Weather crushes Olympics cranberries logo

VANCOUVER, Feb 9 – Unseasonably warm weather at the site of the Vancouver Winter Games claimed its first victim on Monday – floating Olympic cranberries.

Snow melting in the mountains to the dismay of Games organisers has also increased river levels, and scuttled plans for a Canadian Olympic logo made from some 13 million tiny cranberries.

Cranberry farmers hastily re-located their 3,200 square metre display to land, and the president of the Canadian Olympic Committee dismissed suggestions this was a signal of more trouble to come.

“The fact that they were able to adapt in this particular circumstance and still have the event even though the river is high, shows how ready they are will all their plan B’s,” said Michael Chambers.

Vancouver organisers have been trucking and helicoptering snow to the hardest-hit venue, Cypress Mountain, which is the site of snowboard and freestyle skiing events.
