Tottenham and Chelsea raise stakes on naming rights

LONDON, Nov 7 — Tottenham Hotspur and London arch-rivals Chelsea put the issue of stadium naming rights on the agenda this week after both clubs revealed plans to tap the sponsorship market in their bid to compete.

"It's suddenly now two (Premier League) clubs in London looking for naming-rights partners and potential sponsors have got a choice. They've got two very different propositions," said Tottenham's executive director Paul Barber.

Toronto wins vote to host 2015 Pan American Games

GUADALAJARA (Mexico), Nov 7 — Toronto was awarded the 2015 Pan American Games yesterday by beating the South American capitals Bogota and Lima on the first ballot.

Toronto, which has twice failed in bids to land the Summer Olympics, has budgeted US$2.4 billion (RM8.4 billion) for the Games that will be spread out across 16 other southern Ontario municipalities.

"I'm sure it was a very difficult decision for voters," Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said.

ARCADIA (California), Nov 7 — Irish-based Man of Iron wore down nine-year-old gelding Cloudy's Knight in the stretch to capture the US$500,000 (RM1.75 million) Breeders' Cup Marathon by a nose at Santa Anita Park yesterday.

Ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O'Brien, the Kentucky-bred chestnut won for the fourth time in 10 career starts, the first outside Ireland.

CAS suspend Chelsea’s ban on signing players

LONDON, Nov 6 — Chelsea were cleared to sign new players in the January transfer window today after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended a ban imposed by world body FIFA.

The English Premier League leaders had asked for a stay until the result of an appeal was decided.

The court said in a statement that they had granted the request, with the sanctions suspended “until the CAS renders its final decision in this matter.” No date was given for the decision.
