Crew, passengers on crashed Merpati flight all dead

JAKARTA, Aug 5 — All 12 passengers and three crew members of the Merpati Nusantara Airlines’ Twin Otter aircraft which crashed in Amisibil, Papua last Sunday, are confirmed dead.

The airline’s managing director, Bambang Bhakti, said information on the fate of the passengers and crew were gathered by the search and rescue team, as well as Amisibil residents who managed to enter the crash site by walking through the mountainous area.

He said the team flew in a helicopter to the site but could not land. As a result, the team members had to walk and are expected to reach the site by midnight.

On Sunday morning, the plane disappeared for several hours after taking off from Sentani airport to head for Oksibil in the Bintang mountainous district.
