Kelantan chief sorry for fan trouble in cup final

SINGAPORE, Nov 9 — The president of Malaysian Cup finalists Kelantan apologised for the poor behaviour of the club’s supporters, who set fire to flags, banners and chairs following their defeat to rivals Negeri Sembilan on Saturday.

“I must admit these incidents should not have happened and I apologise for their behaviour,” Kelantan FA president Tan Sri Annuar Musa told The Star newspaper on today.

“Our fans had high expectations on us winning the cup, and when the team did not perform in the final they became restless,” he said.

Despite the apology, Kelantan are expected to be punished for the incidents in the 3-1 defeat at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

“(FAM) President Sultan Ahmad Shah wants action to be taken to put a stop to this violent behaviour by fans,” general secretary Azzuddin Ahmed said to the Star.

The North-eastern club have had problems with supporter behaviour previously.

They were banned from playing home matches at their Kota Baru stadium in April after repeat disturbances during Negeri Sembilan games, including one where the visitors were trapped in their dressing room for two hours as fans ran amok. — Reuters
