It wasn’t me!

MAY 15 — I never like taking responsibility for mistakes I've made. It means admitting that I was wrong at something. And when I admit that I’m wrong, it means that I’m not perfect. I can’t stand not being perfect. The reason being, I am perfect.

So I guess I can relate to people who can’t seem to admit to their mistakes. Let’s say, for example, the mayor of Crumble Rock City wants to develop his town. He encourages the construction of buildings all around so that the city looks modern and sophisticated.

Construction begins and any Tom, Dick and Harry’s company can develop land everywhere. Approval by the city’s authorities is lax and given out like pennies on the sidewalk. Skyscrapers line the cityscape. Hills are filled with buildings and valleys are filled with houses.

One day, it rains. It rains so hard that mud starts sliding down the hillsides where the skyscrapers stand. It rains so hard that the skyscrapers and the hills start to crumble. Everything crumbles into the valley. People die and many lose their homes. An investigation is done and the findings show that the ground has become unstable due to overdevelopment.

The mayor comes out and makes a public statement saying that although the authorities approved all the construction work, they did not know that the effects would be as such. So, they bear no responsibility and no legal action can be taken against them.

The whole country is watching. If Crumble Rock City authorities were to admit that they made a mistake, it would be a big embarrassment. Nobody wants that and I can definitely identify with that. I wouldn’t want to be embarrassed. I remember once when I fell down in puddle of mud in public just as a bus drove by. Everybody's heads turned. I felt like crawling into a cave to hide my face. It was very embarrassing indeed.

Let’s take another example. Norzlan was caught by the religious authorities for being in close proximity with a girl who is not his wife. It became public and, obviously, his wife Addy found out. To make matters worse, Norzlan, Addy and the other girl are all actors. Their case becomes public.

Addy confronts Norzlan on a film set and reporters are all around them. She screams. He remains silent. She continues to scream and he continues to remain silent. Remember, reporters and their camera crew are all around documenting the situation. Then Norzlan speaks. He pleads to Addy stop making a scene because he has to think of the other girl and her family.

This just makes Addy scream louder. She yells that she has a family too. Norzlan keeps quiet for a while and then claims that he loves both Addy and the other girl. No admission of guilt and definitely no apology from him. We can’t blame Norzlan for this.

We can’t blame him because Norzlan is a man’s man. He can’t be seen to be weak in front of the media and the public. He needs to show that he is in control and knows exactly what he is doing. No woman can tell him what to do.

Yes folks. I can identify with Norzlan. I remember one day during my university years. I was in my housemate’s room watching a VCD (yup… it was that long ago). He had a small alarm clock on his table. Somehow, I accidentally kicked the table and the clock fell and broke. I panicked and left it there.

That evening, my housemate came home and noticed his broken clock. He asked what happened. I just kept quiet and pretended not to know anything. He doesn’t know who broke his clock till today.

So, the conclusion that I have come to is that we all make mistakes. But that doesn’t mean we’re not perfect. We will only cease being perfect when we admit to our mistakes and everyone finds out about it. Just keep mum, deny any wrongdoing, and everything will be okay.
