, opinions, ideas, preferences, direction, flavours and colours are always one-sided and abhorrently prejudiced and jaundiced.
How could one begin to talk sense when conditions are always set and fixed by interest parties and individuals and being dominated and monopolised?
How could a sensible debate and discussion could be effected when one party's voice drowned the others', even before the debate begun?
How could salient points be raised when one party thinks that his views are the gospel truths and unassailable and not to be challenged nor doubted?
You can go on and on...
What can others do when everything else is drowned and decimated by "ketuanan", " special privileges", "special quotas", "selective prejudice and discrimination", "religious supremacy" ( read holier than thou attitude), "UMNO-centrism", "cronyism", "corruption", etc., etc.
It makes no sense to even think about the issues. Let alone talk and discuss about them.
The stench of death (of the issues) gets stronger by the years, so much so that it is causing the people to feel nauseated, crazy, repulsed, even to the point of hatred.
Normally death would evince compassion and sympathy, sorrow and remorse, etc. etc.
What and how would one feel when the death is of freedom, righteousness, fundamental rights and liberties, spirit of the constitution, electoral rights, etc. etc.?
Wouldn't all these make 1Malaysia and whatever that resembles it to be a cruel joke?
Let not our intelligence be mocked and insulted.
Certainly we Malaysians deserve better. Certainly we Malaysians know better. Certainly we Malaysians can discern and appreciate the finer things in life. Certainly we Malaysians have come far enough to know what to expect of the government.

There is no such thing as TRUE equality, everybody getting the same piece of the cake, its all an ideal that is nigh impossible to reach, as long as humans have wordly desires.
Also here's another thing to ponder:
Malay population = 60%
Chinese population = 30%
Indian population = 10%
So the "economic cake" should be divided into:
Malay piece of the cake = 60%
Chinese piece of the cake = 30%
Indian piece of the cake = 10%
Is that not so? Logically thinking anyway... But in reality the Malay piece of the cake is about 30%, the rest is all non-Malays.

Sadly, Kee or Tariq. You missed the point. Equality that has been spoken about with passion here really means equal opportunity and equal rights. It is not about which race but which Malaysian.
The only way you are to ensure a even split by race is by discrimination, abuse of power and corruption.
Hopefully, you will move beyond a race biased mentality one day and become a Malaysian.

Did he get it from 1 Utama? The business establishment is doing roaring business if you count the number of vehicles parked in the car parks; and those drivers going round and round and round for parking space over thereOr did he get the ideas from Mr. Lee Kuan Yew in the 1960s when "Malaysian Malaysia " was the clarion call of PAP in Malaysia? Of course taking a leaf from the foresighted Mr. Lee's slogan would not go down well with UMNO members!
Now he has opened the doors for local and foeriegn entrepreneurs to do business here. No 30% equity in several sectors! That is a fresh breeze of air! That is the way forward for this nation , IF it wants to compete with the world. If you do not want to compete, that is your business: the world is moving on! Just jump onto the bandwagon or you will be left behind!
Then, there is the INCLUSIVE, not EXclusive, policy! Yes, INCLUDE everybody in the EQUATION of OPEN competition! Afraid to compete? Then sorry! You can stagnate and die in the coconut-shell.
Yes. OPEN up the banking industry: let foreign banks come in! Open up the Universities; and let the BEST brains come in to helm the Universities. Then the Universities will be on theradar screen of recognition. You get noticed! Professors, lecturers and students will come in. Afraid to compete with them? Then you deserve to lag behind while the world moves on!
DARE to fight your place in the world! Fight your way into the Olympics! Fight your way into the FIFA World Cup! Fight your way into the Wimbledon tennis world! Fight your way into the Masters Golf Club tournament!
Do you DARE?
